Burping

are you guys still burping your LO? I almost always burp her but lately, when she falls asleep while feeding, I'll sit her upright to burp and she's instantly wide awake. It'll then take me at least 40 minutes to get her back to sleep.

Re: Burping

  • I was JUST talking about this with my husband not even an hour ago. I'm curious too. Someone told me at 6 months they can burp on their own but I'm not brave enough to try. Id feel horrible if she got bad gas pains.

  • I still burp!! My LO still has horrible reflux (which I'm also told 6 mo should be some miracle Turing point) but if I don't he's a faucet of spit up. Except for the night time feed. We still do a bottle with night time routine and I let him drink the whole bottle then attempt to burp him for 5 minutes before laying down. If he doesn't burp he doesn't burp and it doesn't seem to be impacting his night sleep at all
  • I usually do, but tonight LO fell asleep drinking his bottle and I was afraid it would wake him up too much if I sat him up to burp him! No issues yet
  • @cali1710 I'm also not brave enough to try it. I'm scared of giving her another reason of waking up in the middle of the night. But she falls asleep quickly with her night time bottle so it's so tempting!

@amberjinnett poor little guy! Hopefully things get better for him soon. For our nighttime feed she only gets about 2 1/2 oz so I don't even attempt to burp her anymore. I'm trying to wean her off of that feeding but it's not going well lol

@mestokes let me know how he does through the night!
  • If it's right before a nap or during the night, I don't burp. It only wakes her up. She seems completely fine without being burped. Im the opposite of you guys, I'm not brave enough to try burping when shes falling asleep/is asleep for fear of getting her all wide awake again.

I just googled this today. I've been burping consistently during the day and skipping it of it's a middle of the night feed. I've noticed that as she sits up more it just happens on its own. I might let up on burping a bit more once she can sit completely on her own.

I am guilty of not burping a lot... usually after I feed him I sit him up for a min or two on my lap, he usually burps right away if he needs too. Sometimes he doesn't. I will give him a few pats on his back sometimes too.

The other day he was laying on the floor on his belly and let out this huge burp I heard it from the other room it was hilarious.

If he falls asleep eating there's no way I burp him haha if he wakes up within the hour I usually will pick him back up and burp!
  • @amberjinnett I was also told 6 months turning point... I'm hoping for a miracle. Today I literally feel like I need a full wet suit the spitting up is so bad!!
  • @ekscopp fingers crossed for the both of us! We had a couple really good days and I was like hallelujah we made it!! Then he had a bad flare up and had blood in it again. Even though the pedi GI said its normal and not of concern, it makes my anxiety go through the roof! Ready for it to be outgrown already. Save my mental health and water bill from so much laundry! Haha
  • I've kinda stopped.. If he's awake he will burp on his own. When he's asleep I just leave him be.

@JanuarysBaby1 he ended up waking up after 30 minutes crying really loudly so I guess I should have burped him :/ after that he slept okay!
  • @mestokes oh no! maybe burping before bed is best? It's so risky though lol
  • I always burp, especially before bed because I don't want her to be uncomfortable with trapped gas preventing her sleep. She's always been really gassy though. I won't stop anytime soon. Usually just moving around help her gets it out.
  • I burp 2x at every bottle.  3/4 of the way through and then right at the end. He gets a 6 oz. bottle and I'll burp at 4 oz, then at 2.  He gives us a burp each time and even though he burps on his own, generally when he rolls over onto his belly shortly after his feeding, I still feel better doing it.  With all of the stomach issues we've had and still have on occasion, I'll probably continue burping him for the next few months.
