Pregnant after 35

'Poisoned' by Light Tuna

So my doctor and all the books said you can have the "light" tuna because it has lower mercury levels and is deemed safe. Well, my husband and I shared a few cans (about 1 each) yesterday and now both of us are having MAJOR digestive issues.

Tongue Tied

I'll never have that again!!!!  It's easier to not have tuna at all during this pregnancy than tempt fate a second time. I've been in the bathroom all morning and haven't made it to the supermarket. This really sucks.

     FYI:

Here is some new (July 2006)info on tuna from Consumer Reports.  To quote part of the article:

"But Consumer Reports' fish-safety experts note that some cans are much higher in mercury than average. And they say there's enough uncertainty about the safety of even brief exposure of the fetus to such higher mercury levels that a more cautious approach is warranted.

To help guide pregnant women and others who wonder whether tuna and other fish are still safe to eat--and if so, how much--here are CR's answers to 10 crucial questions about mercury in fish. Note that all of the following recommendations for weekly or monthly fish consumption assume that no other mercury-containing seafood is eaten during that time."

    and

"Based on the FDA data and the mercury- exposure levels that the Environmental Protection Agency deems acceptable, here's what our experts recommend:

Pregnant women. Given the uncertainties about the safety of even chunk-light tuna, we think it's prudent for pregnant women to avoid canned tuna entirely."

  • that sucks.  Dh and i had some bad mcDonalds a few months ago- it has ruined McD's for me for a long time!

I limit tuna to once/week - that way i don't have to worry about it being light or white... I usually get it when i'm out during the day working - eating at diners, panera, etc....so far- it has not poisoned me - but i know how it feels when it does- you can't touch it again!

  • I've stayed away from Tuna thus far but I was considering it so maybe I'll put it on the back burner. DH just gave in and took me to Burger King. In the almost 6 years we've been together, we've NEVER done that before. We don't eat fast food much (well for the 3 years after he had me read Fast Food Nation I couldn't bring myself to it). I've been craving a Whopper something fierce and grease is the only thing that doesn't bother my M/S. I may pay for it later but hey, I'm also constipated again so maybe it will flush a few things out too.

At this point, I think labour and delivery is going to be a breeze because the first tri has been anything BUT!?

  • I have to say that I've been lucky in that I haven't vomited and have only felt mildly queasy at night (though that lessened last week). But the canned tuna?it was Bumblebee Light?gave both me and my husband a horrible case of diarrhea.

I'm finding it really hard to find things to eat for lunch.  I've nixed the deli meat I used to have almost every day and now no tuna. There's only so much Mac & Cheese and egg salad that I can handle.

I'm glad I'm feeling better now. But most of the afternoon I felt terrible. From constipation to diarrhea after 1 can of tuna. Oy vey!

  • That stinks!!  Hope you feel better soon.

To curb my tuna cravings, I make chicken.  It's Swanson's Premium White Chicken Breast in the can.  It's right next to the tuna at the supermarket.  I chop celery and add regular mayo, which I would never eat otherwise.  Sounds nasty, but it is sooooo good.  Way better than tuna.  I also toast the bread and add lettuce once in awhile.  My husband is grossed out by it.  I love it!!

Another idea for you, hummus on a wheat wrap with sliced tomatoes and lettuce.  Or cheese sub with tomatoes, pickles, oil and seasoning.  (I used to work in a deli in my HS years, I made these often...very good)  Spaghettios are great too!

    Hope you feel better!

  • Oh no! I'd die with tuna fish during this pregnancy (and my 1st.) I crave tuna salad horribly!
  • I think the chicken salad idea sounds like a perfect compromise!  As for more lunch ideas, how about soup?  You could take it in a thermos or heat it up in the microwave at the office?

Incidentally, I don't think there is an actual limit to the amount of mac & cheese I could eat.  =)

  • Ugh! Yeah when I tried my first light tuna, I was kind grossed out by it. First of all I drain all the liquid out of the can & run it under water to get rid of extra fishy taste/smell. I do this for either tuna, but the light is just too runny.

I have found a good alternative, canned salmon. Same location, is it better for you -I don't know & should probably find out but it certainly tastes better. They do say it's ok to eat 6 oz of solid tuna.
