What are you doing for daycare ?

Hi Ladies!

I did a quick search and didn't see anything on the topic.  I am currently in a day care search frenzy-- all of our local daycares are on a 18month-3 year wait list... I can not believe it!

What are you doing for day care?

Is there a wait?

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time?

We are using a center where I used to work.

There is a waiting list, but we already have a spot.

$188/week for full time infant care (we will not use all of this, obviously, but they are open 6-6. Most days, baby will be there from around 7-3:30. He will also not go in the summer while I'm off.) The price will go down when he moves to the 2 year old room.

Edited to add: There is typically a wait here as well; we are just very lucky that the manager of the place we chose is a close family friend.

  • I'm a SAHM, but for preschool (later much later) there is similar difficulties. My kids qualify for a speech pathology program through our local ISD. If you have a chance check out care.com and see if you can't find a nanny if you are in a pinch.

Around here the wait time is something like 2 years. Which means there are ladies who are literally just turning HPT trying to get a spot. Its insanity.

    Nope!

$200/week for three kids until DD is three. It's about 20 hours/week (4-5 day).

DD was in daycare until recently. We paid $320/week for full time care and there wasn't a waiting period. I loved everything about it except
the sick policy. She was always sick and we had to pay regardless if she was there.

  • Day care wait lists are insane where I am, too.  I'm a stay-at-home mom, but we don't have family or friends nearby, so we were looking at putting our toddler into day care for 2-3 days a week.  We were told by more than one day care that you need to interview while you're pregnant (and the sooner in the pregnancy the better) to even be considered.  And those day cares don't take babies under 1.  So we ended up just waiting for preschool, which will start right around my due date with our second.

I know this isn't an option for most people, so one suggestion - have you considered a nanny share?  You can try to find another family who also needs a nanny and find a nanny willing to care for multiple kids at once.  Around here, having one child with a nanny is usually $15-20 an hour, and two kids is $20-25.  That way, each family pays less and you don't have to worry about finding a day care.
  • We locked in our daycare of choice after being on probably 5 daycare wait lists.  Our top choice got approved for licensing at a 2nd location, so she had spots available.  Otherwise there would have been a wait of a year to 3 years.  INSANE really.

What i've noticed is that most daycares will say: "we really won't know until much later if we'll have a spot, so call us when you have given birth."  (I think that's insane, by the way).

We are going to be paying $295/week for full time infant care.
  • Oh, wow, you guys.  I think we might need to move.  The day care we were looking at is $1,190 a month (so about $440 a week) for full time care.
  • What are you doing for day care? Daycare

Is there a wait? No- we went and found a daycare during late 1st tri, early 2nd so none of the places we looked at had a waiting list yet.

How much is your weekly day care? ours is broken down monthly at $1075/mo which includes table food for lunches when she's a little older, daily email updates etc. It does not include diapers, formula and things like that.

OMG I'm so happy we have my DH Mom and my niece to watch our little guy, day care prices in CT are in INSANE. Then again EVERYTHING in CT is so expensive. I can't wait to move. But when he's around 2, we will send him for a few days a week, to start some early education and socialization.

We signed DS1 up for a center after a ton of visits and research. But the week before I went back to work we switched and decided on a small home daycare. And it's been great. He loves his daycare provider and her kids. We pay $325 a week- come September we will pay $325 a week and then $77 on top of that for 2 half days of preschool. When DS2 gets here we will pay $400 for both kids and then the $77 for preschool. daycare will bring DS1 to and from preschool for us.

She isn't licensed so we can't claim her on taxes but the cost is so much cheaper than any center around and while we live pay check to paycheck we are still in a high tax bracket and phase out of a good credit.

i was very against going unlicensed... But we know her well and she takes amazing care of our son. And it's only him and another boy there half the week. So she's not overloaded with kids. A lot of his good behavior and his nap scheduling I credit to her.

Edit- the center we picked was a little over $500 a week. Which is pretty standard here. It was a middle ground price if you will. One other place was much higher and another option was like in the $400 hundreds.
  • I literally just called our prospective daycare bc you guys give me anxiety and theres no waiting list aaaand our friends daughter goes there and they already told them we would be calling so amen hallelujah.

its cheaper than most daycares (NJ) and is 205 a week for full time infant :) I feel so relaxed now.

  • We are hoping that during my last semester in school, hubby can use parental leave to cover us 2 days a week. He deliberately switched his RDO (regular day off) to Tuesday to cover one day of school (I'll have two school days and one clinical day). He gets up to six months of parental leave in the first year, but it comes out of his PTO. He's working to build up his PTO for when baby comes.

After I'm done with school, he'll switch back to shift work, which is two 24 hour shifts per week, and I'll be working three 12's a week. We will try to manage it so we don't need care, but we may need to hire a part time nanny. We just don't know at this point. His parents just moved 600 miles away, so they're no help on that front.

  • We're still trying to figure it out.  We've been looking since March and we're still just wait listed. A lot of places have said they won't have spots until next spring or summer.  The places we're looking at are about $315/week full-time or $225/week part-time.  I work Tuesday through Saturday and want to start taking Fridays off after baby is born.  Our area is generally a pretty low cost of living so these prices and limited options were surprising.  I think we'll have to go with an in-home provider until we get into a daycare, but I haven't found any I like.  And a lot of them say they won't know if they'll have availability in January until right before.  So stressful!  A lot of the in-homes are around $180-225/week for full-time.  I'm definitely freaking out about this and I really hate this process.  I've always wanted to be a SAHM, but I want to keep my career going and need the income, so that makes it extra hard to not have the perfect childcare situation planned out.

  • For the places I'm looking at, not sure if I'll need it, we are looking at around 300+/week for full time or 185 for for 3 part time days.

I'm really hoping to avoid daycare the 1st year since I work from home,  we'll see.

What are you doing for day care? We'll be home until January, then she'll come to work with me until August of 2017, then she'll go into daycare at the church where DH works.

Is there a wait? No, but they follow the school year, so you can't put them into the program until August. Well, you can, but you have to start paying in August and we felt like it was a waste of money to start paying for daycare this August (before she's even born!).

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time? $115 a week (with his employee discount) for full time care.

We were lucky and were able to get a spot at a new Primrose location that was not yet open when we toured it, for a January start (we secured this spot around 8 weeks pregnant). Weekly tuition there will be $375. We are also still on 2 other waiting lists that we have been on since 7 weeks, that we like just as much, but are a little less expensive at $320 & $290 per week. Around here most daycares have a waiting list of 1 year to 18 months for infant care.
  • I have applications put in for LO and for baby on the way at our local early headstart.

There IS a waiting list, but applications are accepted on a need-basis, and this program takes into consideration many aspects of your schedule AND personal life, because it also incorporates Family Involvement and Growth counseling into the early headstart program. It's pretty great, and I think worth the wait, because it not only focuses on truly developing children's skills, creativity, and personalities, but encourages and almost forces an active and involved homelife, which is extremely beneficial during child development.

    Part time 8-12 is FREE.
    3/4 time 8-2 is $25/week.
    Full time is $50/week.

Keep in mind, this is a low income program.

  • Wow, I must just live in a more expensive day care area, too! We just signed DS1 up for a Mother's Day Out program at a local church (where a lot of his friends go) so that I will have a couple of mornings to just deal with the newborns and he will have a break from baby-land. I probably called 8 places in the last 2 months before finding an open spot; everywhere had wait lists or only availabilites in full-time care. Anyway, full-time care runs about $1600/mo for 18mos, and goes up from there.
  • For those with toddlers, I recommend checking out the YMCA for part time care. It's wayyyyyyyyy cheaper and here the teachers are amazing. Also, check out churches. We discovered that those were cheaper than a facility and didn't have a religious influence for the child care center.

  • I've been contacting a few in home day cares and many are saying they won't have an opening for Sept 2017 (when I go back to work) or they won't do a waiting list because the rely on a full house so if someone leaves they try to fill the spot right away.  If I let myself think about it, I freak out because I know it can be a serious challenge, but I have to assume it will work out.

Most places around where I live are $200 - $250 a week, but I'll have summers off so that works nicely.

  • What are you doing for day care? My mom will come to our house and watch our baby.

Is there a wait? No - she keeps trying to come over here before the baby's even here ;-)

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time? Sort-of free. We need to pay her something - at least to compensate her for gas to travel! But she makes it hard to give her anything.

That sounds super-ideal, but we will need to start looking into daycares. I'm willing to take advantage of my mom to keep my wee tiny baby out of a daycare, but don't want to keep on doing so. I'm hoping to transition into a daycare a few days a week when the kid is one or so. There's just so much other planning I haven't really looked into it so far.

What are you doing for day care? Baby B will stay home with me until January while I am on leave.  When I go back to work, he will be staying at an in-home daycare that a family friend has and it will be him and an 18 month old boy. After he turns 1, he will be at a church preschool.

Is there a wait? Not for the family friend, but the daycares and other in-homes I looked at before there was a waitlist and nobody knew if/when they would have an opening! We don't have a lot of good options around here.  The church preschool has a list but we are #2 and should be in by fall 2017.

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time?  It's $30 a day for the in-home, and we won't pay if we aren't there. She is perfectly fine if my mom or MIL wants to watch the baby one day or even for a week. Once he gets to the church preschool, it's $195 a week for 5 days a week no matter if he is there or not. He will be going 7:30-5 M-F to both (except for holidays of course when we are off.)

  • @RainMira9e that's my plan too! I feel little guilty when I see all these waiting lists and costs, but I only work 3 hours a day. My husband and I have repeatedly tried to pay her (at least for gas) but she won't take anything. For whatever reason, when my mom was a single mother of 4, my grandmother wouldn't watch us when she worked so she has completely became the opposite where sometimes she puts her own life on hold for us (well not me but my older sister and her now 8 year old that have lived with her almost his whole life and my sister works 2 jobs so my mom basically non stop watches my nephew).

I I really appreciate it though, so my way of paying her back is by never asking her to repay when she 'borrows' money. Like we all went to Disney last summer and I put the rental car and hotel on my credit cards and then the people who were going were paying me their share, she is forgetful so didn't but I never asked her for it. Hopefully it evens out in the end.
  • We just secured a spot in a daycare last week, starting in April 2017.  They said they have just one other spot available and only one in March, and are quickly filling up for the rest of the year, so we got in at a good time.  It is $1500/month for full time, they are open 7-6.  The prices go down a bit when the kids get to preschool age.  I am in an expensive area (Los Angeles).  Glad to have this very important thing ticked off the to-do list!
  • I don't have a wait list however Noth my other two have attended same daycare and.our baby won't be daily our child care system has a rule of one and walking for registered daycare.  It's usually 32.00 a day but we are able to get assignee we pay 0 for our 3 year old due to hearing loss

What are you doing for day care?

The little guy will be going to the daycare my nephew used to go to and niece goes to now. My sister has used them for the last 5 years so I already know most of them there anyways.

    Is there a wait?

No because we signed him up already to hold his spot.

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time?

Weekly daycare is $1400 but because my sister gets a discount from her job and the daycare owners know me, they gave me her corporate discount so it's $905 a month instead. (Thank goodness they gave us the discount!) We will be using them starting in January and it will be full time. Not ideal because I'd rather be home with him or my husband, who wants to be a stay at home Dad, but we can't afford for either of us to stay home. He will get dropped off at about 7am by either one of us (probably my husband) and then picked up by me by 3:45/4 right after work. Any days my school is closed, I'm not sending him either.

What are you doing for daycare? Crying every time I have to think about it (expense wise). Especially with 2. Where I live, daycare costs a small fortune. In addition to the regular costs of living (average home prices for a 3b SFH is about $600k). About 75% of my salary will be going to Daycare... it's creating a real argument for me becoming a SAHM. A couple hundred bucks a month extra isn't necessarily worth it to us.

Is there a wait? Yup. I'm in the process of actually looking for early start Preschools for my 19m old, because currently the only way to guarantee a spot for my baby girl is to take her big brothers daycare spot. Preschool here isn't cheap either. It's a bit cheaper than daycare but not much. But we're also on a wait list for a 2nd spot at our daycare.

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time? My son goes 3 days a week from 9 AM - 530 PM and we pay $980/month and he's with my mom the other two days. Sadly she wont be able to watch both kids so we'll either have to do both full time in daycare, or one full time in daycare and one part time with my mom watching part time. It's $80/day, so if he's there 5 days a week it's $400/week or about $1200/month. And no discounts for siblings, so I'm looking at anywhere from roughly $2200 - $2400/month. If we move him to preschool, it's going to be closer to $1700 - $2100/month.

Me too! I just need to figure out how lol. Lotto tickets are sounding really appealing right about now. Daycare will be about as much as our mortgage. I mean, my husband makes good money but I like having extra money too. It doesn't help that I live in freaking suburbia/pleasantville, and I'm fairly certain 90% of the women here are SAHM's. So I can't even ask my neighbors what their secret is to affording both lol.

  • Panicking. We've looked into a few around here, but they all close at 6p and that's not feasible with our work schedules. The ones that stay open later obviously cost extra per day, which adds to the already expensive costs of full time daycare. We thought having DH switch shifts would make things easier because LO would have to spend less time in daycare, but now it seems impossible to find one that will work.
  • @nsquaredlife13... Haha. When DH and I were reviewing daycare costs we determined that someone needs to start making millions vs our current salaries STAT. It's ridiculous
  • I work about 45-50 minutes from home. All of the ones where we live are completely full.  So some of the nurses suggested I call some by the hospital where I work, and what do you know--they all have availability.  I went to one yesterday and it was fine-but then again I have nothing to compare to.

Today I have to go on 2 more tours and pay for a week of day care in order to be on the wait list (for the ones by my house).  We might use the one by my work until one near home opens by.  Its just not ideal because of traffic and crazy drivers, oh and having a baby in the car for an hour while I'm driving and hoping he doesn't have a daily freak out...

The one by my work lets you alternate between full time and part time if needed--they just ask that you let them know the week before and you can pay weekly or monthly.  The one by the hospital is $198/ week for full time...and the ones where we live are $300/ week for full time... crazy difference from us living in the city to me working in a more rural area..
  • What are you doing for day care? My job has a subsidized childcare center, which I am SO grateful for. It's right on the campus where I work and goes up until kindergarten and we get an employee subsidy so it's like 40% off. I have no idea what we would do otherwise.

Is there a wait? There is, but we have a spot. We filled the last spot in the newborn room so they can't enroll anyone else until June 2017.

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time? Our plan is to send the baby 3 days a week, full day, if H keeps the same work schedule. It'll be about $600 per month with my employee subsidy.

  • What are you doing for day care?  Thankfully husband works nights, so baby will stay home until mobile - or drops an additional nap, with our first this was around 10 months. Then he'll go to the same facility big brother will be going to - it's a learning center associated with the hospital my husband works at.

Is there a wait?  Our center said they would need 1 week notice since another one of our children will be attending.

How much is your weekly day care? Full time? Part time? For baby number 2 - Full time for an infant through first year would be $152.00 per week but with a sibling there it will be $125.00 not including cost of care for our 3 year old.

  • What are you doing for day care?  We plan on using the military's child development center.  There are a few at my husband's base and a few at mine, I think we're going to try and go with my husband's base because he will have a little more stable schedule.
Is there a wait? I'm checking with them again soon, because we were told that since we are both active duty we have priority, so they suggested not putting LO on the list until October, so she can start in Jan/Feb when my maternity leave is up.  I just worry that the woman I talked to was wrong about the waiting list and we'll be left having to pay DC prices for child care until I can get her into the military's center.
How much is your weekly care?  I can't find the exact prices because she wouldn't give out that information until we actually applied, but it's based on your income and subsidized by the military, so the best estimate for full time I can find is 200-250/week.

  • Baby will be going to the same daycare DS is at. We got very lucky because, like you, everywhere had a long wait list. I felt pretty strongly I wanted him in a small group setting (not center based) so started looking on the county website for accredited in home daycares. I called a few and spoke with a few friends. By word of mouth I found the one we use and she happened to have an opening. It has been the best thing (other than if I was able to stay home). She has 4-7 kids, is like a surrogate mom to him and they go on hikes and field trips. He loves it there and is eager to bring his sibling. Best wishes.

  • Wow. I feel so country reading all these responses. We live in a pretty rural area, so "daycare" isn't a big thing.

Like most kids here, DD goes to a sitter who watches children in her home. She charges $25/day, and DD usually goes three days/week (my husband works a rotating, 12-hour shift so he's normally home two weekdays). DS will go to the same place when I go back to work ... Luckily, DD starts kindergarten in August (and grandpa will be helping with before/after school care for her), so my budget will remain pretty much the same unless school is cancelled.
