My doctor said on my first visit that the test probably wouldn't be covered since I am 33, but I really want the test. For peace of mind and to find our the sex. Does anyone know what it usually costs out-of-pocket? i see my doc on Tuesday, so hopefully I can get it done if it's not too expensive.
It's actually pretty cheap. The nurse at my OBs office said with the self-payer adjustment it would be around $99. I called the company and they said worst case scenario is $200 (the nurse suggested I tell the company I was told $99 and they'll usually honor it, since it's a specific amount).
Basically what will happen is they try to charge your insurance, and it will likely get declined. They'll send you a bill, probably for a crazy amount (don't panic!) and then you call and they adjust it. If you do some searching around online it seems like this is a relatively common practice right now while they're trying to make these tests more common.
My insurance denied price was $2800. There was a mix up though, and my insurance actually did cover it. I'm sure there would have been a reduced cash price though had it been needed.

The price actually depends upon which company your doctor orders from. Some of them (I think Panorama and Harmony) offer discounted prices ($100-200) if the insurance doesn't cover it. I'm not sure they all do though. My doctor's office only contracts through MaterniT21 and I didn't bother calling to see what their discounted price is but I was told it would probably be $350.
@trackgirl08 I did the Harmony and belive my insurance will cover (age and family history), but my OB said it would be around $135. So, it could really vary. We would have done it anyway.

Don't assume it will be cheap! If your doctor orders the test through Quest Diagnostics, they have their own test called Qnatal and the cash price is $2,762. If your doctor orders the test through LabCorp, they also have their own test and the cash price is $477. The discounted cash price of $99 - $200 is only for the name brand tests. If your doctor was planning on using Quest or Labcorp, let him/her know you would like a specific brand (Harmony, verifi, Panorama, or Materniti21) because of the much lower cash price.
Since our NIPT didn't include X or Y chromosomes, we had an early 4D U/S and looks like we're having a low risk BOY Chinese gender chart and my intuition were both right.

I have BCBS for insurance, and the doctor said that it could be around $700 for the NIPT, but if I didn't report it to insurance, it would be out of pocket $135 for the Harmony test. So I went with that.
Also, since the first test I took at 11wk2d came back "inconclusive", I had blood drawn again at 12wk4d and got my call back this morning! The nurse said before my test based on my age, weight, and health, baby's risk for DS was 1/514...and after the test my risk is low at 1/5,000!
I can't remember what else they tested for, but she said my risk started at 1/893, and after the test, my risk is now 1/10,000! So excited to be in the low risk category, and she will be calling me back in the next few days with the sex of the baby!
I had my blood drawn at my OB's office on 5/27 and STILL NO CALL YET. I left a message Friday to check in. NO call yet. I'm starting to get a little irritated........
Got the call today....low risk for everything, thank you Lord, and I can't believe it but we're having a GIRL!! I'm seriously in shock and I practically cried when I told dh the results lol.

i found out we are considered "high risk" with odds of 1/130 fr downs with triple screen (including NT measurement of 1.43mm)... got blood drawn today for INFORMASEQ which the doc said takes two weeks, but when I called company directly they said 5-7 days including weekends.. UGH I just want these results asap!
Got the call today from my MD office - results are in and they're all negative. Gender is going to be a surprise until Thursday (picking up the hard copy at the office on my day off - DH didn't want me finding out without him!)
Ladies, I could use some encouragement. I just got my MaterniT21 results back. We are having a boy, but the test indicated an "increased risk" for Trisomy 21. I will have amniocentesis to confirm. Have any of you ever gotten similar results on NIPT testing, only to have amnio or CVS come back saying all was well?
@aarabowl They didn't have NIPT when my mom was pregnant with my sister, but even at my mom's anatomy scan and with the amnio they told her that my sister would have Down's. My sister was born perfectly healthy, no Down's. I'm sure technology has advanced so there are fewer mistakes, but mistakes do happen.

I would ask for numbers on what "high risk" means. We were told we were high risk for Tri 18, but after meeting with a genetics counselor, we feel better about it. We aren't doing the amnio, but sometimes having a "one in xxx chance" can ease your mind. Good luck, my fingers are crossed for you.
Got a message from the hospital yesterday afternoon that was only 11 seconds long, but DH and I agreed that we would listen to any messages I got via voicemail, after I took the Harmony test, together. So, I had to wait until after 6 for that - just said to call. Well, the OB Nurse line was closed when I called so I figured I would just call this morning.
But, I got a message in my online account (which is great to have!) with the results... and we're low risk for all 3 chromosomes tested! Our oldest nephew has DS, so the family history was there.
The nurse didn't know how we wanted the gender revealed, so she didn't include that information. I just responded and thanked her for the information and advised that she can just respond to this message with it, then DH and I can open up the message together and find out. I am hoping that will be tonight!
Update: We are Team Boy! I kept calling the baby a she, and so was DH figuring the ratio of boys on his side, a girl would have to sneak in their somehow. Maybe next time, if we decide to try for another.

I'm so annoyed. I went to the doctor and they recommended I do the sequential screen (doesn't give me the sex of the baby) and free cell dna. They didn't have the box to send in the free cell dna so I can't have it. I probably won't get the latter done now. It's not easy for me to take time off work when I have a 1 year old who catches all sorts of things from daycare- i need to use my flexibility from my job for her care.
I guess I won't fully know if everything is alright nor the sex of the baby for a long time.
I'm just disappointed because I thought I would have answers in two weeks. I felt a bit silly crying all the way out of the office.

Congrats on having a boy. Boys are so much fun and love their mommies.
@ChrissyluvsPuppies Don't feel too discouraged! FI has a skin condition that baby could inherit but we aren't able to do prenatal testing for it. So we are pretty much "wait and see and hope for the best." It's hard not knowing but I know we'll be so overcome with joy to meet our baby finally that we won't care if it has the skin condition or not.
Thank you- hopefully there won't be a skin condition! I don't know my dad- so his genetics are unknown and I just worry and think that the worst will happen and I won't be able to plan for it. I know that I'm overreacting.
Having a low risk baby!!! Nurse didn't know we wanted gender revealed, so did not include that in call. Said she will send results to our dr, who I will see on Tues. Maybe she will let us know
I was dropped from my insurance for the month of June (nice, right?), so I opted only to do the NT scan and did not do blood work. Our NT scan told us we are low risk, so that's encouraging! We plan on doing the 2nd trimester blood work screening when I get insurance again starting in July.

Let me tell you, I am in the same boat, 31 and no history, so likely not covered, wanting that piece of mind and really wanting to know the sex definitively ahead of the birth (my college roommate is that mythical FTM who was told girl at her anatomy scan and out popped a boy).
My midwife's office works through Labcorp, so I called them to find out what the potential out-of-pocket cost was going to be. After going through an INSANE phone tree, they quoted me at about $1,000. Labcorp is NOT easy to work with at all.
Next I went to the company that does the Verifi test - very friendly and easy to communicate with. They quoted me closer to $200, but I couldn't find a draw site in my region. Boo.
FINALLY, I checked out MaterniT21 (sequenom) and found 2 draw sites in my area. They also quoted me around $200 out-of-pocket. Got the script from my midwife and called up the first draw site, had an appointment, then they called me back to say they were no longer members with sequenom and couldn't do the draw. OK, no problem, I'll go to the other site, about a half hour away and closer to my work. I get there, didn't realize I needed the all important and holy Requisition Form (*pause for moment of silence*). Fortunately I found the form on the Sequenom website and brought it with me to my appointment yesterday and got my draw today.
I found that the Verifi and MaterniT21 companies were really easy to communicate with and get information. It took me about a month of doing homework and calling various places, but it did finally work out.
I can't believe they got back to us in 4.5 business days. I didn't expect a call for another week. We are low risk on all markers, and we're having another girl They called when we were together and could hear it together on speaker phone. It was perfect.
@LinziLoo09 That was with the Harmony, correct? If so, our results came back in 6 days - and I had the appointment on a Thursday LATE afternoon. I thought that was quick, but happy to have the results before I got too impatient!
