So don't get me wrong, I feel really bad about that little boy and the alligator in Florida, BUT my UO is with the people blaming the resort for only having "No Swimming" signs up and not "Watch for Alligators". YOU'RE IN FLORIDA! The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commision estimates 1.3 MILLION alligators there. If a sign says "No Swimming", wouldn't you think it's for a reason, regardless of if it is alligators, deep water, flesh eating bacteria... it's for your safety! It seems like there are so many people wanting to blame the resort for not having proper SIGNAGE. Ok, yes, maybe they shouldn't allow people to even get close tot he lakeside if they really want to fool proof it.

My biggest question about this story is, why the fuck were they out on the beach with young kids that late at night? Secondly, why was the 4 year old in the play pin, not the toddler?

Very sad, toddlers slip away easily but some extra precaution or research into the surrounding areas would have prevented this.
  • I don't understand the hype behind Morrissey. I like a few of his songs, but the level of worship that people have for him is just mind-boggling to me. and I can never get anyone to explain the appeal to me! They just look at me like I'm crazy and tell me I "don't get it."

They were participating in a movie night on the beach.

Hindsight is 20/20. I don't think anyone was at fault- not Disney, not the parents, not even the alligator. It was just a terrible accident.
agreed... sort of. I think the resort has some fault here. They have that area set up with beach chairs and, to your point, a movie night. It's an inviting area. You (meaning the resort) can't assume that everyone knows about the alligators in FL.... not that a 2yo could read a sign but it could be something that would deter parents from assuming their children are safe in this environment that the resort has set up to look like a fun area to hang out. I think they have some responsibility to not make an area like that enticing for visitors.

But, as you said, a terrible accident when it's all said and done.

If you look at the pictures of where they were you can see why they may have been wading in the water. It''s set up like a beach. When I see a no swimming sign at a beach my mind goes to that there aren't lifeguards on duty and owners don't want liability...not necessarily dangerous animals. And even though I'm aware of and have seen many alligators in Florida, I can't say I would have done any different if I didn't see any out right then.

I feel really bad for the parents. What a horrifying situation. Also, some toddlers go to bed later at night. I'd like my toddler to go to bed early, but sometimes that doesn't happen, especially on vacation.

I was big into Morrissey in college. Then somewhere along the way I was like "this isn't even all that great." And thus my Morrissey phase ended.

  • UO: I don't see the value in themed nurseries. My MIL asked me, "what colors did you select for the nursery?" And I'm like...that's a requirement? I don't see the value in painting the walls a specific color just for the baby, I think the colors I selected after I bought the house are just fine. I don't mind that some of the furniture is wood and some is painted white, some of the baskets are blue and others are bright green. As much as I like looking at a beautiful nursery on Pinterest, I just don't see the value in getting all the jungle stuff, all the cat stuff, all the elephant stuff, etc. for an infant who hasn't developed personal taste yet . I figure if the baby has a place to sleep, a place to store clothing and diapers, and cool stuff to look at, why exert the extra effort into styling a room differently just for baby?
I'm decorating the nursery like I would any other room in the house. I had a very plain guest room in there before with nothing on the walls so it's like starting with a blank canvas. Everything will "go", but there's no "theme" and I'm keeping it mostly neutral so we can add as his personality develops. The "colors" if you want to say that are white and khaki but it's because the walls are already a tan color. We will have some blue in there since he's a boy.  Some themes can be cute, but I feel like a lot of them are overdone. Everyone asks me if we will have a nautical nursery because we live at the beach...but as I said when we bought our house....it's my HOME, not a beach house. So I decorate like I would living anywhere else. Plus, every little boy I know has a nautical room.

THIS. I had to sit through a Morrissey show at Coachella years ago. If it weren't for the fact that McCartney was playing next (and I'd been waiting in the desert heat for 9 hours to be close to him), I definitely would've left mid-show.

This one is really unpopular. Here we go.

I don't like all of the strict organization of the board. I actually get excited when people make a random thread - even if I don't participate. We had organization on my previous BMB, but not as stringent as this one. I feel like I check in here less because it's all the same threads. Call me crazy, but I like the wackadoos to post random, unnecessary threads. If I don't want to read them, I won't.

ETA: This could double as a FFFC post.
I don't actually disagree with this 100%. I think there's a middle ground somewhere, so that the board isn't toally clogged but also isn't overly repetitive. But I don't know what that is, and don't have any good suggestions so I'm not in a spot to criticize really.
  • We rented a private home on VRBO one year in the FL Keys, and even they had a sign out for the one small alligator that frequents their dock. You would think if a private home can do it, a resort would. But I'm also on the line of if they had a no swimming sign, stay out of the water. Not that an alligator or crocodile can't come up on land....

I'm the same about him. I don't get the hype. He's a phenomenal actor, but I don't go gaga over him

@scostel2 Yeah, I still love it here and I'm on several times a day. So, clearly it's not putting me off. I just think it's a little strict.

But, I'm no rule breaker, so I'm not going to start any rogue threads. ;)

I don't find him the least bit attractive. Meh.

On maternity photos, I decided to do them because 1. They're not that expensive and 2. I like to frame photos, so anything impromptu cell phone photo quality is not going to cut it.
  • I think maternity photos are really weird. I definitely do NOT take for granted that I am pregnant, but I just don't see why I need a photo shoot dedicated to it.
I hate them. I love take belly photos and I don't mind people taking pictures of me and my husband, but I would never spend the money to do a whole photoshoot. I didn't even want to do engagement photos, I only did them because the shoot was included in my wedding package and I was given digital copies of all the pictures. I got so much use out of those photos as decorations for the wedding. But I wouldn't be putting these photos up anywhere.  :#

  • We rolled our Christmas card photo shoot into a maternity shoot. We will have family photos taken next month and that is the only "maternity" photos I'll have taken. I'd rather use that money for expensive newborn photos.

Ugh, I keep going back and forth on this! I want some sort of record of this pregnancy that's not just me in a work bathroom taking selfies, but sometimes I just can't with maternity photos. The second they want my husband to make heart hands over my belly, I'm out of there.
I feel the same, but I don't really want pictures of just me hanging around the house. I really like maternity shoots that are done almost like an engagement shoot and that's what the bulk majority of my pics will be.
  • I'm over here reading all these posts and have so many questions because apparently I am not a hip person...and certainly out of date.

    Who is Morrisey?

Who is Tom Hiddleston?  Isn't T-Swift with that DJ guy?  Did they break up?

I feel awful for the parents of that toddler in the alligator incident.  I don't know the whole story...were they swimming?  Was the toddler swimming as well?  Why did it take them 16 minutes to call for help?

My UO is that, sometimes I feel like totally nesting for the baby...and want everything PERFECT.  Nursery, crib, etc....but about 60% of the time, I'm like "meh, whatever.  the baby won't care what kind of sheets he gets!  he won't care what kind of woven wrap I get.  I'm just gonna take this $50 and spend it on workout clothes and comfy leggings."
  • Morrissey is a singer/songwriter who was especially popular in the 80s. He was in the band The Smiths. He's a big vegan/gay/goth/indie icon.

  • Whatevs, Hiddles is HAWT.

Tragic accidents happen and it's not always somebody's *fault.*

We didn't have a theme for DS' nursery and he continues to thrive and grow, and even hit milestones early.

    I like trucker hats. BOOM.
  • I don't hate themed nurseries but I do think the crib bedding sets are dumb. They're so expensive and you can't use half the stuff. The bumpers are dangerous and the blankets are huge and useless for anything other than dropping over something. I don't even know what else comes in them since I never planned to buy one.

I didn't want to do a theme for the nursery but hubby got all excited about his SW idea. And, being a nerd myself, I can't blame him. But I kind of wish I could've just picked some colors and started buying whatever I want.

I made that mistake with my first baby. Ended up selling the whole set at a garage sale for $20. Worst baby purchase ever.

My UO: I respect their artistry and talent, but I dislike almost all of the music by Justin Timberlake and Usher. I've tried, and I just can't really stand either of them. I feel like I'm totally missing out on the hype. And Pitbull and Flo Rida just need to go away at this point.
