Nursery Thread: Ideas/Themes/General Planning!

Re: Nursery Thread: Ideas/Themes/General Planning!

  • With DD we did a neutral room inspired by nature and mid-century decor with pops of blush. Since she has yet to transition to her actual room and crib (still cosleep) we've decided to nix a room for #2 and just do a bassinet in our room since we suck at transitioning to have #1 in her own room...no point to waste money on a room the baby probably won't be in

  • @WinchesterGirl those grey/teal/coral nurseries are right out of my dreams! I'm painting our whole house this summer, and both of our spare bedrooms will be the same light grey color. I'm going to decorate in teal and coral for a girl, and navy for a boy. My husband has these amazing blueprints for seacraft, novelties, and inventions that his great grandfather drew in the 1800s, and I'm planning to have a high-res copy or two made and framed for a boy's room. Decorations for a girl's room will probably be geometrical and simple patterns, stripes, polka dots, etc.

  • @mrsreidarson I'd love to see pictures if you have any! Our home is also mid-century and I was planning on keeping that style with a foresty/fox theme.
  • Our nursery is currently our guest room. We are trying to find a creative way to keep a futon in the room for when guests come and stay (at which time the baby will move back in with us or into DD room). Any ideas from other moms???

We're in the same boat.  I'm honestly considering just leaving the current bed in there for now and adding a crib.  We plan to keep the baby in our room for the first several months, and I figure if we're hanging out in the nursery during the day and I get tired I can just conk out and sleep when the baby sleeps.  Another option is to move in a twin bed that is currently in our basement and then just leave in there until LO needs it in a few years.
  • We only have two bedrooms. One's as messy and full of stuff as an almost-teenager can make it. The other is both our bedroom and my husband's home office. My office corner is the living room.

Beats the heck out of me where we're going to find room for a baby for the next 5 years. Im guessing they'll have a nook in our room for the first year or so. I suspect the "nursery" will be a cosleeper and a box of baby clothes.

We kept DD in our room in a rock and play until she was about 6 weeks old. Then, we started putting her down in her crib for one nap a day (all other naps were jut wherever whenever) and her first portion of night time sleep. Whenever she woke up in the middle of the night, we would feed her and being her back to our room. We did that until she was down to 1 night time wake up (around 2 1/2 months) then kept her in her room all night.

At about 6 months old she became a super independent sleeper where we could just put her down in her crib and she would play a little and fall asleep, then sleep through the night til at minimum 8 am the next morning.

  • @MonaLisaRalphio I bet navy would go fantastically! Also those prints sound awesome!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • We currently have each of our other two kids in their own rooms, but one of them will have to share eventually since our 4th bedroom is on the main floor and is used as our home office.  Our master is pretty large, so I think we will keep the baby in our room for the fist year (possibly less depending on how good of sleeper (s)he is) and create a sort of nursery "area" where the crib, rocker, etc will be.  I have been meaning to pain and decorate the master since we moved in almost three years ago but haven't gotten around to it yet (oops...), so I have decided that since I won't be creating a whole new room for number 3 (like I did for the first two) I will finally get our room done and will create a comfortable space for the baby along the way ;)  As a result, the baby's area will probably be relatively neutral, but I hopefully I make it so that the two areas blend well but still feel somewhat distinct from one another.  Wish me luck on that one...
  • Those owls are adorable.
  • @CherryBananas I'm in love with that nursery. I pinned it after you posted it, and then again when I was scrolling through Pinterest a few days later (forgetting that I had already pinned it). Our nursery space is also our guest room, so I am definitely planning to keep it pretty simple. Whatever goes in there, there will definitely be Sharon Montrose baby animal prints. All of them.

  • @floatingelephy this was my plan! Baby animals, but then I was like ugh they're so expensive and started searching google images for different hi res photos of baby animals.
  • @PerraSucia true... Maybe I will just register for those prints instead of things one actually needs... I kind of do need them... Haha ;)

Thanks! I will searching for bohemian nursery ideas on Pinterest and that was my favourite of the bunch.

ETA: mobile is driving me crazy! It only posts half of what I type.

Anyways, I love the first one you posted as well. I'm itching to throw a bit of colour in there, but I love the simplicity.

  • @CherryBananas agreed! It definitely needs a bit of colour. I'd love to do an accent wall of a fun wallpaper.
  • I'm over here like this kid will be in my room for at least 6 months, sooooo this is not on my radar. Lol

  • If it's a girl, I want to do vintage. For a boy, no idea!

  • We will have baby in our room for at least a year, but there is an alcove in our room that will be baby's space. If its a boy I like the idea of hot air balloons. For a girl, not sure! Maybe also hot air balloons? We did dinosaurs with both other girls.

  • I've always wanted to do a pink elephant theme for a baby girl, so hubby is letting me have it if we have a girl, but if it's a boy, he gets to pick the theme. He has no idea's yet...something tells me I may be picking that theme as well lol. I really like the idea of a rustic cabin feel. Lots of red plaid and moose and bears....

  • I want to do a tree/nature theme of some sort. But that's as far as I've gotten.
Found these wall decals, and they have pretty much all of the themes mentioned in this thread! Star Wars, Disney, air balloons, dinosaurs, etc. Some of these are small, but they're inexpensive.

  • @jodiarch please put up pix when you finish that mobile!
  • I know a new thread was started but just wanted to bump this in case others wanted to see ideas that we already shared!

  • DD's room has light gray walls so we will keep those for the baby's room since she is moving to another room and chose pink. So far I have only picked out the sheeting! I'm not wasting my money on a bedding set this time, because last time it was purely for show until baby came (not that I was aware of that fact yet). Since the curtains and stuff in the room are from Pottery Barn, I'll stick with them.

  • @BumpasaurusRex. Ack! Sorry, I didn't know there was a thread already. I think I wasn't on the board in July.
  • How early is too early to get a crib? Does anyone have mattress recommendations?
Or experience with IKEA cribs? I'll also check the gear thread again to see if there is baby mattress talk in there.
  • We are going with a safari theme and a relaxing green color for the walls. We found out last week we are having a girl, so I plan on doing some pink accents (like the rug and changing table linens). Can't wait to get started!
  • @floatingelephy We just ordered our crib yesterday and it will be delivered next week. Once we finally picked the crib we wanted I looked at the mattresses people commonly bought with that crib and read reviews. You want to have the crib picked out in case you need a certain size mattress (i.e. if you get a mini crib). I don't know about Ikea cribs but a few ladies have looked at or bought them.

  • @floatingelephy I purchased my crib a few weeks ago along with the mattress. We won't be assembling it for another week or two, but I don't necessarily think it's ever "too early" to buy a crib, especially if it's on sale! You can always wait until you're ready to assemble it.

  • The new baby will be sharing a room with DD (probably won't put him up there until around 6 months) currently her room is pink camo/ ranch type theme.  I figured we would just go with regular camo and just add more ranch type stuff to make it more boy friendly. I will also need to bring down the pink curtains and do something more neutral.  IDK.
I was just looking at bedding options and I am not really feeling anything at the moment.

The other problem we are running into is that the room is already small, so we will need to figure out how to configure the crib (has an attached changing table), toddler bed and dresser.

but I did start purchasing the wooden letters to spell out his name.  I am buying them one at time, so I can use my 40% off Hobby Lobby coupon. lol

  • @floatingelephy Our crib is the IKEA Gulliver. We used it for DD and were very happy with it and are using it again for baby boy this time around. No special sized mattress needed and very easy to put together. We did not convert it to the toddler bed, as we made her a loft from an IKEA bunk bed.
  • Was looking on Joann's website for fabric and fell down a rabbit hole.  It led me to these adorable embroidery kits on amazon: https://amzn.com/B00DUET0C2

They have a bunch of different animals and now I'm wondering how long each one would take.
