Steroid shot?

I've been MIA lately as we have been busting. We went on a babymoon, spent some time with our family at the lake and had a few doctors appointments.

I had had an appointment Tuesday and found out the cord is around babies neck (I have another ultrasound this week to check on things) and that I need a steroid shot. My DD was born st 35 weeks so this time he wants to give me a steroid shot around 32 weeks just to be safe. Anyone have any experience with getting one? Do they monitor you after giving it? I plan on asking him more next week st my appointment but was just wondering if anyone had any experience with it.

TIA

Re: Steroid shot?

  • I had a steroid shot to help lung development at around 35 weeks last time since my blood pressure was starting to creep up. I don't recall any extra monitoring as I was already going to the OB weekly. Hope all ends up well and your little nugget is ok!!

  • I don't recall if she had monitoring, but my SIL had one due to frequent pre term labor episodes. She ended up having my nephew at 34 weeks and he didn't need the NICU at all. I'm sure this isn't the case every time the shot is given, but it was a very good thing for my nephew.
  • Good to know. I have a divided uterus so there is a fairly good chance that LO will early. My water broke with DD around 35 weeks because I had no more room to carry her on that side. She didn't have any breathing problems, but did spend two weeks in the NICU as a feeder/grower.  This time we're just being cautious as LO is on the other side and we have no idea how much that side will stretch.

  • I had them a little over 3 weeks ago cause I went into early labor. They gave me 2 shots 24 hours apart in my hip. I got one on a Wednesday and the next one 24 hours later exactly. They told me they wouldn't fully work till Saturday morning so to try and keep the baby in till then which I did. She is still baking in my tummy. There was no real follow up after that. I've had 3 ultra sounds since then but they haven't mentioned anything pertaining to the shots having worked or not worked. Hope that helps.
  • I had the steroid shot at 26wk +3. 2 shots 24 hrs apart, numbing the area helps they sting a bit. They were already monitoring the baby daily with nst and my vital signs every 4 hrs. Let your Doc know if you experience any side effects. Like others said it takes 48hrs to be effective.
  • With DD I had the 2 shots 24 hours apart at 24 weeks. We had a lot of extra monitoring, but I think it was due to the situation, not the shots. All I remember is how much my butt hurt after them...
