Living with In Laws

We sold our house pretty quickly earlier this year. The plan was to move in with my in laws for a little while to save on money and find a house we really wanted. A month after moving in with them I found out I was expecting our 3rd in 5 months. Immediately we felt the pressure to find a house soon, not only due to more space needed, but my oldest is suppose to start Kindergarten this fall, and I am already tired of living there, I can only imagine how I am going to feel once I have had the baby. Between no privacy and their dog that barks whenever she wants, I feel like the "baby blues" are already setting in. Financially it doesn't look like we will be able to make something happen before the baby arrives, but I hope we can. My husband says we can go rent if that's what I want, but I don't want to be selfish or sound selfish? I just have this gut feeling that I am going to be a mess if we are still living there once we bring home the baby.

I hear you! I'm in pretty much the same situation. It's not ideal, but what helped us is making sure that we had our own space where we wouldn't be bothered (for the most part). That might help with some of the privacy issues. It's still a big adjustment, but if you can manage to clear out a section of the house to call yours for now, it just might work. Good luck and hang in there!

  • There would be room if my father in law would give up his man cave in the basement. There is a living space, bedroom and even a kitchen, but that would never happen. And I know my MIL would be all up in my business when I'm trying to recover and breastfeed.
  • I would say that renting is worth the peace of mind you'll get.
I wish your FIL would give up his man space because that seems like a great solution.

  • I can't imagine living with other people at this stage in my life, let alone with a whole family. I think everyone will be better for it if you can get out asap.

  • I don't think it's fair to ask FIL to give up his space. He's already giving up his own space with hosting your family.

  • Thank you ladies...for support and confirmation of how I was feeling. If we aren't  able to buy a house before baby gets here, renting is where we need to head, for peace of mind and sanity

i lived with my in laws for a month after my son was born and I was an emotional wreck and so depressed. They drove me insane. My advice to you is get out as soon as you can, hopefully before the baby arrives!

I run around pant and bra-less way too much to live with anyone but DH. Good luck finding your own space soon!

That what I try to tell my husband. I had a taste of baby blues with my first child. I'm already emotionally a wreck every other week. This pregnancy was unexpected, and I am just so afraid that he doesn't quite understand the emotional aspect of it.
  • Lurking from October..

My husband and I also sold our house to move in with his family while building our next home. We are hoping it will be finished by October but it's looking like November. I couldn't imagine living there with 2 kids! I would definitely rent.

Hi... I know how hard that is! I moved in with my husband a month before we got married. We then were living inside mil's garage for almost 3 years! That helped us to save a lot to put a nice down payment in our house, and for DH finish paying off his car. Having that said: yes! You will have days that you do want to run for a space that is yours, you will get super upset if someone calls your children's attention for doing something that you don't think it is a problem (but it is not your house), yes you will be uncomfortable to walk around, yes the dog will bother because it is not yours - remember, you and your family might bother the dog and the inlaws also! The most important thing is to think with your head and not your heart! You have good reason why you guys moved there. Try to put your emotions on the corner. I did have days that I just wanted to go out of that garage and go for a rental! God knows! But then I would try my best to calm down and remember "we are saving to buy ours!". Once we found our property, it started the fight with the banks to get someone to finance us... all the stress of buying took us 7 months! Do not give up on your goal! You are already in the situation. Life gave you lemons, make a lemonade out of it. Try your best to see positive things about being there. It is not a forever situation. You can do it!!!! ;)
