Sibling gift

We have a 3yo son and I was thinking I'd like to have a sibling gift that we can give to him when he comes to visit the new baby in the hospital.  Is anyone else doing this?  Any ideas or suggestions?  I thought it would be nice to do something special for our son since there will be so much attention and focus on the new baby.

When my younger brother was born (we were 3 yrs apart as well), my parents gave me a care bear stuffed animal, and I still remember that 30+ years later.

Re: Sibling gift

  • I'm doing it for DD.  I got her a bunch of stuff and I'm going to put it all in a Big Sis bag.  So far I have a bracelet, a few clothing items that say big sister, coloring book/crayons, Look and Find book, big sis tumbler type cup with her name, a few puzzles, small Frozen board books and some other little toys.  Pinterest has a lot of good ideas and I bought a bunch of the stuff I already got from Etsy.

  • I'm probably going to do both.  We'll get DD a gift from her little brother and also let her pick out a gift from her to her little brother.  She has also requested birthday cake, lol.  So we'll order a cake while we're in the hospital to pick up when we get home to celebrate his birthday.
  • Great idea! This is also my first memory. When my brother was born (we are 2 years apart) I remember getting a Barbie from him hahah. I'll never forget it!
  • I'm going to make DS a little bag of gifts to give him in the hospital - mostly stuff that will help distract him when we bring the baby home and I'm preoccupied. We also ordered a baby doll for him to start taking care of before LO comes (someone told me this can get them into the "older helper" mindset). DH wants to get him a fish too, he's obsessed with Finding Nemo, and we don't have any pets, so I think it's a good compromise.

  • I purchased a necklace from Etsy for DD it has three charms. A crown, a circle with Big sister K**** and the last one says you will always be mommy's first baby girl. She is 6 and into jewelry so I know she will love it. I am also going to get her a new toy that she has been wanting.
  • @Bookhousegirl and @SkiChic626    I've been plotting a "busy bag" for DD as well for when I'm occupied with baby. Great idea of having baby give it to her at their first meeting!! Maybe it will soften the blow of taking away her only child status.

I need to go scope out Pinterest now.

I bought DS several Cars toys. He's just over 2 years old, and he really likes the movie. I plan to give him one in the hospital and some of the others when friends come to visit. That way he won't feel left out.

@Pepper6 - I love the cake idea!  We might try that too!
  • I have a new toy set aside for my 2.5yo DS for a big brother gift, but you all are making me feel like I need to get him more. My wheels are turning. Maybe I'll have to head over to Pinterest too!

  • I'm planning to do a build a bear date with my 2.5 yr old DS, we want to let him make one and give it to him from the baby, and have him make one for the baby to bring to the hospital.

  • My three year old daughter has been "pregnant" the whole time with me.  I am getting her a new boy baby doll since she has determined she is giving birth to a baby Jack as well.

i'll probably get my 19 month old son a doll too.  He likes dolls simply bc his sister plays with him and we can practice being sweet to his brother.
  • I'm going to leave a gift (paw patrol toy) for him when we leave for the hospital from me since I'm leaving him for 3 days. But then I'm getting him a toy truck from the baby that I'll give him at the hospital. When I asked him what he wants to teach the baby he said "to play with trucks" then told me that we needed a toy cement mixer. So that's what we'll give him from the baby.
  • Great ideas!  I didn't think about doing a bag, that might be easier to find a few smaller items.  I also like the idea of build a bear, we haven't done that yet so that could be special.

We just celebrated DSs 3rd bday so he has received so many new toys lately!
  • I am making sure to have a gift for dd, from the baby, each day she comes to visit at the hospital.  I'm not sure exactly what at this point but probably something small for each day.
  • @tinkerbell11210 can you link the etsy listing you ordered the sister necklace from?
  • Yes, we are doing the sibling gift exchange too. I used to think it was kind of a silly idea, but I keep hearing from different families how meaningful it is for the older sibling. My 3.5 year old DD has become obsessed with Peppa Pig and is getting a Peppa doll and book from her new baby brother (I also love how Peppa is an older sister/younger brother family just like ours). She is giving her baby brother a bear she made at Build a Bear and a birthday card she made for him at a an older sibling class she attended.

  • @DDRRT1982 where did you find a boy baby doll?? Toys R Us had 2 aisles of dolls... All girls. I'll probably just order one on Amazon, but I was hoping to find one in a store so I could make sure it didn't have a creepy face or something  :#

  • Silly question,  but would you do sibling gifts for BIG siblings, like 6 and 11 year olds?
  • Question, is anyone doing anything special for DH? It's our first baby so I was thinking doing something would be cute to commemorate.
  • @Bookhousegirl this is the boy doll my MIL got for DS. (Then the dog chewed his head and we had to get a replacement.) We looked around at stores and the only boy "dolls" were characters from movies.

  • @ShanRum3 I was trying to decide this as well, but DS (11) made the comment that he needed to ask for stuff before the baby gets here and we forget about him..ouch. He was joking, but since then we decided to put together a big brother bag with some things like iTunes cards and maybe a board game--he loves those and I want something we can do with the baby around so he doesn't feel too left out.
  • We got DS a toy he's been eyeing for a while. He's really into matchbox cars and so we got him a trailer truck that can carry/pull a bunch of matchbox cars. We might get him a couple cars to put with it. That's it.

He picked out a little stuffed animal for baby girl.

  • @Bookhousegirl I got my 2.5yo DS this little boy doll in his Easter basket:

I don't find the face creepy at all. It's smaller than a lot of baby dolls and has a soft body so it's the perfect size for him to carry around, cuddle, and practice being gentle with.

I may try to get him a box of cigars!!
  • My baby brother (2 years younger) "gave" me a cabbage patch doll (a cloth one with a real butt signature!) when he was born, and it's always been very special to me.  DD is 21 months and SUPER into Elmo, so I was thinking that baby brother will give her an Elmo stuffed toy.  Haven't thought about the other small gifts to help keep her occupied -- great ideas!  Scooting over to Pinterest now...

  • Thanks @ashleybaker712 & @tisunge602! I was looking at the Corelle one on Amazon, so I'll go with that one. I want something kind of realistic, but not one of those creepy "real life baby" dolls (can you tell I have a slight fear of dolls lol). Glad to hear this is a good one!

  • @cal031686 I'm with you!  Once he does the pushing, he can get a gift :)

  • i was thinking if we have a boy to get him a nice watch with the name and date engraved in the back then one day he can pass it down
  • my oldest was 2.5 when the next child was born. He had been asking for Mavis (one of the trains from Thomas and Friends) for a while, and we kept telling him he had to wait because his baby brother was going to bring it for him. He was so excited to get a long sought after toy from his new brother. He also brought a teddy bear for the baby.

Now my boys are 8 and almost 6. I don't see any need to get them anything. They will get to spend 4 days with Grandma and that is enough for them. They love going over to her place.

  • @ShanRum3 Yes, definitely!  I don't have older kids, but I don't see why not!

And, no, to getting DH something lol.  I know he's getting me a "push" present, but I wasn't planning to get him anything.  He's not the one growing a baby and getting sliced.

Oh man, I haven't looked yet.  Maybe I need to get on that.
  • I'm getting something for our 5 year old.  I found a big sis canvas bag with her name on it on Etsy.  Also got her a floral robe similar to the one I'll wear in the hospital.  There was this stuffed bunny at buy buy baby I bought for her because she didn't want to let it go when we were there a few weeks ago.  I went back to get it to put in the bag.  Also found some really cute books about being a big sis, little mommy and growing up.  I actually found them at buy buy baby and was reading through them and started crying like the emotional preggo I am lol.  Plan on putting a few more things in there that she'll enjoy.  She also starts kindergarten right around the time baby is due so want to make sure this important time in her life isn't forgotten.
  • I'm thinking about getting my boys Big Brother shirts or something along those lines. I'm not sure yet.
  • DD will only be 16 months, but we did get her another baby doll (she has a soft plush one but this one has the plastic head). She came with a stroller and then I got the crib, car seat, bouncer, and baby carrier. She loves pushing carts and loves her baby doll she has now. I'm thinking about getting her some books too to be read at the hospital.
  • I feel kind of silly asking & I know it doesn't really matter but we want want to get DD, who just turned 2, a doll from her baby brother and for it to be from him when he is born. Would you get her a boy doll to represent her brother or just a regular girl doll? I am thinking way to much about this...haha

  • So, I've found a few books for DS2, (he's 6) and I'm going to make them each a shirt. I found a few cool ideas on Pinterest. I'm struggling with what to do for DS1 (he's 11) I hate to encourage his video gaming any more than he already plays, so gift cards for Steam, itunes, and the like are out... HELP!!! I thought about some sort of survival kit, but I'm drawing a blank on what to put in it. Should I do something funny like a diaper changing kit, (not that he'll be changing diapers) or some other type of kit where there are items he can use to help Mom and Dad out with his new little brother?
  • I ended up taking DS to build-a-bear and we let him make an animal for himself and for the baby.  He had never done that (he's 3), so he was pretty excited.  He's planning to bring the baby's animal to the hospital, so that will be fun for him.  I also put together a small bag with a few things for him to do if he decides to hang out at the hospital - I just got a couple of activities from the $ bin at target.
