Maternity Clothes

Okay ladies! Help me out! My other two were born in August, with DD1 I was a student and had the summer off with DD2 I had a work uniform (scrubs). Either way, I very happily lived in sundresses. This go around I work at the university and winter where I live is not conducive for sundresses. Any other BTDT winter pregnancy mommas have some tips? So far my plan is to stock up on LLR leggings and tunics.

  • Same. I intend on buying a bunch of leggings/fleece lined tights in the maternity department and tunics.

  • Previous pregnancy was also an August baby, but I am definitely going the leggings and dress route, with cardigan layering when it gets cold.

  • I am *SO* excited to be pregnant when it's cold out.. cold weather maternity clothes are adorable.
  • I was pregnant through the winter a couple of times, through fall once. I think it depends on what makes you comfortable and how cold it gets. (And how you feel the cold)

I needed a warm winter coat and sweaters. Leggings were great but certain days I wanted heavier pants. (For work leggings were not allowed)
  • My plan is leggings, tunics, riding boots, cardigans, scarves, and maxi dresses.  I can transform quite a few of my summer maxi dresses into fall outfits.

For the lazy days at home, all the sweatpants.

  • My first was born late March so a little experience. If I didn't have about a 1/4 mile walk to work I would have sucked it up with and ill filling jacket. I ended up getting a cheap one from Walmart that I didn't love but the price was right.

  • I plan on just wearing pajamas when I'm not in scrubs lol. My DS is a summer baby so the only 3rd trimester clothes I have are dresses too and I hate pants, leggings will definitely be put to good use too.
  • Oh, God, I don't want to talk about this. I LOVED the timing last year. I wasn't super huge during the summer, and I could keep on wearing dresses/skirts until the baby came in October. This time, I'm pretty much going to HAVE to get maternity leggings/tights, and that bums my flow. I hate buying maternity clothes.

I mean, I have a ton of leggings. What are the odds that I can just roll them down under skirts? Someone make me feel better. Or, at least, link me to cheap maternity tights/leggings, because I refuse to pay big money for this crap.

  • Huge fan of Old Navy because of lower prices and solid selection with free shipping and returns at the store.
  • Jessica Simpson maternity jeans are pretty comfortable and I already have some winter sweaters from last time- although I'll be bigger this time around since DD was born in April

I bought a lot of my maternity clothes from thredup.com with DS.  I got a lot of nice clothes that were very inexpensive.

I plan to live in sweater and wrap dresses, or long cardigans and leggings. My snow boots are barely worn and already half a size too big, so I'm hoping they'll accommodate any bigfoot issues. As for a coat, I'm not sure what will work. I do have a belted down coat with some give, but not THAT much give! @round2 's idea of buying a cheap coat in the right fit is pretty great.

Actually, the Old Navy "boyfriend" tanks or whatever they are called (the long ones) were great last pregnancy. Long enough to go over the bump, and I can still wear them now. I also liked the Old Navy fold-over skirts. Again--I would flip it up over the belly pregnant, but they were great to transition back to my size now, and I still wear them. So, from size 6 up to huge-ass pregnant, they worked.

  • @SPurp13 ON has some good deals online right now. And Zulily!!!
  • Thankfully I still have all my maternity clothes from last time (beginning of March baby) and they will all work. The only thing I will need to purchase this time around are some pants, and maternity leggings. My work is a lot warmer this time so I may need to purchase some tanks and cardigans.

Same here. I'll just use all the same clothes again, however I am going to buy more pants. I only have 2 pairs from last time around.
  • I have tons of winter maternity but I plan to expand my LLR legging collection and buy a few irmas.
Rachel, mama to Ava (6), Olivia (4), Nora (2), and baby#4 on the way.

  • I wait for deals at Motherhood Maternity.  I just took advantage of their flash 50% off sale, but pickings were slim for winter clothing.  Had to really look.  Most items were summer clothes, and I isn't want to buy any summer clothes since I know I won't be showing until fall/winter-ish.

Anyway, I still shop for the deals, even if it's early (was buying diapers months ago using Target diaper deals!) in order to save money! :-)

I also agree with PP about Zulily!

I'll check ON and the Zu. I looked on there before, but I get nervous because of the no returns (Zu). I also don't know if I should just wait...I mean, it's early, anything could happen, but most importantly, I MIGHT be able to wear my current leggings under the belly, MAYBE (probably not). So, I might not have to buy any. But I'll check for shits 'n gigs.

  • +1 for thredup.com - it was hit or miss once the clothes arrived but since they are inexpensive I count it as a win because work maternity clothes are expensive (assuming you can't get away with leggings and a tunic sweater).  Work staples from gap maternity was good for second trimester pants once the hair tie trick expired.  I didn't like Motherhod Maternity - seemed matronly in fit...  Pea in the Pod is good but reserved for key pieces due to price.   Last time I was due in the summer so just bought larger sized sundresses at Target etc. for the whale stage.  I don't think that will work so much for winter clothes except maybe the sweaters depending on the style.  I'm in Michigan so the winters are real.

Am NOT looking forward to buying a winter coat and more suit jackets/blazers Ugh!

My goal is to try and wear maxi dresses/skirts as long as possible, then switch to leggings.  I work in a super casual place so near the end, I might try to get away with yoga pants.  I'm trying to buy as little as possible!
  • @caribbeanmama thank you for the reminder! Last night I looked through my box of clothes and found a baggies with hairbands and was trying to figure out why I put them in there. I was a huge fan of the belly bands or tummy sleeves. I have them in a few colors. Since all my current bottoms are winter (full length pants) I'm hoping they will allow me to avoid having to get anything summer.

  • I bought 1 pair of what I call "beginner" maternity pants for work. They have the belly band attached but you can also fold it down like a maxi skirt until your belly is big enough. I just wear long, flowy shirts over it. I rotate that 1 pair with maxi skirts, stretchy skirts, and a couple sundresses. I'm just so bloated. When I'm not at work I wear comfy workout shorts and tank or the stretchy linen shorts that are popular with a shirt. Those shorts are amazing!!

The problem I'm having right now is bras. I've been wearing the most comfortable one I can find but I'm pretty sure I've already grown a cup size. I've been looking for wireless bras in my size without much luck. Normally I'm 34D, I tried on a 34DD last night and it felt so much better. I usually buy from VS since they actually have my size but I don't want to spend $30-50 on 1 bra if I grow more and I don't want to get a nursing bra yet for the same reason. All I want to do is rip this thing off right now!

For the ladies that have been through this, do you have any suggestions where to buy bras? What did you do in the early stage?

  • @becbec28 I am a VS girl when not pregnant. Last pregnancy I found Soma and fell in love! They have great deals so I was able to get a few bras to get me through my constantly changing pregnancy body. I also bought my nursing bras there...underwire not padded.
  • @becbec28 is there a VS outlet near you? They tend to still have all the bra sizes, and if you're not picky about pattern you can get good deals!
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • @becbec28 I'm having the same problem! I'm usually a 32D which also means I get mine at VS because nobody carries it. My regular bras are unbearable right now, and I have a feeling I need to go up to a 34D or DD. I think I'm going to try checking the clearance racks soon at Kohls, and maybe I'll check Ross too to try and find something somewhat comfortable, but not too expensive since I don't know how much more they're going to grow. Don't know if I'll have any luck, but i figure it's worth a try.

  • @becbec28 I'm much smaller Chested than you... just a 34B normally but I also already grew a cup size. I'm afraid to buy any bras now in case I still get larger just because of how fast they are growing. I can't wear my regular bras my cup overfloweth lol but I've been relying on 24/7 sports bras for now. They are pretty comfy for day and sleeping too. I don't work though so I can get away with wearing pretty much anything, but sports bras might work for you since they are a little cheaper than regular bras. But I'm not familiar with being that large so I could be all wrong for you

    Re: bras

I started out a 32A/B now I'm a 32 DD after DS #1.  I'm a VS girl as well- measured at 32DDD by their sizing (they run small) after milk had come in and settled.  Now while pregnant I didn't want to waste money on a transient size so I got nursing bras and sports bras at Target for lounging and sleeping and squeezed the girls into the little bras I already owned until I got bigger bras at target - I regret this. Those bras didn't feel good!  By the time I deemed it worthwhile to invest in a proper fitting by a bra expert, and get ''mummy" bras I had been wearing uncomfortable bras for a long time.  It made such a HUGE difference in comfort to get proper bras!  I didn't realize how uncomfortable I had been for so long!  Pregnancy can be so uncomfortable as it is - why add to it!  Two years later (baby is 11 months) - I'm still not back to my original bra size.

I found the Bravado bras comfortable.  I haven't tried Soma bras.  Note that the "mummy" bras don't really lift very much..they are designed not to smoosh the girls too much...so they don't exactly scream sexytime... VS has wirefree bras (t-strap) that are comfortable and give a bit of a lift.

Splurge on the comfy bras!  Whatever fit that is for you - it's sooooo worth it!
  • My non-pregnancy breasts are about a 32G, so I do Nordstrom for bras. Ok, I buy most of them at Nordstrom Rack, but Nordies is pretty good at bra fitting around here and has a remarkably wide range of sizes and fits.
  • I'm also smaller chested, I started out a 34B, but I went out an bought an "underwire-less" bra from WalMart in a 36C and it is SOOO comfy. I feel good because I know can continue to wear this bra for a while even as my boobs continue to grow. It might be just a  tad too big right at this moment, but it's not noticeably too big and is quite comfy.
