Ivy and Oliver

So I'm not due until March but DH and I have been arguing about baby names for the 7 years we've known each other so I figure we better start early. Part of it is him teasing me, but part is that he likes really out there names, like ones he made up, and I like traditional. The only two we both like are Ivy and Oliver. He is concerned that Oliver is too popular. And I like Ivy, but am worried it's too out there. So what are your thoughts? How many do you know in real life? How trendy are they? Middle name suggestions? Our last name is one syllable and starts with an H. Thanks!

I think they are both solid choices. Oliver has gained some usage but it has history of usage and so it isn't trendy. I also love the nn Ollie.

I've known two little girls named Ivy (in 30 years), and I don't think it's 'out there.'

With a 3 syllable first name, you're pretty much WIDE OPEN for middle names as long as they are too lengthy. Good luck!

I definitely don't think Ivy is "out there". It's a nice name.

Oliver is NMS and is gaining popularity but is a solid choice.

I really like Ivy Ann. Almost every girl in my family and my DH's family has Ann as a middle name, including his mom who has passed away. Thanks for the input everyone!

I like both names and think of Ivy as a normal name. Not "out there" at all. I taught kindergarten for four years and had one student with each of those names. Both kids were totally adorable, so I have a positive association.

I agree with PPs that Ivy is not an "out there" name. I graduated with a girl who had that name. I think it's not popular but very pretty and normal.

Oliver is gaining in popularity but it's not a super common name. I think they are both great.

There is a cute little Ivy in my sons daycare class. She is 3. I think it's a great name and not out there. I don't know any Oliver's. I love Ollie as a nn. I think they are great choices.

Both are great names ! I have an Ivy and we get compliments on it often. She's the only Ivy I know and I know two little boys named oliver.

I know 1 Oliver IRL.
And Ivy does not seem out there at all. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can find it on most souvenir options. In my world, if you can buy it somewhere without having to special order it, then it's pretty mainstream.

Oliver is super trendy in the Midwest right now. I know of 7 born in the last 12 months...but it's a great name. I hate the nn Ollie. Yikes. Lol

Sorry bumping old post but just had to comment. My DD#1 is Ivy Grace and my DS is Oliver Graham. We have only ever met one other Ivy. Love the name since everyone can pronounce it and it is classic. Oliver is more popular then before and we have met quite a few other Olivers. I also have a Lucy Mae too. Love classic names. Can't go wrong!

I know quite a few Olivers, but I do like it. I absolutely LOVE Ivy and would've considered it seriously if I had a girl. I don't think it's too "out there" at all, although my DH did.

Ivy is pretty popular where I live (I'm not in the US), number 19 for girls last year. I love it though. It's on our list but will probably be pipped by one of our other girls names I think. Oliver was number 1 for boys last year so is super popular but I only know one so far. Both great names though!

Oliver is popular, but still a good name. I personally wouldn't have a problem using it. The only Olivers I know of are on TV and in books, but it may be more popular in your region. I think Ivy is a perfect balance of recognizable but not too common as far I've seen- definitely not too out there!

Before I noticed that this was an old thread, I was going to say that I used to love Oliver, but now all I can hear is "liver" and it's been taken off our (short) boy name list.

Both beautiful! IVy doesn't strike me as "out there" at all. It's a simple old fashioned name to me like Iris or Hattie. In my opinion Olivernis really popular. For good reason but that's the main reason Inwouldnt use it although I have had it on and off my list a few times!
