This is really just for fun since we already have names for baby #1 and I'm currently still making him or her, but DH and I have had fun thinking about a name for baby #2!

I love the name Toby - it has a bit of a family connection and I wanted your thoughts on it.

a name I could see as a unisex name, but it's kind of a stretch for a girl.

Re: Toby

  • I think Toby makes a great nickname,  but not a good full name.

  • @bringmemylongwordho - what would you suggest for a full name? I hate Tobias (if it were a boy, obvs).
  • Boy name... or a pet name (I know a couple of dogs named Toby) but seriously, dont do it at all.

Tobias is the obvious one. And I imagine most would assume it was short for Tobias.

There really isn't a full version for a feminine name, it looks like it was popular as a given name in the 30s 40s, because of an actress named Toby Wing (she was born Martha Virginia Wing)

If it's a family name I'd use it as a middle.
  • Definitely a boy name, but I think it's fine as a stand alone name. If I met a guy who said his name was Toby I wouldn't automatically assume it was short for Tobias.

I will say, whenever I hear the name Toby I automatically get the urge to say "My name is Kunta Kinte!" But I don't know how many people would get the reference.

  • I like it, either as a nn for Tobias or Tobit, or just as a stand alone name. Feels solid and classic. Also makes me think of Tobey Maguire from the Spiderman movies.
  • Toby sounds more like a nickname than a stand alone name to me, but if I met a guy who told me his name was Toby I wouldn't side eye.

Toby is NMS but definitely boy.

On a side note, reminds me of a horror flick where a child has an imaginary friend named Toby... I'm a horror buff so I should remember which but I don't. Maybe Hide and Seek?

    ETA: It's Paranormal Activity. Duh.
  • I prefer it as a nn but wouldn't side eye it aa a given. But male only

  • I'm a lady and my middle name is Tobey, after my grandmother who had a middle name of Tobey, after another relative I never met, etc.

If you like it go for it - just middle name it.  I would have NOT liked it if my parents had given it to me as a first name.
