Baby Names

Minnie?

I was looking at popular names from the 1880s and DH and I both love Minnie for a baby girl.  Yes, it has a Minnie Mouse association but that doesn't bother me.  But I googled to see if there were other threads about it as a baby name and I saw a lot of comments where people were saying their daughters call their private parts "mini."  It seems like more of a British thing and I'm in the US, so I don't know how I feel about it.  Has anyone heard of "mini" being slang for a vagina?!  And, thoughts on the name in general?

Re: Minnie?

  • I have not heard of mini used as slang for vagina.

I don't like Minnie as a given name.  It's very nicknamey and not a name I'd want on my resume.

It is a common diminutive of
    Mary
    Wilhelmina
    Minerva
    Hermonie
    Winifred
    Amelia

  • My only association with this name is the mouse. I'd assume you were a Disney freak, but I wouldn't side-eye it.

  • I like it. I think Minnie is rather cute!

  • It's cute, but way too much of a nickname to me. Also i have never heard of it used as slang for vagina.

  • I've never heard it used as a NN for a vagina.

Its too Disney for me as a given name.  I like the suggestions above about using it as a NN for a formal name.

  • I've never heard that slang?

I think it's pretty nicknamey as a given and such a huge icon to use for a name for a person.  I do like it as a nn.Minnie Driver is Amelia

  • I think it's cute! It's in the same vein as Millie, Annie, Emmy... I think it can definitely stand on it's own.

    Congratulations!
  • Not good for a grown woman.
  • Cute on a little girl, ages terribly

  • Never heard of it as slang for a vagina. I definitely think mouse. But, it could work as a nn for another longer, better aging name. Also, I could see it as a point of teasing for example: mini boobs, or if she is overweight say she's "not so mini".

  • I know a baby Dottie, and a Millie, and Minnie is along that same vein. I do prefer Millie or Molly over Minnie, though, especially as a given name.
  • I would be really hesitant to use this as a stand-alone name.  It's such a cutesy, girlish sounding word.  It means "small!"

Imagine your daughter as a 25 year old law or business school graduate, sending her resume to law firms or corporations.

Minerva is a serious, old-fashioned name.  It's the Roman name for Athena, the goddess of wisdom!  Name her Minerva and call her Minnie when she's small.  If she wants a more serious name, she has Minerva to fall back on.  I suspect Minnie originated in this way anyway!

  • When we told FI's grandmother we were expecting, her first reaction was that if it was a girl, we had to name her Minnie Pearl... No family connection to the name at all, she just likes it. It mostly makes me think of Disney, nothing inappropriate, but I also don't know anything about British slang. If that reason would end up being awkward for you, like if you go there a lot or have family or friends there or anything like that, that would be the only reason I would avoid it.
  • I have several friends who refer to their child that looks like them as "mini," meaning their mini me.

I don't care for Minnie as a first name. It is too cutesy and Minnie Mouse to me. My advice is to look in the mirror and say, "Hi, I'm Minnie" a few times. See if it looks right on you and if you would be proud for it to be your name. I've done that for some of the more rare names we considered and we were able to weed out several names by how I felt saying the name to introduce myself.

Have you considered Mina (mean-uh)? That might get you the same nickname but with a more adult option.

I have never heard "mini" as a term for a vagina. I don't think you have to worry about that.

I do think Minnie is too cutesy to be a stand alone name. Here are some options that I think lend to the nickname Minnie:

    Mina
    Minerva
    Miranda
    Melinda
    Wilhelmina
    Anniversary

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • The only Minnie I know is in her 60's and it aged fine with her.
