Boy: James Monroe. James, after my Pop Pop who just passed away. Monroe, because we liked it. We plan to call him Jaime but we'll see if the nickname fits once we meet him.
You know that James Monroe was a President, best known for the Monroe Doctrine asserting American supremacy as well as his harsh treatment of his slaves and his chronic overspending and indebtedness, right?
You may not care that people think you named him after the president, but it was the first thing that popped into my mind.
I knew he was a President but didn't think many, if anyone would make the connection. You're the first person to notice or bring it up. It didn't really bother me because 1. He's NOT named after the President and 2. After birth and initially telling everyone the name, his middle name will likely never be spoken or brought up. We still have plenty of time to let it marinate, it's not written in stone so if we decide that it bothers us, we'll think of an alternative middle name.
The bolded makes me very, very sad for the state of education in this country.

not to be a freak about organization... but I think there's probably another place appropriate for this part of the discussion. Can we just stick with baby names on this thread? I, for one, really don't care to flip through 10 pages of opinions on this when I, inevitably, forget someone's child's name down the road.

I mean, we all can't remember every single thing we learned in school 20 years ago. I figured people would think "Hey, that was a president" and move on. I honestly didn't even give it this much thought, I wanted James for my recently deceased grandfather. We were gonna use George Monroe until my girlfriend just named her LO George so we just adjusted without much thought.

BFP #1: 11/18/15 - CP BFP #2: 2/8/16 - EDD 10/20/16 IT'S A BOY!!!! DS Born 10/16/16
Team pink here so her name will be Adabella Still havent figured out the middle name it's between Victoria (DH's favorite), Elizabeth (My favorite also my great grandmother's name), or Amelia( my other great grandmother's middle name)
May I just say to those making the historical connections with names- While it is quite impressive that you are able to recall the historical significance of these names in American History on a dime (assuming you didn't just run to professor Google for a refresher) you can also pick up a phone book and find those names in a great quantities. Why? Because they are traditionally common names that ordinary people on a daily basis simply are NOT going to tie down to ONE historical figure. C'mon now.
I guess I'm the only one who sees posts like this from an infrequent poster and thinks #skinsuiter
@NoraAurora I actually had to laugh at this too... I was super frequent at the beginning and back when pregnant with my son but then work got crazy and I can't bump as much as I would like You can go back and see all my past posts though (I think?) to hopefully calm your nerves!
Also, I started this post because DH and I are completely stuck on naming this little girl. I am starting to fear she will be The Girl Who Has No Name (GOT anyone?)
Team Green Girl: Vivienne Faye (mn after my grandma) Boy: Anthony Ellis (fn same as dad, grandpa, great-grandpa) we aren't sharing irl so I feel a little weird putting it out on the Internet...oh well, we could still change our minds.
@minnemiska I think Vivian is our current frontrunner. I love it... DH doesn't 100% love it but I'm crossing my fingers he can get on board since we can't agree on anything else. Eek!
@mrscorker - maybe I should be ashamed of my history knowledge, but despite briefly thinking, huh, that sounds like a president, all I really thought was, that's a strong name with a great flow. Now, if you had settled on Adolf or Stalin, I may have been a little worried...
Yes, this exactly. @MRSCORKER the story behind how you came up with the name is really the most important part. Also, it's your baby. Name him however you want. Everyone else can deal with it.
My humble opinion on selecting controversial historical names: Many people on the street may not ever know the kid's middle name and even if they did they may or may not make the connection to the shitty things that historical figure was involved in. But you know who will see the middle name and very likely will make the connection? Teachers. College admissions. Doctors. Employers. If it were me (and I understand that it's not) I wouldn't want my kid to apply for college and have the admissions counselor wondering why on Earth this kid's parents wanted to commemorate that president/war general. Because they will not know the actual reason you picked it and they won't ever bother to ask. They will assume, and many of them would judge.
It's 10000% your own business what you name your kid, but it's also wise to be aware of these things.
I'm still not 100% on this name. It's our 3rd boy and I've exhausted my list of favorites. My oldest chose the name and likes calling him "Baby Jake" when he talks (yells) at my stomach to talk to him.
I also love Jonathan and James. I want him to have the same initials as my grandfather who just passed away.

@cd92007 I think the spelling Vivian is the more popular one right now, though apparently that version was once more common as a male name. I like how the French spelling fits with the middle name we've chosen. I had secretly had Vivienne as my top girl name for a while and I was very happy when I told DH and he immediately liked it as well!
@minnemiska I do love the spelling Vivienne but we all have four letter names in my family (even both sets of our parents!) so I want to shorten it as much as possible If we do name her Vivian, we'll probably call her Vivi most of time. But verdict is still out!
Flint came to us while watching Black Sails..not going to lie. We just liked it. The middle name will be either my middle name or my DH's family names. I still have a hard time calling him Flint and keep calling him by his unborn nickname of Bojangles.
@MRSCORKER I know you aren't familiar with me because I'm new but wanted to give my 2 cents: my stepfather's name is James Monroe (so I am a fan), while only my mom tends to call him Jamie I think it's a very cute name and I personally prefer that over Jimmy (and that's not to offend as my FIL is also named James and goes by Jimmy- suits him).
As as far as the connection to the president, yes he has gotten that every once in a while when the lightbulb goes off for people but it's few and far between. I have a degree in American history/culture and never did I negatively associate my stepfather's name with the actions of the 5th president of the U.S..
I wish my "reply" would work ugh! Just wanted to say vivian (any spelling) is so pretty and I love the nickname Vivi! For a girl we were going to name her Genevieve with the nickname Gigi and/or Vivi.
The south has arrived. And it would like y'all to stop.
Im from the south... I arrived at the beginning of this post. I don't want them to stop talking about their sweet baby names. Where are you from? Clearly not O16.

I believe lurking isn't inclusive of posting.
You lurk, then you post when you feel like it. Hope that helps.

Oh I'm sorry! I thought lurking on boards that you are not a part of meant lurking, not lurking AND posting. And when you do post, you advise that you are also "lurking" from the beginning - it helps people not take you seriously from the get go!

I have come to learn that the amount of time someone does something does not contribute to their level of expertise. Quality over quantity, sweet cheeks.
