Re: Ask a BTDT mom questions about birth/recovery/breastfeeding

  • @schaze When they are really young, on your chest is the way to do it. Most newborns seem to hate tummy time now that they usually sleep on their backs. Getting down with them and talking to them is the best you can really do to encourage them. I would do it several times a day for a few minutes at a time (as long as I could tolerate the fussing) until DD got used to it. She was a very early roller probably because she hated that I kept putting her on her tummy, haha!

  • Soooo my baby won't really sleep in a bassinet for more than 5-10 minutes.  He'll sleep some in a rock n play and he likes sleeping on our chests but I know they're supposed to be flat on their backs... I don't know what to do because I want to keep him safe but I also need him to sleep sometimes at least...anybody know how to solve this issue?

It depends on what you're comfortable with, but my daughter (who is now almost 3) slept great in her rock n play from birth to 4 months.
  • @austinjl I echo that it depends on what you're comfortable with. We err on the way safe side because of a SIDS loss in DH's family. Eventually, baby has to sleep if you are consistent and that's the only way you allow. Are you doing a tight swaddle? DD seemed to hate it initially, but it was the only way she stayed asleep. If you stick with it, baby will adjust. If it helps in the short term, you can try getting baby in a deep sleep before putting him down if you aren't already. We did that for a while. My DD was ridiculously colicky and never happy awake, but slept through the night at 10 weeks I think because we were so vigilant about our nighttime routine. (Didn't sleep more than 20 minutes during the day for a good 6 months!) The first 8-10 weeks were torture though. Good luck!

  • @austinjl Mine sleeps best in the rock and play also, and I actually worry less about him in there than the pack n play because I can tuck the swaddle in better and he can't kick it around, plus his head seems to stay in one place better. But I also sleep right next to the r&p on the couch, so I can keep a close eye on him and reach him easily. The pediatrician at the hospital said sleeping him in the r&p was completely fine. Like PP said though, it's totally up to what you're comfortable with.

  • Thanks ladies!!!  @whataboutscience thanks for reminding me about swaddling.  We kinda were half-a$$ing that because he kept breaking out with his arms.  Then I remembered at the hospital they did two swaddled blankets so we tried that last night and it worked so much better!
  • @shaylalr I ended up a pants size smaller with smaller hips. Everyone is different!
  • Anyone know if I can have a clogged milk duct before baby is born? I suddenly found a small red, hard spot on the side of my beeast that is very tender to touch. I'm 38 weeks as of yesterday. Not sure if it's that or something else? Tried massaging it in the shower but didn't do much to correct it although I was able to squeeze a little milk out. Worth calling my doctor tomorrow or just keep trying what I'm doing? I have a pump I could pull out, but don't know how effective it is before you start nursing baby. Plus, I feel bad if that pushes all the colostrum out.

  • @whataboutscience It probably isn't a clogged duct because you don't have your milk in yet. I have the same lumpiness and I thinknit is just enlarged duct for the milk.
  • Can someone fill me in on the deal with baby shoes?  We don't have any and I'm assuming that's fine for a newborn summer baby.  But at what age do babies wear shoes?  Are they actually shoes or slipper things?  This is really confusing to me! haha

  • @megstervt Confession: I didn't put my son in shoes until he was 12 months.  Shoes confused me so much! But really, they don't need shoes until they are walking. In the winter time he just wore socks and summer he was barefoot.  It's totally a preference thing I guess, but I didn't mind him being barefoot.  I am sure I probably got some side-eyes from people.... but...... Oh well

  • I actually read that shoes can impede normal development of walking because it doesn't allow the foot to strengthen naturally. I have some booties and socks but am holding off on actual shoes. At this point they're just cute and decorative.

  • Make sure shoes are very flexible!  I have Robeez ones to keep DD2's feet covered this winter. I am hoping they help keep her socks on. However, 90% of the time she will have no shoes on. I most likely will just put on a cute pair for a picture and send it to whoever gave us the shoes and then take the shoes off.

When DD started walking, I put her in Stride Rite, See Kai Run or Pediped shoes. All 3 brands are known for being flexible and promoting healthy foot development.
  • my first two walked at 9 months...so I started shoes earlier than some (when they they started pulling up and standing on their own at 6 months). I have always only used Robeez until they got walking down really well! I love Robeez and definitely recommend them. (I've even gotten lucky and found a couple pairs on Amazon for $10!
  • So Robeez or socks can be worn this fall and winter for warmth? And then flexible, but more structured, shoes once he's walking?  I'm assuming once he's walking that shoes would really be just for out of the house.  Around our home he could still be barefoot when it's warm enough?

  • In winter I found DD's shoes helpful because she never kept socks on, but we found boots with Velcro a little high up the ankle, so we could keep her feet warm.

@megstervt I have a 18mo old that rarely wears shoes still.  For me they are the biggest pita and a waste of money because they grow so quickly. I would wait until they walk everywhere.

  • Thanks for your thoughts everyone.  Not sure why my brain was having such a hard time figuring that out.

  • What's the fix for gassy babies?
  • @austinjl we have used gripe water in the past!
  • @austinjl we have used both gas drops and gripe water and the gripe water seems to help him more. We use Little Remedies brand. Agree that the massage and stretches help. Baby yoga "tiger in the tree" position has helped calm E down a lot too. When he's calm he can then actually move that gas out. Also nursing/feeding with head above stomach has made a difference for us instead of straight across nursing.
  • @theshannondee How much gripe water do you give him and when? The dosage on the bottle seemed like a lot to me and I wasn't sure of the most effective time to give it to him, so I kind of chickened out of giving him any, which I know is probably silly.

  • @winnie1122 so he should be getting 5ml and I agree it seems like a lot (almost two syringes!) so I've been giving him 3ml and get the same results still. He enjoys the taste and I give it to him really slow. I tend to give it when he's distressed he can't work out the gas himself. I always pair it with baby yoga once it's had a couple minutes to reach his tummy.
  • Did any of you have your water break in a trickle form? Ive noticed that it trickles whenever I have a contraction. It started after I had another huge part of my mucus plug fall out so Im unsure if its just extra discharge or amniotic fluid.
  • On 6/30, I had water trickle out at 4:30 AM. I wasn't sure if I had peed. I put a pad on and more water leaked around 5 AM, contractions started at 6 AM and my water really broke (in my doctor's office) at 8 AM. Good luck @babycakesday
  • Does anyone have an idea of what a stitched up episiotomy should look like? I thought every thing was fine with mine and it wasn't bothering me the first 3 days and I didn't look at it so I don't know what to compare to. I looked today and it's not a flat stiched up area but Rather bumpy and sticking out a bit which I now know why it's bothersome and hurting when I sit or even the pad rubs it the wrong way. Curious if it was like that the entire time or if something is wrong and I should call the dr. Any suggestions or others experience. Taking 2 baths a day, using spray bottle and pat dry, and using tucks pads and the spray the hospital gives you.
