Weekend GTKY: What will the Grandparents be called?

Re: Weekend GTKY: What will the Grandparents be called?

  • My mom "grannie" My step-dad is poppy "d"   my dad is papa. Step-mom grandma suzie.
MIL is grandma  step-FIL is grandpa. And FIL grandpa.
  • Loading the player...
  • When I was little, I had 3 sets of grandparents on my dad's side of the family, 1set of grandparents and 2 sets of great-grandparents. We called one of my sets of great-grandparents Another Grandma and Another Grandpa. Lol. My brother came up with it when he was little (first grandchild and great grandchild), and it just stuck.
  • In our family:
My parents = Grandpa and Nan
MIL = Grandma "First Name Here"
FIL = Dzia Dzia (Polish for grandpa)
Step MIL - currently we're just having DD call her by her first name.  Originally she asked to be called Abuelita  (she is part Mexican), then changed her mind to her first name.  Then one day she referred to herself as Grandma and DH was like, "yeah, no, she's not calling you that." Personally, while I get where DH is coming from and fully support him on that (his family's dynamics are complicated), I feel kind of rude just having DD call her by her first name.  But, they're not my family, so I'm following DH's lead on that one.
How are you pronouncing dzia dzia? I've called my grandfather dziadek (we pronounced it similar to djadge) for years but I know there's regional differences in pronunciation.
I think the easiest way to spell the pronunciation is "juh juh"!

  • My parents will be granny & granda + their first names. I have a 2yo nephew so this is already established. The same goes for my grandparents (my baby will be great grandchild 26 on one side & 30 something on the other)

When i asked my MIL would she like to be called granny, nannie or any other suggestions (first grandchild on dh side of the family) she declared she was "too young" to be called any of those! Bearing in mind the woman is nearly 60 years of age & is older than my mum! Some serious eye rolling was done!

My mom goes by grandma with her other grandchild so I'm sure that will stick.

My my special snowflake MIL goes by "Eenaw First Name" and it makes me cringe.  None of her grandkids even call her that (though she swears that's how the oldest one pronounced grandma as a baby... No one else heard it). It's one of those things I shouldn't care about, but it makes me irrationally angry.

  • My mom is grandma but both my kids started by calling her "ma-ma" and I'm mommy so I always knew the difference. My toddler tries to say grandma and says "gwah-ma" lol... At least she tries! My step dad is "Pah" . My dad is "pop-pop" or pa-pa. DHs parents are Abuela (Wela) and Abuelo (Welo)

  • My parents-MiMi and Pop Pop (both chosen by my son when he first started talking which I think is adorable and special)
Inlaws-Grammy and Poppy which they called themselves and demanded my DS call them that...
  • My mom is Mamaw
My dad is Grandpa "his name"
My stepmom is Grandma "her name"
    MIL is Mimi
    StepFIL is Pops
StepMIL is Nai-Nai (she is from Taiwan and that is Chinese for grandma)
FIL before he passed was Papa

It was always neat that they have a different name for all of them.

  • My grandmother will be Grandma Jo... just like I call her. I think H's grandparents will remain Grandma and Poc.
MIL/FIL/SMIL/DFIL will all likely just be Grandma and Grandpa first name.

My mom is TBD. It frustrates me because she knows what she wants (Mimi) but doesn't feel she can have it. She had a Mimi that she loved and feels it would be taking it away - but Mini is gone and my kids will never know her (she really was a great woman.) I think it's honoring for my mom to choose Mimi, she thinks it's stealing. Ugh. She thought about Mema but found out one of my aunts is that already. So we think some more
  • My parents are nana and grandpa and my in laws are papa and grandma.

  • My son was not the first grandchild on either side of our family so we have gone with what was already in place. The problem is that both sets are grandma and grandpa. Most of the time it's not too tough but as my son gets older it's a little tougher to differentiate. We have toyed with adding first names to each at least when we talk about them to help him start to understand the difference. There is one great grandparent still living between the two of us and she also has always been grandma to me. We called her Grandma Lou but none of my cousins called her that so it was always strange to me that we called her something different. With my nieces and nephews we have tried to be sure to say Great Grandma to help but that's a mouth full.

  • So my great-grandmother passed away last year, everyone called her 'Mimi.' Which is French fro grandma. I always wanted my mom to be the next Mimi, but I'm not sure how other family will take it, since my Mimi only just passed recently?

And my dad will be Grandad/Grandaddy.

My ILs will just be Grandma and Grandpa, our nephews call them that already.

    @Mylitta

So I just commented this above. I'm in the same boat, I want my Mom to be the next 'Mimi,' but our Mimi (my great-grandmother) just passed last year.

@karaelaine1991 my mother's side is 100% Polish and when I asked my mom if she wanted to be called Busia (boo-shuh), she said "over my dead body". LOL I love Dzia Dzia (djah djah) and that's what I called my grandpa on my mom's side. I wish that my dad would consider it but he won't.

Right now, my mom is really pushing for Mimi. None of the other grandparents-to-be have said a thing about it, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If it were up to me, I'd let the LO name them all. DH and I are all about silly nicknames anyway.

ETA: pronunciations, because we're not all Polish ;)

  • @HJ.Morgan Yes! Slightly different here because Mimi was my great great grandma and she passed when I was ~10ish. My mom's family might care, but she's the oldest, and I don't give a frick. The only ones who would get uptight about it already have grand kids, so they have their names.
  • Mom: Gigi
    Dad: Papa
    MIL: Mimi
FIL: Pap-Pap (I hate this name but my husband says that's what he and his brothers used to call their grandad lol)

  • Daddy (husband), granny, pappy (they are southern)
mama (me), Gigi, papa (they are northern)

    grandma & grandma

  • FIL has proudly announced he shall be "Pop"

Both moms want to be grandma. So, MIL is Grandma *First Name* and mine will be Grandma *Her Maiden Name* (she's been married and divorced twice and is currently single, so using either my maiden name or her current name feels wrong. Which is fine, because my Grandma *Mom's Maiden Name* was awesome and my kids ought to have one of those!). If that doesn't take with the kids, I may teach them and myself to pronounce it the English way my mom does (she's British and still have her Northern accent :D )

My dad hasn't been in my life since I was 15, but I've reestablished some contact with him since I don't want him not knowing he's a grandpa. I'll refer to him as Grandpa or Grandpa *Last Name*.  We may travel after Baby comes so he can meet his grandchild, but I'm not 100% sure it's the wisest choice yet.

Children are like casseroles; it takes a lot to mess them up.

  • My mother will be Mummi (a variation grandma in Finnish) and my dad will be Isoisa (which means simply grandfather in Finnish). I don't want my dad to have a cutesy name, as we are not very close.

My in-laws are Spanish, so mother-in-law will be Abuela and not sure what father-in-law will be, as I cannot tell the difference between the a and the o in the end (abuela vs abuelo). Maybe he will be ok with grandpa or abuelo+his name. Any suggestions or variations of Abuelo anyone knows of?
  • My parents-Nanny and Papa

FIL-Pawpaw *name* step MIL- grandma *name*

MIL- Grandma *name*  Step FIL Grandpa *name*

Pretty basic for us. Plus MIL/Step FIL live in Fl so they aren't seen a lot and my FIL/Step MIL live about 40 mins from us.
