Any tricks on getting baby to sleep longer at night? My 3.5 month old doesn't even nap hardly during the day (maybe 2 hours all day) and is still getting up 5+ times a night, longest stretch being 3 hours.
My LO is a still a poor napper but has become a much better sleeper at night. My favourite website for sleep advice is preciouslittlesleep.com - see what applies to you. Putting LO in the crib drowsy but awake has really helped me. It took a long time for LO to get the message but he can now fall asleep on his own without asking for me.
I wish I had advice for you but I'm pretty much in the same boat. Mine is 14.5 weeks. She has been a poor napper from day one. She was almost sleeping through the night (nothing special I did) until she hit 12 weeks and it all went down the drain.
I'm hoping its the 4 month sleep regression hitting us so we get it over with early.
This is the only way he'd nap today. I'm no help. We love to sleep strike! He hates sleeping. Always rolls onto his tummy now and just cries. Was sleeping from 8:30-7:40 at night and as of the past two nights he wakes every two hours crying. Four month sleep regression early by two weeks. We are also cutting our first tooth... So way fun.
After going through 4 babies, this is my thought on sleep: You either have a good sleeper it you don't. As they, get older, bigger, and go through sleep regressions and wonder weeks, sleep habits will change. My 3rd was an amazing sleeper until the 4 mos regression and then she was a crap sleeper until age 2.
I was trying to keep my baby awake to make him go to bed good and tired, but I've noticed that the more he sleeps during the day, the more he sleeps at night! He actually will sleep through the night after a day of several giant naps. Try getting your LO to nap more maybe?

This! The longer you keep baby up, the less he will sleep. Sleep begets sleep.
I'm working on getting LO onto a nap schedule. His nighttime sleep is awesome and he'll go from 9pm-7am 80% of the time. During the day though he is a freaking monster when it comes to sleep and he won't nap unless he's passed completely out and I'm holding him. It's so hard to try to make someone sleep!!!!
I'd echo @Missingchampagne and @ladylolly89 ...the more my baby sleeps during the day the better she sleeps at night. I've also found she is happier during the day with more sleep.
I watch for sleep cues and then try and get her to go down by rocking or feeding. I'd also try white noise and keep the room dark/low light. I also have success rocking and gently patting LO on the back or butt to get her to sleep. My LO also likes to nap in her swing, so I do put her in there during the day if she is starting to get fussy and won't go down in her crib/RnP.
He goes down around 8:30 - 9:30PM, wakes once during the night for a feed between 2-3AM, and then is up for the day by 7am each morning. We also just transitioned him from a co-sleeper to a pack-n-play on Monday and he LOVES it. From what I can see, we have a wild sleeper on our hands. He woke up turned 180 degrees from how I placed him last night. He never ceases to amaze me.
I never try to keep him up. I take whatever cat/long/short naps I can get so that I can get some stuff done around the house or have some alone time.
Ditto what @kielpinskim said...sleeping habits will change most likely. I hope it gets better for you. Try low/minimal lighting, a nice bath with lavender oil, and/or adjusting the temp in your home that so LO can get nice and cozy.
Thanks ladies. I've tried getting him to nap a ton during the day and he just fights it. The few days that I have gotten him to nap for more than a few hours I can't get him to sleep until 11pm and then he still wakes at his usual 7am and just as many times through the night. I think he's going through 4 month regression cause its just getting increasingly worse. I think I'll start putting him down for naps in his crib for a few days to get used to it and then transition him from the bassinet to the crib at night. Maybe he needs more space..
LO just started doing 7 hours at night! Yay! But he fights sleep during the day. I noticed that I need to get him while he's happy within 1 to 1 1/2 hours after waking. I'm trying to get him to sleep anywhere else but on me. I hope daycare can help with this. But I do get him to sleep in between feelings.
LO gets probably four hours of sleep during the day. His choice. But he goes down for bed at 10 and sleeps until about 8 or so. So we just let him do his own thing
Haha... I keep reading all of you ladies talking about your babies sleeping through the night. Not to be cynical, but we were in the same boat till exactly two nights ago. The four month sleep regression that I kept hearing about hit two weeks early. The great thing about it is that it hits with a four week long wonder week and a growth spurt! So even though he had been sleeping from 8 to 7:30... He now wakes up every two hours and even though he cut out all his night feedings on his own, he now demands to be eat at around two or three... Every night. It's a nightmare because I almost was getting used to seven hours of consecutive sleep! It can start anywhere from 3- 6 months. So if you have a good sleeper like I did, buckle up... If not, it might be a good thing because then you won't feel so discouraged!.
My son's witching hour has been midnight to 1am since the day he was born, like clockwork. At 1:01, his whole body goes limp and he falls asleep, to sleep through the night. Weird huh?
I start him off in the rnp when he goes to bed (around 7) and then do a dream feed when I go to bed around 10. I usually get a 4-5 hour stretch after that and then we co-sleep. With the sleep regression, he's all over the place now so we co sleep more. Naps have gotten better since we started using the baby whisperer methods to get him to fall asleep by himself, but the only long nap he takes is in the swing. I need to transition him to the crib, but I feel like we are just barely getting by with his sleep now....

This is book is amazing at explaining babies sleep cycles. I've followed the advice for all 3 of my boys. It's not a miracle fix but it really helps you figure out when to put your baby down. I highly recommend!!

Lol. Yeah mine can't get much worse so I won't even notice it. Follow up though. I went to that precious sleep website and followed what they said. Nash now puts himself to sleep and is surprisingly doing better already! So thank you to whoever posted that.
