@jas1982 I am pretty surprised too but I am in Canada so maybe it's different requirements. I'm going to look into it further as I think it's ridiculous that they'll cover my ultrasounds, medications and other tests but draw the line at a pump.
My insurance only covers Ameda PY, which is what I used with DD. I have a car adaptor and might leave that one in the car and plan to buy a PIS for home use. Since I have my old PY in storage, I haven't even checked when I can order a new one.
@unwritteN12 only done brief research but from what I've found, there are adapters that allow you to use Medela flanges on the spectra. So you can get the larger Medela flanges and hopefully that helps.
@UnwritteN12 Do you know what size shields you need? In my experience, shield size and breast size don't necessarily correlate. I have small nipples (size 22.5mm flanges I think) but relatively large breasts (E pre-preg, ginormous postpartum). Just a thought!
@UnwritteN12, I read the same thing when comparing the two. Then I read another critique that said it's your nipple size, not breast size, that might affect that. I was like, oh that makes sense, you can have A cups and have gigantic nipples. I have no idea what my cup is now, I'm calling them mega boobs, def bigger than D's, but I still went ahead with the Spectra because it has no back flow and is quieter. Don't know about your insurance but with mine if the dr had written that it was necessary to receive a hospital grade I would have been able to get the s1 (travel battery). I was able to upgrade for $90 but didn't, just went with the S2 and it showed up at my door in two days. I just urge everyone to check different vendors. Target offered the Pump in Style, my local DME shop offered the Freestyle, and an online source offered the S2 (and even the S9!), all covered. Everyone but Target offered two supply kits too! So Target was kind of a rip off for my situation.
I went theoug Aeroflow. I filled out a form and they contacted my doctor and insurance, which was perfect because I'm lazy. I had a list of about 7 pumps to choose from and ultimately chose the Spectra s2 and it should arrive tomorrow.
I just called and my BCBS does not cover a breast-pump, unless the newborn is hospitalized and mother is discharged, they cover the rental or purchase which ever costs less. Big bummer! I was hoping it had changed since the last time I checked (when pregnant with DS).
I have Independence Blue Cross and they gave me a list of medical suppliers I have to call, check their stock of non hospital grade pumps and go from there. Ugh.
Yes- it is nipple size, not breast size that matters. I encourage everyone to see a Lactation consultant, and I encourage you to bring your pump. They will be able to help you if you feel like the parts might not be the right size.
