When will you tell your boss?

2»

Re: When will you tell your boss?

  • I will let my boss know when I start throwing up at work, (our bathroom is a 5-6 minute walk away)  or when I can't swing my appointments between shifts and need to ask for time off, if I make it to 12-13 weeks without having to say anything, I will let her know. We've had a very rough year being short staffed since one of our coworkers has been on MAT leave, she's going to be so discouraged when I tell her I will be taking MAT leave in March.

  • I am so torn on when to tell... My boss is also my mother, this is her first grandchild and she is out of town for another week at the office. I have to head back next week to train a new employee so I want to tell her before (in case I get severe MS) but I also don't want to have to announce it over the phone... I also just had my position change again to accommodate the new employee but it means I lose my benefits as well... Agh!!

I told my boss the day after we found out! I was supposed to fly to Boston with him and some execs the beginning of August (leave on Saturday, return on Tuesday). I was not looking forward to going because I was the only female and from past experiences, I feel like I have to babysit them. On 4w+3d, he walked in my office and told me to book my travel. I blurted out, "I'm not going! I'm pregnant!" haha. He was like, "OK. I'll get Jason to go. Congratulations!" That easy.

After the first trimester. She won't even be there when I go on my leave... Retiring-- lucky her! So it doesn't really matter!

  • I started a new job as a NICU RN a couple days before we found out. As usual as I started meeting new co workers everyone started asking if I had kids...I couldn't hold it in so I told my preceptor first (since I keep taking breaks to pee and other symptoms) and then I started blurting it out to almost everyone else lol. But only they know and my best friend. We're waiting until 12 weeks to tell family.
  • I'm lucky this time around. I'm a teacher and school is out for the summer! We go back for in service in August and I'll be 11 weeks. So I will just tell Admin when we return! We planned this FET like a party! lol I want to let them know right away upon return so they can plan for my leave!

  • I plan on telling my boss after the first trimester. My job is pretty flexible when it comes to maternity leave and they allow employees to take up to a year off, so I don't think I'll have any issues.

I am scared. To. Death. of telling my manager. I can't even fathom how I'll begin the cinversatuon, or when. As a nurse, it makes sense for them to know early so you can avoid the contagious patients and violent patients, but.. I don't want to tell her until after 12 weeks at least.....

ETA: would it be in poor taste to have my charge nurses know so they can assign me appropriately? It would probably make its way back to the manager though.. and then she'd be pissed I didn't tell her first...

  • I work in a psychiatric hospital and have told my immediate team, since we're very close and I feel safer having them know, in case something happened on the unit. I applied for a new position in the hospital that deals less with patient care, and more with billing/medical necessity. So I am nervous about telling them that they'll be down a staff member for a while come March, but I think I'll tell either the new boss or my current one (if I don't get the offer) after my first ultrasound. The following Monday I'll be 10 weeks, and I'm already getting a little bump/bloat going on. The more time they have to cover my time off, the better.

  • I talked to my boss and office manager today. They basically told me they will support me in whatever I want to do and that I can have as much or little of my job as I want.  And they don't have a maternity leave policy but they are going to look into it and see what they can do for me.  Right now I'm thinking I will do 20 hours at home and 20 hours at the office.  I will keep my fingers crossed that all of you get the support you need!  Thanks for sharing your situations with me, it was very helpful to get some different perspectives.

  • so my department is the main department for our other campuses as well, the girl who does my position at our california campus just gave her 1 week notice, so I'm sure we'll be seeing an increase in our workflow to help them out in the interim, so I'm afraid if I give my boss the details he'll get so nervous to imagine losing me LOL  so i'm probably going to wait until I have a few more scans, and am more certain, because not only am I high risk, but if this stays a twin pregnancy, it's going to mean more dr appt's and the possibility of bed rest early, so they'll have to be prepared for that in my absence, and I don't want to freak him out just yet LOL

  • This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I've been at my current job for almost 8 years, and I'm pretty close with my boss. However, I'm not really happy lately. But, to answer the question, I will probably tell him around 10 weeks.

Not sure if anyone has any thoughts/experience job hunting while pregnant? I am sending out a couple resumes, and I would definitely want to be up front about it with a potential employer even if it meant I didn't get a job.

  • @kap1988 it sounds like things worked out for you!! I'm so glad!
  • @SandwichLover it can be done! Just be cautious with insurance lapses (if you're currently on your company's coverage) and lack of FMLA if you jump. Also, if you stay on your company's policy and then don't go back, they can legally require that you pay the full premium payment of while you were out, verses your employee portion. That last bit is completely irrelevant if you are on DH's policy.
  • I'm in law enforcement so I will tell sooner than later for safety concerns.  Bosses are family oriented so I'm not worried about it.
  • So, my boss is one of my very best friends. I told him the day that I found out for the following reasons:

    1) I need the buffer at work. If i start having awful morning sickness he can help explain it off. Plus, my mood swings have been CRAZY I'm glad he knows that I'm not losing my mind.
    2) We have a once (ok, sometimes twice) weekly happy hour, so he would have figured it out within a week anyway.

My boss was was working on getting me a promotion and I'm pretty sure that I ruined that with the timing of this pregnancy. #worthit

Everyone else at work will find out sometime after the first tri.
  • Ill tell my boss when my dr appts n trips to the bathroom become an issue or when I start showing, whichever comes first

  • @hippiemama TY! I am DH's policy as far as insurance goes, so no worries there. I do worry about the lack of FMLA though by leaving, but I suppose I shouldn't get too far ahead of myself. I just sent my resume to a couple places so we'll see what happens! If nothing else it's good practice to get into the habit now for after baby. I have a 2 hour commute each way to my current job and I do not think that is something I want for post-baby life.

  • I'll probably tell her after my OB appt on 8/31 at the latest. However, I've been so nauseous that I might have to tell her sooner.

The day before I got my BFP, I was in her office and she told me that I looked miserable (and I was). I was nauseous, had a headache, and was super emotional. I almost started crying right there. I told her I had a migraine (which I do get occasionally), so she sent me home. Took a test when I got home and I got a super super faint line that if I didn't get a clearer BFP the next day I would still be debating if it was there.

Since then I've been able to buck up and smile and act like myself when I'm in meetings (sometimes with the help of a sour candy or some seltzer water). But if I get close to a meltdown again, I may have to tell her sooner than I'm planning.

  • I am Extremely!!!!! nervous to tell my manager. I got pregnant two weeks into my job and won't qualify for FML act. I work for a large pharmaceutical corporation so I don't know what will happen when it comes to maternity leave. Someone told me without FML I may only qualify for 6 weeks short term disablitlity. I'm hoping they'll hold my job for me if I want to take longer. It took my manager 4 months to hire me after the last person in my position left and I had to go through a month of training so I hope he'll work with me... If the company lets him. Does anyone know what companies normally do if you haven't worked there for a full year before your maternity leave?
  • Every company is different @BaylieGirl. If you have an employee handbook you can consult that and see if it has anything in there regarding maternity leave policies, otherwise I would definitely contact HR and ask them. Does your company offer or do you have any supplemental insurance like Aflac?
  • I'm struggling with when to tell my manager.

    **TW Prior Losses Briefly Mentioned**

I didn't tell her until I needed to be off when my MCs were confirmed.  I am hating a semi "new" assignment I have at work & given my history I don't think I can really deal with added stress right now.  I may end up telling her at my next 1 on 1.  IDK if I really want to say I'm pregnant I need to get off this project but it is Sooo tempting.

She probably will suspect when my RE visits become weekly though.

@hippiemama We aren't big enough for FMLA. But I'm pretty essential so there's no way they wouldn't bring me back after. I'm just wondering what pay is reasonable to ask for when I'm not entitled to anything. I have a few scenarios I'm going to propose. One is work part time from home for 3 or 4 months. Ideally though I'm gonna start with 3 months at full pay and see what they say. There's no harm in asking.
I would advise against working from home at first. Seriously a newborn is full time no joke. I could see working part time from home at 6 weeks as feasible, but if you can avoid it if say spend as much time as you can financially handle just with your lo!
