Re: August/September IVF/FET

  • @wifeinraleigh28- wow, only $1900 for PGS?! I would probably do that too. For some reason, its like $1500 to biopsy the embryo and then the cost of the test is like $2-3k wherever they send it. I may double check that now though. Perhaps your clinic is including the biopsy cost in your IVF total cost? I am so lucky and thankful to have insurance coverage (up to $15k), but the downside is that everything is billed individually to insurance so I won't really know what anything is costing until I get my EOB a week or two later... so just trying not to stress about costs since I should be able to get at least one full round in for the $15k and then we will figure it out from there if it doesn't work this time. Congrats on starting stim's!! who ever thought we would be so excited for shots!! I'm sure you will respond well since your diagnosis is MFI right? Sending good vibes!

@kk4564- how exciting to get started!! glad they caught the mistake now and it wasn't too much a delay. I hear you about seeing the ultrasound.. def not something you need right now. Maybe you can just pull away a little for the next few weeks while you go through all this.. people do get so "busy" in the summer anyways

  • @kk4564 Yes I think it's normal to get a period when you start stims, especially if you were on BCP prior.  When I was on the pill back when we were trying to avoid pregnancy (which makes me laugh so hard now) I would always start my period 4 days after I stopped the active pills.  So it's basically the same thing, only I started stims 4 days after stopping the active pills.  So it makes sense that I would get some kind of period.  But I think because I started stims, it isn't going to be that heavy or last very long.  The meds are jump starting my body into follicle production mode!  And I feel you on the ultrasound photo.  I would be upset too!

@JamieH2000 It's completely possible that the biopsy cost was lumped in.  Not sure.  But the payment we're making to the PGS lab separate is around $1900.  And yeah, our dx is MFI and I personally have no diagnosis.  I responded very well to the follistim when we did our IUIs and had lots of follicles, so I'm hoping for a good response this time too!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 good luck with the stims! So fun to watch, read, how much progress everyone is making. It makes time go by fast!
I can't remember who posted about working at a Catholic hospital,  but I feel your pain. Ironically,  the insurance they used had a better fertility maximum but very very specific on who could use the money and how.  Anyway, thoughts with you on the irony of trying to make a family and not using Bcp but still being treated like that!
AFM I think I'm ready to be added to the chart.
I start follistim on 9/15 after a month of bcp (not excited about that) date of retrieval would be 9/28, God willing.  Then transfer would be on or wedding anniversary!  I'm not holding my breath on those dates.
Question though- does everyone take prednisone(or another oral steroid ) on their protocol? I'm allergic and md seemed perplexed about how to proceed when I reminded her! Nervous that's going to make or break it, but I've had two cases of angioedema (swelling) in my tongue and can't get pregnant if I'm dead.
    Thanks.

  • Thanks ladies for all your support.

@wifeinraleigh28 Your PGS testing is super cheap.  It was 4k at our clinic, and we opted out the first round as it was the only thing DH's insurance doesn't cover.  If this FET doesn't work out (but I hope it does) and we do another round, we'll probably do the PGS.

  • It's so exciting to hear/read about everyone's progress so far!

AFM - still waiting, no surprise. Last night DH and I and some friends went to the Guns N Roses concert outside Boston. I only know a few of their songs, but my husband grew up in a die-hard GNR family...lol. the concert was AMAZING! and Axl Rose sounded a LOT better than I was expecting! But today....i'm nursing a quadruple shot starbucks this morning - so tired!!
  • @omarismyhomeboy...thanks for the encouragement. So, after the failed IVF they ordered a genetic screening through Counsyl Genetics that tests for MTHFR. Basically, I cannot process folic acid and have to take a special methylfolate vitamin, aspirin for blood clots and just try to eat as much natural folate as possible...Since learning this and making changes, I feel like a new person, I am not tired anymore, more stable moods, etc., this should also help egg quality. Let me know if you have any other questions, it is quite common amongst infertile ladies :) it can really affect fertility, hormones, implantation, etc.

@JESSABER0414 Just wanted to touch base with you, we will be on the same cycle, I should start stims around Mid-September. After my failed IVF, we have been recommended to do PGS and FET. He is also going to lower my stim meds so I get around 10-13 instead of 17. Should help with the quality. Good Luck and lets stay connected!

AFM- I made the decision to transfer to ACRM in Atlanta. They have merged with Colorado and have superior lab technology and pooled research and experience. I am feeling very positive about the future and am trying (for the 1st time) to embrace the mind-body connection. I found an infertility counselor, doing more gentle yoga and hope to start acupuncture.
    **Trigger Warning**
Just to add a bit of hope for us all, one of my BF's went through 3 years and 2 IVF Rounds for her first child. Surprise, 2 years later, she conceived naturally. She said that just being happy and not having that pressure and stress is what made the difference. It just goes to show, that sometimes (not always), there is some truth to the mind-body connection.

  • I'm feeling a little better now that I've had a few days to process all of the info from the appt on Monday.  A few other notes from the appt that I wanted to share that seem relevant to other discussions we've been having on here recently...
    • Estimated cost for PGS - $5k (I am definitely curious how the price can differ so much from clinic to clinic, since I'm assuming all clinics outsource that testing)
    • We both got blood samples taken for genetic testing through Counsyl (12 panel test of the 'most common' genetic carrier disorders).  I'm really excited for the results - I've always loved genetics (nerd alert!), so that was probably the most exciting part of the day for me.  No plans for PGD unless we're both carriers for the same disease(s).
    • Not planning to do PGS with this first cycle.  We'll reevaluate if we have to do a 2nd retrieval.  Anyone know if you can do PGS on frozen embryos?  Like if we xfer 1 blast & it doesn't take... can we do PGS on the remaining frozen blasts before a future xfer?
I just sent off a fax to get pre-approval for my injectables!  It's exciting to just be able to do SOMETHING besides sit & pass the time.

  • I love that you looked that all up from the May IUI! And it makes me sad that IUI was so unsuccessful for all of us. I really hope we have good results doing IVF like the June IVF group- they are getting so many BFPs so hopefully that is all of us in 2 months!

Also, about your question about PGS later on frozen, my RE told me they could do that. They would just have to thaw, then biopsy and then refreeze the embryos, so the extra risk is the thaw/refreeze twice since they told me that like 2-4% of embryos don't survive the thaw/refreeze process. We have considered doing that if we end up with a decent amount to freeze and don't have success after 1 or 2 transfers. I think it would just depend on the numbers because its the same price for up to 8 embryos..so I wouldn't want to pay like $4k to test 1 or 2.

  • @Monica54321  as far as PGS on frozen, I asked about that after my failed FET earlier this year.  My doctor discouraged it, because she said going through the extra thaw and freeze is risky.  We're doing our second FET next week, and if that doesn't work, we will go through the whole cycle again.

  • Hi ladies - Hope you don't mind, but i'm joining in.  I'm aiming for a FET sometime late August/early September.  Met with my doctor to discuss the plan of attack on Monday and got all my baseline bloodwork done.  We're just waiting on AF so I can finalize the necessary U/S testing for insurance and then start my medications.  If AF doesn't show up within a week, he is actually going to induce my period since my bloodwork looks good and with my PCOS who knows when AF might show up anyway!  We went over my frosties and it looks like we'll start with a FET of a 4bb embryo (insurance only allowed 1 FET at a time), but we feel good about the embryos we would go with next should that not take (a 6bb and 5bb).   They're all 5 days.

I tried playing catch up on this thread and noticed there are quite a few of you from May IUI cycles that didn't pan out.  I want to wish you all the best of luck with IVF/FET.  I don't know if this will help at all, but i had multiple years of failed IUI and saw drastic improvements with IVF.  Emotionally it was a huge leap for me to accept that I had to move on to IVF (and scary as hell), but at the end of the day it was worth it and I wish you all the best of luck on this journey.  Fingers crossed for all.

  • @Monica54321 I think they said about a week. I originally thought it would take a few weeks but my rep at Genesis genetics confirmed a week.

By the way, I just finished watching Ali Wong's Baby Cobra stand up, and it was hilarious. Lots of pregnancy, progesterone suppository, timed intercourse jokes. If you're ok with a bit of vulgarity and could use a laugh, watch this on Netflix.  : )

Hello - I have a question for those of you that have been through this before or just know a lot about it.  I started my stims on Friday for the first time.  I am on 225 Gonal F and 2 vials on Menopur per night.  Today I got the call that I need to lower my meds because my follicles aren't big enough to match my E2 number. So I will now only take 1 vial menopur and 150 Gonal, plus I have to take a new shot Ganirelix to prevent ovulation.  Seems weird to lower the meds, but I guess they need the follicles to catch up.

I feel like I am heading down the road to having it cancelled for no response.  I am so sad.  Hoping for some good vibes.  I go back Friday.  This is such an emotional ride.  Tips to getting those follies to catch up?

    Thanks!

EDIT (about 20 mins later)- Like a crazed maniac I am googling "high E2 small follicles".  I found something dubbed "coasting" where Drs lower the stems to give the follicles time to catch up so they don't have to cancel.  So at least I know it happens.

I hope you all have a great day.  This process is not for the weak of heart or faith.  I am thinking of you all who are going through this for the first or fifth time.  This is so much tougher mentally than I thought it would be and frankly I have barely started the process.  Hope you all get the family of your dreams. You deserve it.

    Me: 41  DH: 44  DD: 9
    IVF: ER 7/16 40 follies, 23 eggs, 19 mature,
    12 fert w/icsi, 6 blasts, 3 PGS norm, 1 unknown.

@LeFemmeViolette congrats on your 4!! Also, I watched a clip from the ali Wong stand up on Facebook today and literally just added it to my watch list--it looked hilarious!!

I have found all of the differences in everyone's protocols very interesting throughout this process--I guess the cost of testing is just one more of those things. We were told at our ivf consultation that PGS would cost $4-5,000. @wifeinraleigh28 seriously wishing my clinic's price was closer to yours!!!

@shauna43 I feel your pain about your co-worker!! It seems like everyone around me is pregnant and they all announce it like it was a shocking miracle-wow! How did this even happen?!?! Haha I wish that would happen to me!! My bff just had a gorge little girl but even with her--they got pregnant on accident and literally found out while they were talking about possibly divorcing! I've been struggling with judgmentalness-I see other people and I'm like "I could be such a better mom than them!" or "My life is so much more ready for a kid than theirs is!" Which is terrible, I know, but I can't seem to help it. I pray for strength and peace.

AFM, I've got injection class tomorrow and leave on Friday for Ocean City for the week. This is making getting my meds complicated--I got a phone call at 8pm that said my insurance wants me to use a different med than my dr prescribed but they weren't able to reach my dr (duh, it's 8pm) and what do I want to do? After all, it would only be about $1800 to just pay out of pocket for this one medication (the others are all covered 100% by insurance). Well, it sure would be easier to handle this if it wasn't 8pm!! Also, the meds were supposed to be shipped this am so I don't even know what's going on. So I am just taking a deep breath, trying to let go of my irritation, and planning to get up extra early tomorrow to call my nurse. Ugh as if this process didn't have enough stress!

I am so excited for everyone's progress!! I think about all of you ladies much more often than I post, and I pray for all of you every day.
  • @Monica54321 I'm a nerd too!! haha I was so excited to have karyotype testing done. I'm considering asking to see my results.. they came back normal but it was still exciting lol

@Elyse1384 welcome! Good luck with the FET, hopefully AF arrives soon and you can get started.

@LeFemmeViolette so glad you got four little blastocysts. There is nothing that makes me more nervous than waiting to find out if the little ones survived. Last time I had 21 eggs retrieved and only one made it to the blastocyst stage... Just keep picturing yourself holding that little newborn in your arms!

@bells52000 I haven't had any experience with that mid cycle, but from my last IVF to this one my doses have been lowered. Hopefully it all works out for you and there is no cancellation.

@srh18 I'm hoping this all works out for you. I'm assuming most people are from America? In Australia, it seems its a much cheaper process.. my meds only cost $150 for all of them. They used to be included in the price of IVF but there was a change for some reason. I'm starting to realise how lucky I am over here..

AFM, I've just started my spray (has anyone else done the nasal spray??), and my baseline is next Wednesday, fx everything goes well and I'll start the injections the next day. It's starting to feel very real!
Hope everyone is having a good day

@wifeinraleigh28 good luck tomorrow!  I hope there's lots of good, growing follicles!

have any of you done a spontaneous start?  That's what my RE has recommended. I thought we would be doing estrogen priming but after speaking with the nurse, that's not the case.

  • @Kp214 - what is a spontaneous start? i don't think i've heard that phrase before?
  • Hey all! I am back on the board after taking a few month break during a heavy travel time for my husband that preventing us from doing IVF. I started my estrogen priming protocol yesterday with a patch, and took a Ganirelix today. I have an appointment Monday to see if we will be able to try an IVF cycle, and if so, we will get started next week. I am feeling refreshed after a little break and am optimistic.
  • Hey hey ladies!! I hope everyone is doing well and I hope all the ladies stimming are getting some good response :)

It means that I will call them when my period starts, no bcp or priming prior to that, and then start stimming. So, nothing to possibly suppress me, I guess.  I just haven't heard of that before unless it was a natural cycle.  It makes me nervous.

  • Hi ladies!! Well, I've officially left the June/July IVF board with a BFN and am hoping to get my BFP with all ya'll!!  A little about me: DH and I have been married over 2 years and TTC since the wedding. 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs with a couple cancel cycles scattered here and there because of weird spots/cysts that ended up disappearing. This time around we're doing an EPP (estrogen priming protocol) where I'll start with patches after I ovulate in 2 weeks. BSL US is tomorrow and we'll go from there. Anyone else done an EPP? I'm hoping third time's the charm!!!
  • @kp214 I did a spontaneous cycle, called on CD 1 and started stims soon after. My doctor said she would do it differently next time. It seems like I start to "Recruit follicles" very early, and as such I only stimmed for 7 days because I had 2 huge follicles kind of take over right off the bat. I ended up with 9 retrieved and 6 fertilized with ICSI. Overall, my RE is calling it a successful cycle, because we have ended up with 1 PGS normal embryo that is great quality, but she did say it was no where near as good as she expected with my higher antral follicle count and good reserve data.

It did seem like it was something she did somewhat frequently though, so I'm assuming if it is a common strategy it must work for her more so than not. It always amazes me the differences in protocols all around. Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks, @BornReady . I appreciate it. My afc has been 7-9 but only 3-4 mature.  I'm hoping for a better result this time. Ive also been supplementing and hope that has helped the quality. I don't know when I'll have to get meds. It makes me nervous to wait until CD1 to call about that.

  • Hi Ladies - I've been off these boards for a while now, but thought I'd check in - was excited to see an Aug/Sept group, so I must be ready to join again :)

I recognize some of your names (sorry you're still here too) but a lot of new ones... I will try to get caught up.

afm.... I had my retrieval in Jan. March transfer cancelled due to thin lining. April transfer resulted in an ectopic.... took a long time to get my numbers down and get my period again (at least it felt like forever!). Now I have to have 1 cycle until they will start meds for transfer #2. Should put in sometime in Sept for FET.

A little inspiration for the day! Happy Friday everyone! I hope everyone is doing well with where they are in their cycles.

AFM- I think my OCD is starting to kick in and I am googling everything FET and things to do during the TWW. Last TWW I was a mess, I started testing at 5DP5DT and then I started driving myself crazy looking at tests believing I saw something, and then getting really sad a few days later when the tests weren't getting darker...So this time I told myself NO TESTING EARLY. My transfer is almost a week away and I am trying to put together some ideas and things to do in the TWW that can help distract me and help time pass. Any ideas anyone :)

  • Morning ladies......

Well today is my CD5 and I had my Lupron baseline this morning....

So far they counted 15 follies (2 years ago I was at 9, and have been a steady 11/12 for the year) On my little "IVF sheet" that the doctor gave us the doctor said he thought Id only get up to 20 follicles, so either I'm really close and that's good OR I'm too close and that's bad!

Hopefully that is good news, but I guess ill find out later.
