Baby Names

Arden

Tell me honestly, is this a girl's name now? This is the only name my husband and I can somewhat agree on for our son but I'm nervous because it seems like it has gone to the girls. This is DH's late grandfather's name. I wouldn't want him to be in school and share his name with fellow female classmates. For this reason I keep shutting it down, but I do really like it.

Thoughts? TIA!

Re: Arden

  • It's totally all boy to me.

  • I only know one Arden, female in her 30s.
  • An app of mine looks like it says it used to be a mainly boy name and now it's used mostly on girls. In my opinion when I hear it, it's sounds more masculine!
  • I only know one Arden and she is a girl in her late 30s...
  • I know 1 Arden a woman in her late 20s
  • I mean it's not super popular in general, in the 900's for girls not in the top 1000 for boys.  That said I do think girl, although technically it's a surname and not really geared either way.  Although I'm always the one voting for traditional use of names, this one I do think girl.

  • The only two Ardens that I know of are female, but if you want to honor a male relative (who obviously had the name himself -  solidifying it's use for men) then go for it! I am all about bringing back names from older generations.
  • It seems on the uptick for girls, but it's not common.
  • I think since it's so uncommon for both sexes, it will be fine on a boy.

  • I think of a girl when I hear Arden, but it's so uncommon I don't think I'd be confused if I met a male Arden.
  • I know a 4 year old boy named Arden........
  • I know one Arden, a female in her 20's

  • For me definitely boy. I like it.

Long time lurker, but the bolded is exactly why it's frustrating when boy names are used by girls: it's one way, because of exactly what HouseSpouse said (this is not an attack on you, you have just brilliantly illustrated a point).

  • I'm NAF of Arden, just is very trendy to me. But I definitely associate it as a boy name... even though the only Arden I know is a woman in her 20s. Would much rather see it on a boy.
  • I dont think it's popular enough that this is likely to happen but it sounds like a boys name to me. I think part of the reason that people may associate it as female is the Elizabeth Arden connection.
  • My dads middle name is Arden, so I automatically think boy. I do agree that it has become more of a girl name though. I have always loved the name! I tried to get DH on board with it if we had a boy.
  • I think of it as a unisex name, but if I were to use it, I would for a girl.....
I really like the name though
  • My mind goes straight to girl.
