Newborn stash

Hope this hasn't been brought up a ton of times. I have tried to search but of course it didn't work.

Just wonfering what what is a safe amount of CD for the newborn stage? There are so many different opinions online, I'm looking for some advice from a BTDT momma. I prefer to wash every other day.

I currently have:
12 infant prefolds
6 infant fitteds
3 thirsties xsmall cover
1bummis xsmall cover
5 WAHM newborn AIOs
1 Grovia AIO

Is this enough? Should I be getting more? I've never started at the newborn stage before. TIA

Generally 36+ changes for EOD washing is recommended.

I would add another dozen prefolds or a dozen flats and at least 1 more cover like a Thirsties duo size 1.

  • I also wash every other day, and my newborn stash was:

    24 GMD newborn prefolds
    3 GMD newborn workhorse diapers
    12 GMD clotheeze doublers
    9 GMD hemp doublers
5 Blueberry Capri size 1 covers
1 Babee Greens size 1 wool cover
1 Disana wool pull-on newborn cover

24 prefolds was more than enough for us, and DS pooped 8-10 times per day at first. Next time around I would definitely get more hemp doublers though, like 12 more. And more of the Babee Greens. But overall this supply worked very well for us, and we never ran out.

  • I would grab another 12 prefolds and a few more covers. I had 24 prefolds in my nb stash along with 6-8 covers. I also had some pockets and AI1s in my stash as well that started working when my DS was 10 lbs.

I definitely overbought on covers, but I was curious @ladylolly89 with the babee greens, what kind of clothing do you wear over those?  I got a couple thick pullon wools for ON, a couple under woolies, and one size 1 longie, I felt like more for around the house or road trips.  But I was holding off on the babeegreens bc I felt like they don't necessarily double as clothing, kwim?  Thoughts?

@BusinessWife  I just use the Babee Greens under normal clothing during the day, or on their own on hotter nights. The longer/more they are used, the more leakproof they become. Not quite as leakproof as the Disana pull-on (so far) but they do the job. And so soft and comfy! They are super cute around the house with just a t-shirt/bodysuit though. They look less bulky under clothing than my other diaper covers. Not quite as reliable as the Blueberrys and Disana when it comes to runny newborn poop, but no blowouts yet (DS is 13 weeks).

Congratulations on your little bundle!  :D @ladylolly89

I mostly have thirsties duo size 1s and blueberry capri size 1s, too!  as well as a set of sweetpea aios, (more for caregiver friends/family/DH,) plus a couple sloomb covers from ebay for overnight.  I'm hoping I can get away with just the geffen prefolds plus a quick absorber with the wool cover overnight, or do you think it's worth getting a few overnight fitteds, too?

We have some GMD fitteds to wear under wool for overnight. DS sleeps in a fitted with an extra hemp or fleece doubler, a Disana pull-on, and a t-shirt. The fitteds certainly aren't necessary, but it's nice to not have to fold a prefold at night when all you want to do is go back to bed, and they are a little more reliable when it comes to possible blowouts. A blowout shouldn't escape from a wool pull-on anyway, but it saves a wash. (You probably are already aware that wool very rarely needs to be washed unless it's poopy!)
  • Has anyone tried the Sweet Pea Newborn AIOs or the new style GrowVia ones?  I have several of the Sweetpeas, but I read a review that said the laundry tabs don't stay stuck in the wash and causes them all to stick together.  I am thinking about adding some Growvia ones with the snaps, to give a slightly different fit option, as well as a non-aplix option if it turns out I am sad and the sweetpeas just get destroyed in the wash.

Did anyone have this problem washing the sweetpeas?
Any opinions about having two different newborn AIOs, or better just to pick one style and stick with it?
  • I have 4 different types of newborn AIOs. From everything I've read I wouldn't stock up on one kind. They all work better at different stages. I have a few Grovia newborns(the hemp/cotton ones, apparently they work the best), little Joeys, thirties and then  some WAHM ones. I also have a bunch of prefolds because they are pretty much an one size fits all.

  • Hmm, well I hope I'll be okay.  I have 20 of the sweetpeas, cos I figured it's silly to only have a few, if they are meant for a stage.  I did get 4 of the totsbots tinyfit, too to try, and I was thinking maybe 12 of those if they look like they're going to be good.  I heard mixed things about the V4s so I want to see for myself.

Then I have 32 (eventually 36) nb prefolds, 24 small prefolds, and 4 bluberry capri size 1s, 8 thirsties duo size 1s, and 7 (maybe up to 12) of the sweetpea covers.  They are super stretchy, and also seem smaller than the thirsties and blueberry ones, so I'm thinking those may be the first covers, since I have heard some babies don't fit the thirsties size 1s right away.

You think I should be okay?

I think you have plenty! And Blueberry Capris are super adjustable and fit my under-7-lb DS on the smallest setting. They can go nice and low for that cord stump.

I think we had 12 newborn thx's and would do laundry every other day. I was washing a lot of spit rags & Jammies anyway. :)
  • I have since tweaked my nb stash to include 4 sweetpea covers, 6 thirsties duo size 1s, 2 size 1 capris, 32 nb prefolds, 6 hemp doublers, 6 bamboozle fitteds, plus 24 aios.  I feel much better about the balance now, realizing all those aios are just a total bonus! ;)
