Re: Stupid Questions Sunday 7/24

  • For moms on their third + baby.
1- if your bump got bigger quicker the second time, did it slow down and even out to about the same size as last time, or did it just keep going and going until you were nothing but bump?
2- we're thinking of moving newborn into toddlers room after like 6 or 7 months... thoughts on this? Terrible idea? Destined for failure? Or maybe it'll just work itself out?

  • @slartybartfast I don't think my bump got bigger quicker the second time compared to the first but it's definitely gotten bigger this time around then with the other two...I'm hoping it just evens itself out because by the end my belly was huge...can't imagine it being even bigger lol.
I have never had my youngest room with my oldest (until starting this September) so I don't have any first hand experience with a newborn and a toddler sharing a room but my two nephews share a room and have been since they brought the youngest home from the hospital and it seemed to work for them without any problems, so it's definitely doable. FYI, they are now 1 year and turning 3 in September (about 22 1/2 months apart).
  • @slartybartfast no experience with kids sharing rooms but it's such a fight to get my toddler asleep that I wouldn't consider putting a baby in there until said baby is sleeping through the night. I could not imagine trying to get both down in the middle of the night. If my toddler (26 months) does wake up now it takes at least an hour to get her back down. It's miserable!

  • My stupid question that I'm afraid to google: is it bad that I sprayed my yard for weeds? I used 3 gallons of roundup but was careful not to get it on my skin. I'm afraid Google will say I was stupid and irresponsible and caused irreparable damage to my unborn....but someone has to do it! DH was mowing the lawn.

  • My question is about carrying baby high vs low.. MIL says I'm caring baby high. My mom says I'm carrying low. Is there really a determining factor on high vs low and does it really matter anyway?

I agree that the 2nd time I didn't seems to get bigger faster, but this time I feel like I am 3 or 4 weeks ahead of where I was with my first 2.  I am going to even out since I am assuming that I am only bigger bc all my muscles al ready know what's going on. Haha

@sourlemon - let me know what you end up finding out about the round up. We need to address the weeds in our yard but I haven't because I'm lazy. Now I'm not doing it because ...hmm... maybe I shouldn't. Unfortunately and fortunately we live against open space. It's awesome but it means weeds take over and quickly. Pulling them is no option here. We tried year 1 and were laughed at by the thistle, bind weed, and 50 other weed varieties that act like us pulling them is just making more space for them to stretch out with their cousins.

@cayaylonglegs - I'm pretty positive carrying high v low has way more to do with your build and muscle distribution than anything else. I think it means nothing about baby. That's my 2 cents though I haven't researched it... it just seems like comparative abdomnial strengths, frame size, and things like that would have far more of an impact on how things morph than any baby-related thing.

  • Also, I'm at least 1 month ahead, size-wise, than I was last pregnancy. It's freaking me out because it's staying that way... Chill bump!

  • My bump got bigger earlier with my second but I was definitely smaller at the end. I didn't have any swelling with number two though like I did with the first so I think that had a lot to do with it.  This time I feel bigger at 19 weeks than both but I haven't dug out any photos to compare.
  • @slartybartfast I know there is natural week killers that use vinegar. I need to look it up and get on it in my yard, I have jst been lazy and nor wanting to look it up and actually do it. It is also way too hot to do that the past few weeks

I sprayed weed killer the other day. The works gotta get done, and we're not drinking it. I wore gloves, and found an old mask thing we had around. I felt silly wearing it, but did feel better about with it on.
  • My bump is also looking 4-5 weeks bigger this time than my first pregnancy. I'm not shocked as last time I had pretty rock hard abs and this time I started with mush. Not as much to hold it in!

  • @slartybartfast it's also impossible to keep up with pulling things here. The ground is rock hard and the only real time weeds come up is right after a big rain. Even spraying it's hard to keep up. Luckily we only get rain for about 3 months a year so it's not a year long struggle.

Yea I know this is my case too, I'm just a little pissed about it because I did get my ab strength way back up again... or so I'd thought. I thought I just had extra fat on top of it. Oh... maybe that's why it's bigger this time too... Whatever. I just hope it slows down.

  • You guys, can someone help me with figuring out my registry?  This is our first child.

I had heard to not register for lots of clothes, blankets, etc because people will buy them for you anyway.
BUT, the other day, MIL told me to put some clothes, blankets, etc. on my registry because I will want them.  However, she also offered to take us (me) shopping for the layette, which is apparently everything you initially need for the baby once it is born (onesies, blankets, towels, sheets, nursing supplies, etc).  So why would I put all these things on the registry?  It seems like, when we do this, we will probably be going to a local department store and NOT babies r us (where the registry is) so it's not like we can use a registry discount on these items.

Also, I'm not sure if we're going to do a shower or not.  DH is Jewish and it isn't part of their family's tradition to have one.  My mom is not really a hostess and probably won't offer to throw one.  Which basically means that if a friend offers, great, and if not, I will not have one.  So I'm not sure if anyone is going to be buying stuff off the registry anyway - other than me and DH.

I'm sure I'm overthinking this, but I am confused.
  • @penelope4612 - I would say leave clothes off. People love buying baby clothes and you'll get those for sure. If they aren't your style, I found that pretty much every store will take them back for store credit without a receipt. I'm also a relentless advocator for 2nd hand kids clothes. (reduce reuse recycle and all that).
These days, some people (aunts, people from your or your partner's work, etc) do search online and find out if you have a registry. I did that for my SIL - she didn't have a shower but I bought and sent her some stuff from her registry anyways. She never told me about it, I just googled their names and the words baby registry.

  • @penelope4612 I did an Amazon registry last time. When I looked at their suggestions they didn't have any clothes on it. Maybe 1-2 blankets, 2-3 towels, and lots of burp rags. I think it really depends on what you want, or think you will need.

  • I wouldn't put lots of clothes on there. People will buy (or give 2nd hand) whatever clothes they think are cute. Also, clothes will be changing from summer to winter so if you add stuff now, there's a good chance it won't be available when you buy stuff or ppl look.

If there is an outfit you just have to have, then add it but maybe buy it early.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • @penelope4612 I agree with PP leave clothes off. I had none on my registry and there were people who bought me nothing but piles of clothing.

I also agree with PP that bump is larger this time, but I think I still had muscle separation in the ab region so that could be why. Also like others said maybe the bump just knows what to do!
  • @penelope4612 Friends have already given us baby clothes and blankets as gifts even though our shower will be in October. For that stuff, people will buy whatever they think is cute even if you've registered for clothes and blankets. I did register for an Aden + Anaïs muslin blanket set because those are my favorites, but unless you have something specific that you like and want, I wouldn't worry about registering for it.
  • @slartybartfast I've always been a "big bump" kind of lady... So no advice there. I can tell you that this time, my 5th pregnancy, I am measuring a solid 2 weeks ahead. Which hasn't happened before! Room sharing, yes... I have lots of experience moving a baby into a toddler or older sibs room. Typically I choose to make the move once they are sleeping for a longer stretch at night. It's always gone pretty smoothly. But my toddlers are generally "good" sleepers. Also, just make sure that it's safe... There's no way a toddler can climb in the crib, or put things that are choking hazards in a crib, because they will. They like to "help the baby" or give them toys in the morning. We talk about that, with even little toddlers and tell them a it's not safe or they could hurt the baby, they learn, but also don't always understand of course. It's the one place I majorly baby proof. Block out blinds or curtains are a must!

Due December 27th with baby #7

  • @penelope4612 I wouldn't add that stuff to your registry for two reasons 1) people will give you plenty, and 2) chances are they won't be available come time for your shower. Things like clothes tend to have a short shelf life because retailers get new styles so frequently.

Im also bigger this time around although my weight gain in minimal and far less than what it was at this point last time. I ended up being pretty big last time and carried very low the entire time, which has resulted in quite a bit of lower belly fat/loose skin. I assume that fat is the reason I'm looking so big these days.
  • Ladies - I'm not usually the fear mongering type but PUT DOWN the Round Up.  If your inclined, you can do some research but it's been linked to some really awful stuff lately.  Now that's mostly due to runoff if I'm remembering right, but I would avoid it.  I don't let my H spray when my son is around now, and I'm in the 'kids will be kids' camp.

@slartybartfast DS has been a terrible sleeper so I can't imagine adding another layer of distractions.  It may work but only when the baby consistently sleeps through the night.  Otherwise, I feel it would be unfair to your toddler to be awoken regularly if that's not their sleep pattern.

  • @cayaylonglegs I think people speculate on this because before there were ultrasounds to determine sex this used to be 'an old wives tale' of what you were having.  I don't believe it has anything to do with physical fitness, muscle tone or otherwise.  I've had friends who are fitness freaks carry high one pregnancy and low enough it looked like baby was going to fall out the next.  Every pregnancy is different.

I thought I was  was carrying super high and felt pressure on my stomach and lungs.  Come to find out babies are laying on top of each other lengthwise instead of side by side and no wonder I'm feeling the pressure!  Babies will choose where they're most comfy and hang out there.  Last pregnancy DS liked to hang near my right hip.

I know it's Monday but I have a stupid question. I woke up this morning feeling terrible - sore throat, headache, feverish, light headed. Normally I would just wait it out and hopefully feel better but I'm not sure if pregnancy changes things? I know none of us are doctors but has anyone had a similar experience? Would i call my OB or just go to my regular doc? I don't want to blow anything out of proportion if it's no big deal.

Have you taken your temperature to see if you actually have a fever? That would be the definitive for me on whether or not to call (and I would call my OB- talk to a nurse to find out what the protocol for a fever is ).

I know sometimes I wake up feeling like I drank a bottle of vodka the night before and then got hit by a bus.... but after a while, it seems to clear out. I'd rest a bit and see how you feel- maybe eat something?

  • @kbduke - when in doubt I'd call the OBs office.  I agree with @Toller02 - they probably won't do much if you don't have a fever.  But better safe than sorry.  I wouldn't want to sit on it for days and then end up wishing I'd called.

My boobs comfortably rest on my bump, but from all the ultra sounds in the last week I know she is head down and putting pressure on my cervix. Babies are weird, especially when they are still inside.

@kbduke: I was sick (with fever, etc.) the week of memorial day.

A couple of things: 1) I talked to my regular doc, not my OB (but they work in the same clinic). 2) When I saw my OB a week after being sick she assured me that I could have had a very high fever with minimal impact on baby.

I'm not generally one for treating mild fevers, but I chose to keep an eye on my temp and if it crossed 100 (I tend to run a little cold so 100 is high for me), I took Tylenol to bring it down. I was sick longer than I usually am because I didn't ride it out, but I wanted to be careful.

    (Edit cause spelling is hard)
Edit 2: I waited a couple days to call my doctor and just stayed home and rested the first day or 2.

Thanks everyone! I just called the nurse line at my OB's office. They were super helpful and said I should be ok without coming in but to call back if my symptoms get worse.
  • @kbduke I feel ya. I picked up a cold this weekend and feel like utter crap right now. I don't want to take anything, so I'm just suffering it out. Blah.

  • Child care thread made me think to ask this...

FI and I both work full time from home. I'm planning on taking about 4 weeks totally off. Then we don't really plan on doing anything for childcare until baby is mobile. Am I crazy to think that between the two of us we can tag team and still get enough work done? We have local family to pick up a few hours here and there as needed.

Once we have a mobile baby on the lose, I think I'm going to find someone to come in at least a few hours a day. More to entertain than really nanny, since we'll still both be home.

Am I living in fairytale land?
  • @tinattt23 - not necessarily, it depends on how many total hours you need and how intense your work is. If your work can be done without big blocks of time, I think it's doable. Newborns tend to sleep a LOT. I worked from home quite a bit until DS was super mobile.

you prob won't be employee of the year but it's definitely possible to make it work for a little while

  • @tinattt23 I think that really depends on your child. With L I can stay on the bed and grade papers most of the day as long as I keep him fed. He is happy in his bouncer or walker  tormenting the dogs. Somedays he needs lots more hands on, but most of the time I can put him on the floor and he will play fetch with the pups, or beat everything with his noise making hammer.

If you have a really hands-on baby then you might need some help. Although, I personally recommend at least 1 day off from taking care of baby a week. You can relax a bit, get caught up/ahead or just take longer on a task than you can otherwise. It will also give your LO a chance to have some social that you don't have to take time off for.

  • @slartybartfast FI's job is very flexible with hours. As long as his projects get done, it doesn't matter when he does them. Mines a little more structured but just in the sense I need to be available during normal work hours even if not everything is done during that time. If one of us has a call or something, then the other is on baby duty.

My my mom gets off work at 3 everyday so she could help if we have catch up work at the end of day. Grandma is nearby but a little too old to keep up for too many hours at a time.
  • @tinattt23 I couldn't do it, but my child was demanding and wanted what he wanted.  He was a wonderful baby, as long as he got what he needed ASAP.  For the first few months lots of babies cluster feed and don't like to be put down - this is called the 4th trimester.  In my opinion, after that time they start to 'play' and really enjoy engaging face to face.  Can you give your child that while you're both working?  Only you know how demanding your new baby will be and your jobs are.  Some babies are so chill that this wouldn't be a problem.  Mine was not.
