@camichael84 I always inject in my belly. In my last pregnancy I was a little nervous to inject in my belly since there is a baby right there! But the nurse assured me that I couldn't hurt anything. I just pinch some skin/fat about 2 inches to the left or right of my belly button and inject there. You could also do your thigh or upper arm. I just find my belly to be the easiest spot.
ETA: What dose did they start you out on? Don't be discouraged if it doesn't immediately help your numbers. It took some tweaking to get my dose right. And we've had to increase it a few times over the last 6 weeks.

@camichael84 I am glad you are glad They put my little brother on insulin and his fasting went from 490 to around 150 in like 2 days so I know its fast working stuff
@camichael84 - I've only ever injected myself during training classes, and never when pregnant - but found the stomach to be easiest. If you are able to pinch enough so that it's clearly longer than the needle you're using (perhaps 1/2 - 1 inch needle? Not sure what they gave you) then there's no concern whatsoever. Hope the insulin goes well, I'm sure it will, and will give you some peace of mind too
@sarafuss 15 units of slow acting-- they said that could be any time I want, but I'm going to start it tonight and do it in the evenings. Then 1 unit of fast acting for every 12 carbs I eat at meals. She also has me testing before meals now, so if my pre-meal numbers are above 110, I add a unit. If it's above 160 (hopefully that won't happen), I add two units. I believe I'll also being taking a unit or two after the meal if I have a high reading (1 unit over 110, 2 for over 160... she changed my testing time to 2 hrs after meal). She gave me a new monitor that will hook up to my smart phone with an app, I plug in the info they gave me, and it will tell me exactly how much and when to take the fast acting based on my sugar levels and carb intake.
Thanks for warning me about it maybe taking some time and tweaking. I definitely get discouraged when I don't see a good number, especially when I feel like I'm doing every thing I can.
That new meter sounds cool! I've never heard of that process for determining your fast acting dose per meal but that sounds like it will really help keep your numbers under control. I like that it's so specific.
I take 14 units of long-acting insulin (along with 4 units of fast-acting) with dinner and that has really helped my fasting numbers so I think taking the 15 units in the evening sounds like a good idea! Let us know how things are going after you start taking it!

@camichael84 I'm glad they gave you a solution that you can be comfortable with. I know it wasn't what you wanted! It sounds like a really great plan and so convenient to have the app connected to the monitor. I hope it gives you peace of mind and that it works quickly without needing to tweak too much. Just a couple more months of this!
The past 2 days my sugars have been the highest ever. I had Chinese food that I knew I shouldn't have and it was 150 after an hour and 120 at 2 hrs. But then today I totally stayed in the carb limit and my 1hr was just 140... I'm frustrated. My after dinner is usually around 110 so these are super high for me
I remember they told me that at a certain point Things get harder to control. Does anyone know when that is?
@Megan324 My diabetic nurse said usually around the 34-35 week mark, which is when your body usually requires triple the amount of insulin it normally would to process glucose. This happens to everyone, we just don't adapt as well with the GD because either our cells aren't as receptive to the insulin or we can't keep up that level of production of insulin.
@Megan324 oh no! I hope it was just a fluke or maybe less physical activity? Either way, are you seeing a higher number on your fasting one? That would be a good way to tell if it's what you're eating, something you're doing or if it's gettinf harder to control.
@AlwaysAuntNeverMom my fasting is still around 70-80 so that hasn't changed. So does that mean it's something I ate? I guess I have to be more careful.
Ok guys... getting frustrated. I was really, really hoping I could make it to the end without meds, but I'm feeling super defeated. My levels have been adequate all week. Not exactly where I'd like them to be but still within the limits my DN gave me. Tonight I made what I felt was a well balanced dinner: greek marinated chicken breasts (no skin), kale salad with cucumber and peppers with a dijon vinaigrette (no sugar added), green beans and asparagus and brown rice. Great portions. DH and I went for a half hour walk right after dinner rather than vegging in front of the tv. I tested about an hour and a half after our meal, and I was at 170 (Canadian 9.4). I felt like crying. I get how GD works, but I am just feeling defeated and overwhelmed.
@yellowrose314 I'm sorry you had a high read. Has this happened before or is it a one time thing? If it's a one time thing, try not to get too discouraged yet (I know that is hard). It could have been a random spike and not necessarily a sign that you'll need meds.
@yellowrose314 I know how you feel and it sucks but @camichael84 is right and try not to get too discouraged. If your other numbers are still on track than maybe it was a one time fluke! A bad number here or there isn't going to hurt your baby P.s. that Dinner sounds amazing, can you come cook for me?
@Megan324 I'm not sure but that is what the dietitian told me. I'm no doctor so hopefully your OB will have some encouraging answers. I wouldn't worry too much about high numbers after chinese food. It does get harder to deal with but you can also see higher insulin resistance at different times of the day.
@yellowrose314 PP are totally right. I know, for myself, that there was some trial and error the first couple of weeks. There were great, healthy meals that gave me higher numbers and crappy ones that gave me lower ones. I would do as others said and not worry too much until you see a trend upwards in all (or most) your numbers.
So my current insulin intake isn't bringing my sugar down much more than the Glyburide did, if at all.
@sarafuss@AnnaS930 It's not crazy to call now about that than to wait until my Friday check-in, right? With the Glyburide, I know it could take a couple days, but the insulin should be making a difference by now, I thought. Started the long-acting Friday night, and have been taking the fast acting since Saturday morning. I don't want to call in too soon, but I want something to work. It's been 3.5 weeks, and I haven't gotten my morning numbers under control at all during that time.
Also, you two were totally right about the injections. No pain at all, and even easier than the finger pricks.
@camichael84 my love tit is for support. I wouldn't think you're crazy to call already. I definitely would but I have no experience with insulin. I can understand the hopeless feeling and just wanting something to work already.
@camichael84 I would call and I don't think it's crazy! Even if they tell you to give it a few more days it's still good to let your dr. know what's going on.

Thanks, guys! They actually beat me to it, and called to check how it has been going! Missed their call, but called back and left a message. Feel good that they are going to help me stay on top of this!
@camichael84 - Go ahead and call. Insulin works, it's (as you know) what your body produces in response to glucose intake. Glyburide stimulate the release of insulin and also decreases the amount of glucose your liver makes - both of those processes take some time to fully show effect... whereas for the most part, insulin should work as soon as you start using it (with a good amount of dose adjustments often required at get-go).
All of this to say exactly what you already know, if the insulin isn't working now, it's unlikely that it will greatly increase its effect if nothing changes otherwise (dose, food intake, etc) over the week.
Reading shows they've already checked in. Glad you'll be getting in touch with them!!
I'm reading my response and having a Monday morning brain fart of "which effect/affect did I use and was it the right one?" The answer is no, probably not. I swear I'm much better with grammar when not on the Bump.

Stuck in quote box. I always have trouble with effect/affect. So I usually default to effect, and then decide someone can correct me if I'm wrong. I usually get grammer, but those two are hard. Haha.

I sat here saying, Ok I know which one is the verb and which is the noun.. now in "x" sentence, is it a verb or a noun?
One time during finals week I was writing a paper at 5am for my 8am class and I used effect and I couldn't remember if I used it correctly and I was so brain fried I started crying and just changed it to "influenced" or something LOL
