One nap a day already?

My son will be ten months old on Monday and his nap schedule has been changing drastically over the last month and a half and now he's down to one nap a day. He used to wake up at 7:30 and nap approximately two hours later. Then he'd have another nap around 2 or 3 and then  bed at 8pm. Then he started pushing his first nap back by three then four hours. So his second nap started happening at 5 or 6 and he'd stay up until 9:30! Recently he dropped the last nap altogether. So he's up at 7:30 for the day, naps from 11:30-1:30 and then stays awake until bed at 8pm. He never acts overtired or fussy during the day so I'm not going to force a second nap and his one nap is usually a solid two hours. I knows it's early for one nap a day, is anyone else in the same situation?

Re: One nap a day already?

  • We had a few days of this last month...but unlike your LO, my LO was a hot mess and beyond overtired. He was teething! We are back to two naps and finally(maybe?!) getting into a grove of up at 7:30am, naps two hours later, naps again 2/3 hours after that then bedtime around 8pm! Finally. But LO isn't sleeping through the night or on his own....but at least he's starting to sleep at normal hours.

  • We are. LO in exact same schedule... First nap 2 hours after wake up, second nap 3-3.5 hours late, then bed around 8/8:30 (pushed back because of summer) I prefer she get two but were thinking of tryingone nap a day because she's been fighting her second nap and naps have gotten shorter. We'd just push back her morning nap, but we'll see how it goes!
  • Same exact thing here. I really need the second nap for my sanity but she is fighting it every day. Then she wants to nap at 5-530 and then she's up until 930-10, which I am not down with. Ugh. She has been feeling crummy lately so maybe she's just been "off" for the last week or so. I was hoping to keep two naps until 15 months or so.

I think it's a little early but I know that DS2 can definitely make it through some days with only 1 nap.  I wouldn't want to go to that all the time if only because I enjoy him being on a 2 nap a day schedule for my down time. How long is his first nap? It might help to cap that and keep it short in order to promote a shorter wake time between the two naps and to preserve bedtime.  Is that possible?

ETA: I have the hardest time when DS sleeps in a little in the morning.  I always wake him up by a certain time in order to make sure we stay on schedule the rest of the day.
  • We've been on a 1 nap a day schedule now for I think over a month with a rare second nap here or there.

Unlike the rest of you I'm actually much happier this way. Her naps are always a headache. She fights and fights and the only way to get her to sleep is to take her out in the car or bounce on a yoga ball. And then hold her through her whole nap or else she wakes up.

One nap a day means I only have to do that once lol. So definitely not down time for me.

She's happy until bedtime unless she takes her nap too early then she needs a second nap (usually catnap). Goes down easily--happy to see her crib unlike her naps-- and sleeps through the night.

So we're on 1 nap a day and it's actually working for us

  • We have almost the exact same schedule. I have to say I do miss the 2 long nap because that was when I got dimmer started so now I'm having to reschedule everything and getting ready for my kids to back to school.
  • I am on the rare side here he still wants three naps a day. When I was away I barely got one out of him but his schedule was all messed up. He is back to a morning nap a nooner and mid afternoon with bed at 8ish asleep til 6:30-7 am.

My LO normal schedule still is odd also. Idk if you call it 3 naps or just waking to eat?! He wakes up around 6/7AM, chugs 8oz bottle...then is asleep before an hour goes by....but he will sleep until 9 or later. Then will take two more naps in the day before an 8-9pm bedtime. On a normal day! Lol
  • We are still on 2 naps right now. She is moving to the toddler room at daycare in a week and they only do 1 nap. I am super nervous about it. I'm just not sure she is ready. I am really hoping it goes well.
  • Lovelee he is awake 2-2 1/2 hours between wake up and first nap, it's nuts. But I was a good sleeper and DH loves his sleep too.

  • One nap per day here for the past week.  It's great because she's going to bed at 7:30 now instead of 9.   :)

  • My guy is transitioning to just one nap a day now. It's hard. Today he only napped for maybe an hour? Then insisted on staying up until bedtime, so he was awake and crabby for 6+ hrs. I suppose I could've put him down for a nap at 5:30, but what's the point when bedtime is 7-7:30.
