Re: GD Check-In - Week of 7/18

  • Hi Ladies! I just heard from my OB.  They agreed to more testing!  Now we will hopefully get an accurate diagnosis.

  • @camichael84 I'm so sorry :( I can imagine how frustrated and helpless you feel!  How many hours was it from when you took your insulin to testing your fasting level?  And how many hours from eating your bedtime snack to testing?  Just wondering if changing the timing might help?

  • @sarafuss The only thing they changed so far is upping my slow acting from 15 units to 20 units. I took it at my usual time around 9:30 pm.  Had 1/2 cup of chocolate slow turned Edy's with 2 T of PB and a string cheese around 10:30. Was hungry again at midnight, so had 1/4 cup of walnuts then. Tested my fasting at 7:50.

  • Well it sounds like you're doing everything right!  So frustrating!  Have you tried greek yogurt for a bedtime snack?  I haven't been eating it this pregnancy since ice cream has been working but it gave me good fasting numbers in my last pregnancy.  Hopefully today was just a fluke and tomorrow the higher dose gives you an awesome number!

  • @camichael84 Oh mama, I'm so sorry you're experiencing this rollercoaster :(. As others have said, you are doing everything right, and I can see how frustrating that must be to not get the results you imagined. While I don't have a lot of experience with GD as a nurse, I do have a fair amount of experience with newly diagnosed diabetics (type 1 and 2), and if it's any consolation, adjusting insulin levels can take time! And I can imagine that it can be even more stressful in pregnancy when you have such a finite amount of time to get adjusted. Our bodies need to adjust and adapt to the new medication, just like any medication, regardless of whether or not we produce it naturally. I hope they are able to get you on the right dose's so that things stay consistent and therapeutic for you. Sending love and happy vibes to you, keep your chin up girl, I have a feeling you're days away from a positive turning point.

@sarafuss I haven't. I'm not a big yogurt fan. Triscuits, cheese, and sausage links were giving me lower fasting numbers than anything else for a while. I think I'm going to try those again tonight to see if there is any difference with that.

Eta: I may pick some yogurt up and force it down tomorrow night. :)

Try getting a pre-mixed (not fruit on the bottom) and freeze it for a few hours. Maybe a different consistency will improve it for you!

  • @AnnaS930 I'll definitely try it frozen first! I've never had it that way, but I could see it improving it for me.

  • I'm not a big yogurt fan either.  And I ate it frequently enough last pregnancy that I haven't had it since lol.  That's a good suggestion @AnnaS930 to try it frozen!  That seems like it would help!

  • I haven't frozen yogurt in years, but used to do it as a kid all the time. If left too long it will solidify and you have to kind of shave it with a spoon to eat it - but it's still so good.

@camichael84 I'm so sorry to hear you're having such a hard time. I wish there was a way to make it easier for you. Hopefully you find the dose you need soon so you can relax a little. :(

Out of curiosity, have you tried testing after specific foods to see if there's any kind of pattern for what's causing spikes? I see PP are recommending yogurt, but actually yogurt (even low fat greek, without fruit or anything) causes my sugar to skyrocket, so I avoid it and anything with whey/milk protein. I don't know if something like that would work for you and I'm not sure what you've tried so far, I just hope you get whatever help you need!

  • So I just got back from seeing my family doctor, which the nurse at the diabetic clinic suggested since it looks like I'm going to have to start taking insulin. Normally I would be seen by the endocrinologist, but she's on mat leave.

We live in a smaller area/town, and the closest one is in Victoria, so my GP is referring me to the OBGYN now.
In our area, none of the OB's do primary care unless you have a high risk or complicated pregnancy; you either are cared for by your GP or a midwife for an uncomplicated pregnancy. I chose to go with a midwife, and I've developed a great relationship with all of them (there are 4 in the practice that you rotate through).

While I've heard amazing things about the OB I'm going to be seen by, I'm ridiculously bummed that my midwife possibly won't be with me for the birth of our daughter. My GP said that if all goes well and it looks like I might have a standard delivery, there's still the possibility that the midwife can still be on my team and the OB will just be on call to consult or step in if things get bad. But it's still me dealing with the fact that less than 10 weeks from my due date I'm now dealing with a new practitioner that I don't know, I don't have a relationship with and I have to establish that trust with them. I know it's necessary since I'll need more testing, more follow-up with the insulin, and more appointments to make sure things are progressing, but I'm still moping...

  • @yellowrose314 - that seems like a valid reason for moping, but try not to dwell on it. Meet the new OB with an open mind and keep your fingers crossed that you can still work with your midwife as planned.. and if not, then know that you're lucky that they switched you over and that you and baby will get the level of care needed for your situation!

  • @jln27 My highs are co-related to the time of day, not specific foods. I eat a lot of the same things-- partly because I'm a creature of habit and partly because it's easier to do leftovers for lunch for my daughter and I. Nothing has ever consistently spiked my sugar. My issue has been with my fasting being too high when I wake up (basically the only time I can't control it with diet or exercise) then subsequently my breakfast numbers will be high (when I was on the Glyburide breakfast could go either way... it's always high since switching to insulin). It is the same issue I had the first time I had GD, but was much easier to control with the Glyburide last time.

@yellowrose314  Sorry you're feeling down. I really hope your midwife can be there for your birth. Keep in mind that you'll have frequent appointments from here out with your new OB. Hopefully that will give you time to feel comfortable with them.

  • @yellowrose314 awe that's such a strange/annoying situation to be in.
I hope that it goes as smoothly as possible!
