Baby Bedding?

Anyone want to share what they've bought/plan on buying for baby bedding?  I swear I've ordered so many fabric swatches it's confusing me even more what direction I want to go in.  I haven't seen much bedding in the nursery thread, and I'm needing serious inspiration!  And I'll just live vicariously through those of you planning little girls' nurseries. :)

This is what I bought. The quality was way better than I expected and I received it within 5 days of placing the order! I was very pleased.

  • @fitlady21 I bought the shabby chenille bedding from them when I was pregnant with my daughter and really liked it.  I probably would've used it again if this one was a girl.

All you really need is a crib sheet. The full bedding set is such a waste (even though it's awful cute).

We are going to let our daughter pick out some art/ pictures for the walls and reuse her neutral colored sheets (greens, animals ect)

  • Deep down I know this @klv but I'm still agonizing over it.  There's a navy dresser I want for his room, but I haven't found anything I love to go with it.  For sure I'm overthinking this.

  • I'm keeping it simple. Honestly with my first I bought expensive crib bedding to go with our theme, and didn't even use any of it for the actual baby. It was simply decoration. Cute but not worth $230 bucks.
A simple crib sheet over a mattress protector (MUST HAVE materess protector, it will save so much cleaning and wreaking a good matress after the first poop explosion, or stomach flu) one blanket and that was all I used. I used sleep sacks after we were done swaddling. I have half a dozen thick warm blankets, and sleep sacks of all sizes up to size 2t.
You honestly need very very little stuff, and since the crib bumpers aren't even recommended unless their breathable I didn't even use those either.

    @Julia70286 That's an awesome blanket!

And yes to what @klv said - a fitted sheet is the only thing you should have in the crib with a newborn.  BUT if you have a convertible crib, you could probably use the whole set (minus the bumpers) when your child is older (I think around 2 or when you convert the crib to a toddler bed).  We only bought sheets with our first and we'll probably just use those with the second.

    Edited for spelling.

I know it's tempting to go with the super cute stuff. Though even if you plan to use the quilt ect later for the toddler bed, keep in mind that your kiddo will have a mind of it's own by then. At 2 1/2, my daughter was super into Dora. One of the selling points of getting her excited about her "big girl bed" was letting her pick out her own bedding set.

So what you choose now (trains, nautical, pooh ect) may not be what your kiddo is interested in in 2-3 years from now

  • Sleep sacks are expensive, I'll be spending my budget in that and lot and lots of sheets. I went through so many sheets with DS!

I love my sleep sacks! It took a long time (roughly around 2) before either of my girls knew how to cover themselves up in the night if they got cold.

  • We got a Winnie the pooh set from my mom but we just do sleep sacks at night.
  • @nataliemaephotography ooh, I love that! Can you share where it's from, please?

  • Just crib sheets and sleepsacks. Maybe a mesh/breathable bumper but I'm not really sure we need it so we'll see
  • Crib sheet. Done. Breathable bumper for after the first time they get an appendage stuck.
  • @nlane0723I was thinking of doing a wilderness or camp type bedding too.  We have a big wood stump I'm turning into a side table, so it fits with that theme!  Do you have an etsy seller picked out yet?

So, those of you just doing crib sheets, do you not do a crib skirt?  I don't have my crib yet, but we did a skirt with dd's bedding, I can't remember what it looks like without.

And we'll be doing sleep sacks again with this kiddo!  I think dd was in them until at least 2, until she grew out of the XL size.

  • Our bedding is going to be all white and I'm doing white Burts Bee's crib sheets and have registered for a white monogrammed quilt that will be more for decor and newborn photos. The crib skirt is going to be made from fabric to match the pillows going on the twin bed in the room. I've also registered for sleep sacks for after swaddling is done.

  • We registered for sheets and then bought fabric from Joann's that DH's dad is going to make a decorative blanket out of, along with a valance and crib skirt. We're going with a classic Winnie the Pooh theme.

  • @sidecarsareforbishes - no skirt for DS but I'd consider it for DD.

Exactly! We were bumper free until DS1 got a leg stuck while rolling over, then added a Breathable Baby one. No blankets, pillows, skirts, etc. Cute crib sheets alone are expensive enough for me.

  • Yeah I always kinda laugh when baby bedding sets are brought up. Probably the top useless item. Plus, the other poster is right about toddlers getting opinionated on what they sleep with. My daughter has favorite blankets.

All I will be buying is:

    waterproof mattress protector
2-3 sheets in various colors matching the theme
and a coordinating crib skirt if I can find it
    Swaddle blankets
    sleep sacks

  • Necessities:
    Crib sheet
Waterproof pad (we always layered pad, sheet, pad, sheet, that way if there was a blow-out or spit-up at night we could just remove a layer)
    Breathable bumper
Swaddle or sleep sack for warmth

    Waste of money:
    Blankets, comforters, pillows, non-breathable bumpers

Optional: Crib skirt (we skipped this)

This is what I went with for baby boy #2, I got most of it on clearance at babies r us and the rest on Amazon. It's much softer than I expected.

@LizaKate1213 Great idea on the layering - thanks for the tip!
  • I ordered mine from carousel designs, I totally admit it was expensive but I wanted it so.... I got sheet, crib skirt bumper and comforter that I realize I won't be using immediately. The place has so many customizable options, I love the set!!

FTM here, but I read that layering pads/sheets in the crib potentially increases the risk of SIDS. We got a waterproof mattress so we're skipping the waterproof pad.

  • We just use a sheet and breathable bumper. My mom is making the baby a quilt, but I don't even put it in the crib.

  • Do they even need bedding? The narrative I've been fed is basically 1 fitted sheet and a swaddle, no pillows, blankets, or bumpers.
  • Jumping on the "bedding is a waste" train. I bought DD a crib set, with a quilt and stuff, but not only could she not have it in the bed with her, she slept in our room until she was sleeping through the night so it wasn't used for months.

This one, I'm not even going to bother putting up a crib right away. Registered for some super cute sheets, and am going to reuse DD's nursery pictures on the wall (one of Rainbow Fish, one of some bears that used to hang in MY room when I was little, etc...). People gift so many blankets and stuff anyway, I just say go with a color scheme and be done with it, save yourself and money and the hassle.

I've never heard that.  Hmmm.  The mattress protector we used for dd was pretty thin, and then the crib sheets I've always used fit suuuper snug.  I wonder if it's because layering reduces their ability to breathe if they end up face down?  Ugh, I don't miss this part of having a baby.  SIDS is seriously terrifying.

  • Y'all are convincing me...maybe I'll go with a crib sheet this time and put the money into cute decorations rather than bedding he won't use.  I'll have to see what it looks like without a crib skirt, but maybe that doesn't really matter either since that gets lowered as soon as they can pull themselves up to stand in the crib.

  • @sidecarsareforbishes I think that's the reasoning. I definitely can see the necessity in using a thin pad if your mattress isn't waterproof, but layering several pads and sheets probably poses more of a risk I would imagine.

I'm also interested in whether anyone actually uses them. They seem like a good idea but also like they could be a pain to actually deal with.

  • We did purchase a bedding set but it was on clearance and it was too cute not to grab. But I won't be using the bumper or the comforter until he's old enough to need them. It'll just be the cute sheets and swaddles at first. And my cousin told to commondier, better word than steal, the bed pads from the hospital. Her nurses were pretty cool and told her when they weren't looking grab the pads. They even brought her in extra. She said they are the best ones to have and work really well under the crib sheets for protection.
