1st Trimester

Amoxicillin

I've been battling a pretty nasty cold for over a week and my Doctor called in Amoxicillin yesterday. I checked with the pharmacist and my ob/gyn and they all agree that it is safe for me to take. I still wish I didn't need to take it. Until now, I've been trying to get along with Vicks, Breathe Right Strips, Claritin, and Cepacol drops.

Re: Amoxicillin

  • I had to take antibiotics during the first trimester because a cut on my foot. I was told it's safer for baby to be exposed to an approved antibiotic than a bacterial infection. I am currently 17w and baby is fine.

  • Were you actually examined by your doc? Or did you just call in to speak to them and they called your pharmacy? If you weren't actually seen by someone, I'd advise actually going in to get seen - if it's viral there's no point in taking antibiotics. I had a wicked cold that took me almost two weeks to kick (very abnormal for me) but I was seen by my doc and they felt it was viral and would clear up eventually. Your immune system is suppressed when you're pregnant, so infections may hit you harder and take longer to get better.

  • I am right there with you. I finally had to go to the ER yesterday because I was so weak I could barely walk. I'm pregnant with triplets so I checked with my perinatologist too and they assured me it's very safe. I'm looking at it as I need to get better for the babies. It's scary but I'm more scared about harming them from being so sick and unable to eat right and get enough fluids and sleep. I'm finally sleeping so I think it's kicking in. Hope you feel better!
  • Better to take the meds now than end up getting sicker and needing more treatment later.
