Re: Let's talk careers!

  • What's your job? I am a social worker and work in child protection. My position is an Indeprndent Living Specialist and I work with youth between the ages of 16 and 20 who are or were in foster care.
What do you like best about your job? Least? It's pretty much the best job in the world. It's really amazing to be part of the life of these resilient youth who are working toward a healthy and successful transition in to adulthood. It's so great when a youth calls to share an accomplishment and they tell me I was the first they wanted to call. Makes me feel like I'm doing something right :)
Least: The constant lack of regard and the negative pre-conceived notions case workers/legal system/community have regarding these youth. There is little faith and no recognition for their successes. These youth are stigmatized based on their biological family's actions, which is a real shame.
Will you have work restrictions? I might have less field time but can still have youth come to the office.
Will you work until you have the baby? I hope to work up to my due date.
Do you get any maternity leave? Just whatever I have in my annual leave bank and FMLA.
How long are you taking off? 12 weeks
    Will you return? Heck yes.
What does your SO do? Transaction manager for the state university system (business office stuff).
Does your SO get any leave? He can use sick leave up to a week and however much personal leave as he'd like. He'll probably take the week after birth and a month when I have to go back to work.
  • What's your job?
I'm an Administrative Assistant at the college here int he Culinary, Dietetics, and Hospitality department. Which is awesome, because I can get all kind of healthy food advice from almost anyone of my professors! :)

What do you like best about your job? Least?
I LOVE that I help people achieve success. Anyone who is an Admin understands that you basically do everything. I love it when I can go above and beyond to help my students in hard places. I have had several nearly break down in tears in my office I've been able to be the one to fix their situation. It makes me feel so good!

Least? I don't like 'desk' jobs. I was never fond of sitting around all day, however I have a very understanding boss that allows me to get up and walk around campus here and there to stretch my legs. :)

    Will you have work restrictions?
    Nope.
Will you work until you have the baby?
So far that's my plan. I don't have a physically straining job, and the baby is due only a few weeks after we come back from christmas break, so I don't think it will be too stressful either. My sister-in-law stayed at her job all the way up until her water broke while she was working, I figured I can do it too!
Do you get any maternity leave?
Yes. It is under 'short-term' disability. They don't really sent any of that up until I pass 12-weeks. I get at least 6-weeks paid leave.
How long are you taking off?
I'm not sure yet, that depends on how my doc appointments go.
    Will you return?
Yes. Unless my hubby can find a better job/get a promotion
    What does your SO do?
Front End manager at a store here.
Does your SO get any leave?
Not sure if he gets leave, but he does get extra pay for every week that I am out.

    What's your job?
Medical assistant at a busy primary care office.

What do you like best about your job?
The relationships you build with your patients!

    Least?
    The paper work!

    Will you have work restrictions?
Based on my previous pregnancy, probably as I get farther along. I have chronic hypertension and that caused major problems in DS' pregnancy.

Will you work until you have the baby?
I want to this go around. With DD I was taken out at 32 weeks (had her at 38.5), although her pregnancy was far less risky than DS'. With DS I was taken out at 32 weeks as well, and ended up delivering him at 36 weeks on the dot. I'm not getting my hopes up too much.

Do you get any maternity leave?
Yes; whatever time I have saved up and short term disability is how I will be getting paid.

How long are you taking off?
6 weeks, like my last two.

    Will you return?
Yes, I have no choice but also because I need adult interaction in my life!

    What does your SO do?
    He works in a restaurant.

Does your SO get any leave?
They'll give him the mandatory week or whatever they get but its not paid

yes but hopefully just part time

  • What's your job?  I do order entry for a restaurant supply company
What do you like best about your job? They are very laid back, my boss and owner of the company is only 35 so we have a lot in common and get along great.  On non busy days we can basically do nothing if we want. Least? If something goes wrong the owners get really upset and take it out on us
Will you have work restrictions? no I just won't go down to the warehouse as much
Will you work until you have the baby? I will just stay home after Christmas holidays
Do you get any maternity leave? Yes, I'm in Canada so I get a year
How long are you taking off? The full year
Will you return? No I don't think so, to have 2 kids in daycare will be my entire wage so it's not worth it.  I might take in another kid to watch for some extra income if we find we need it.  I did that last time with my daughter.
What does your SO do? He is a shipper in a very large warehouse for a great company
Does your SO get any leave? technically he can take some of mine in Canada but he would lose more pay because he wouldn't get his overtime that he gets all the time so it' not worth it.  He will probably take off a week after the baby is born.  He gets 5 weeks vacation total so he will spread it out over the year.

    What's your job?
    school based speech language pathologist.
What do you like best about your job?
helping kids make progress, especially language impaired kids  or kids with autism.  Working with deaf kids is probably my very favorite--I really wish there was a deaf school locally.

    Least?
people thinking I'm a speech teacher (mainly because they discount my advice and also don't see the need to explain their perspective on things--but I've never taken education coursework, I couldn't tell you the first thing about teaching.)
also, my system has high caseloads, if it were about 20-30 students less I'd be in heaven.

    Will you have work restrictions?
    No.

Will you work until you have the baby?
thats the plan.  I might stop a few days after my EDD.  (I tend to go over by 7-10 days)
Do you get any maternity leave?
i can take up to a year but it's unpaid.  I don't have a ton of sick leave because I just started this job last fall.
How long are you taking off?
I'd like to take 12 weeks but I think I'll take 8-9. I'll have two more months to work when I return and then another 2 off for summer break.
    Will you return?
yes definitely.  I like the income (we're trying to be debt free in the next 10/15 years), I need adult interaction, and I really can't complain about a school year schedule.
    What does your SO do?
hes a outpatient clinical social worker at the VA (so he does therapy with vets)
Does your SO get any leave?
i think he just gets FMLA/PTO. He will probably take about week off and save the rest for if/when we have rough nights and one or both of us needs to stay home.

  • @loveinak  I am a SWer too and did child protection for 4.5 years. I did investigations for the last while though and that was quite the fast paced job. I loved every second of it though and miss it a lot. I started my own mental health care home for a change of pace and the ability to be home with kids. Your job sounds great though I always loved working with youth!

  • Hi ladies!

What's your job? I manage a category for a large ecommerce site's UK location.
What do you like best about your job?
I have great coworkers and my boss and his manager are literally the most supportive people ever. They let me spend loads of time working in the US during my moms illness and I am so appreciative. Though my boss might fall off his chair when he finds out I'm pregnant. He's very family focuses though so I think he'll be supportive! It's also a job where I am NEVER bored and always learning.
    Least?
I have to have some really annoying conversations with external parties, which occasionally make me really mad.
Will you have work restrictions? None, though I occasionally travel so that will have to stop at a certain point.
Will you work until you have the baby?Yup, I'd like to work as long as possible.
Do you get any maternity leave? Yup, I get 16 weeks fully paid and then can take up to a year off on statutory pay, which is like £600 ($950) a month. My job then let's me transition back to work over a two month period.
How long are you taking off?  I plan on taking six to seven months off. I earn a lot more than my husband (though he just got a job with a big raise- yay!) so without my income things will be a bit tight.
Will you return? I 100% plan to.
What does your SO do?  He's a content manager for a tech start up. He used to be a journalist so this is a relatively new career for him.
Does your SO get any leave? He'll get two weeks off. Though we can legally split my year maternity leave so that's an option after my 6/7 months.

  • What's your job?
I sell seafood for a smaller company owned by a much larger global seafood company
What do you like best about your job? Least?
I love that my commute is about 2 minutes and I've become good friends with a lot of the people i work with. Least is that since switching from inventory to sales I have a lot more "downtime" and I have a hard time not being crazy busy.
    Will you have work restrictions?
    No
Will you work until you have the baby?
    That's the plan!
Do you get any maternity leave?
I believe I get a few weeks full pay from the company based on years employed but after that it's FMLA
How long are you taking off?
I would like to take a full 12 weeks.
    Will you return?
Yes! I'm hoping to work from home a couple days a week. I'm the youngest salesperson and since it's a male dominated industry I'm also the only salesperson to ever get pregnant so I'm hoping to use that to my advantage. We have regional sales team members that work from home always so why couldn't I get a few days even if I'm local :) Fingers crossed for my talk with the boss....
    What does your SO do?
He's a foreman for a utility company. He installs gas mains and connects people's houses to the main lines in the street.
Does your SO get any leave?
It's still up in the air. They work a lot in the shop in winter since the ground is frozen and they can't dig so I think he will get at least a week. His boss seemed much more willing to give him time off as long as it wasn't in "peak season" Cheers to a winter baby i suppose!

What's your job? I work for a county

What do you like best about your job? I love the people I work with and the challenge of my job. I like helping people, even if they don't feel I'm helping.
    Least?
They don't always feel I'm helping. Not really well liked (jobwise, not personally). I get tired of people sometimes.

Will you have work restrictions? Yes

Will you work until you have the baby? Yes. As long as I possibly can.

Do you get any maternity leave? A month

How long are you taking off? 3 months with FMLA/PTO.

Will you return? Yes. I love my job 90% of the time. Plus I agree with @aishmc that I need a separate identity.

What does your SO do? Programming engineer or something (something fancy with computers that I don't understand)

Does your SO get any leave? No idea. He hasn't looked into it yet. Plus he can WFH when he wants, so he'll be around regardless.
  • What's your job? I work at a winery on the the production side.
What do you like best about your job?  I like the people I work with immediately and enjoy the mix of art and science.  I really enjoy wine making when I'm not nauseated 24/7.
Least? I dislike some of the office politics and pettiness from people who work here.  Also, harvest hours can be long and draining.
Will you have work restrictions? Not really.
Will you work until you have the baby? I plan on it.  With DS I worked up until one day before I gave birth.
Do you get any maternity leave? Yes.  I get 65% of my salary for 6 weeks and then can file for an additional 6 weeks at that rate if I want.
How long are you taking off? Probably 8 weeks.  That's how much I took off with DS.  I can bring the baby to work with me for a couple months when I return, which is really nice.
Will you return? Yep.  We cannot afford to live off one salary.
What does your SO do? He also works at a winery in production.
Does your SO get any leave? If he wants.  Last time he just used sick leave to make long weekends during my maternity leave.  It worked out really well so we'll probably do that again.

What's your job? Graduate student working towards my Ph.D.
What do you like best about your job? My mentor gives me a huge amount of intellectual freedom, which is very important to me.  Least? I get paid peanuts. Whomp whomp whomp.
Will you have work restrictions? Already do. I can't work with certain chemicals around the lab.
Will you work until you have the baby? We get about a week and a half off from Christmas to New Year's (including the weekends), so I'm hoping to just ride that out since I'm due on the 4th.
Do you get any maternity leave? 6 weeks paid
How long are you taking off? 6 weeks
Will you return? Most likely. I love what I do. But because I get paid so very little, I'm definitely keeping my mind open.
What does your SO do? IT Director by day, professional musician by night.
Does your SO get any leave? Two weeks from the Day job, and he sets his schedule for the music gigs, so it'll just depend on what is needed.

  • What's your job?
    I'm an IT Business Analyst

What do you like best about your job? Least?
    Best: I work from home!
Least: Travel.  My contract says up to 25% travel, but my boss isn't pushing for that much anymore.  I used to love travelling for business, but now that I have my daughter it just stinks.

    Will you have work restrictions?
    Nope, none for me.

Will you work until you have the baby?
Yes.  I did last time and it was fine because I was WFH.

Do you get any maternity leave?
Nope, nothing paid.  Technically I'm not even covered for FMLA because I don't work within 75 miles of 50+ employees of my company, but they covered me last time.  I'm taking more than the 12 weeks, though, so it won't really matter I guess.

How long are you taking off?
Hopefully 6 months (24 weeks), then I'll take a few short-weeks (3 days instead of 5) to ease back in. I still have to run all of this by my boss and HR   I've been saving money from every paycheck since I got back to work after having my daughter so I could afford a longer leave.  I took 14 weeks with her and I wanted more.

    Will you return?
    Yes

    What does your SO do?
    He works for Verizon Wireless

Does your SO get any leave?
I think he does - he sent me something a while back about Verizon adding paternity leave to their benefit offering, but I can't remember the details right now.  Last time he took 2 weeks (10 days) and he plans to again this time.

  • What's your job?
I'm a digital collections specialist at an academic library.

What do you like best about your job? Least?
I love seeing all the old artifacts and listening all the oral history interviews that we do here. Least favorite thing would be working with our crotchety old IT guy (sorry to all the IT ladies here, no offense to you).

    Will you have work restrictions?
    I can't think of any.

Will you work until you have the baby?
Probably. I need to save my leave until after the birth.

Do you get any maternity leave?
Technically no. I'll be using sick leave and annual leave, and then unpaid FMLA for anything beyond that.

How long are you taking off?
I'm going to have about 20 days of paid leave by January, which will mean I'll get paid for all of February, and then maybe I'll take another 2 to 4 weeks of unpaid. So altogether, 6 to 8 weeks off, depending on how much we can save in between now and January.

    Will you return?
Yep! I like this job and I like this salary.

    What does your SO do?
    DH is an airline fueler.

Does your SO get any leave?
I think he gets a week of combined PTO. That's it. Only a week.

What's your job? HR Manager for a global Mining company
What do you like best about your job? Least? Most - it's dynamic, challenging, professional, and my colleagues are amazing. Least - I work for a large company, so bureaucracy can get old sometimes...and speaking of old, my 70 year-old boss needs to retire!
Will you have work restrictions? No
Will you work until you have the baby?  Our mat leave starts 2 weeks before due date
Do you get any maternity leave? I am in Canada, so by law we have 52 weeks of job protected leave. My employer tops up my salary for 19 weeks, and after that I go down to receiving only the government subsidy of ~$2200/month.
How long are you taking off? I took a full year last time. I plan to take 10 months this time if a daycare spot opens up by then - or we'll get a nanny.
Will you return? Absolutely! Housing is very expensive here, so we need two incomes.
What does your SO do? Works in Corporate Finance/Treasury in the public sector.
Does your SO get any leave? In Canada, up to 37 weeks of the leave can be shared between the two partners. So, my husband could take some but it would deduct from mine. His employer also does a top-up in addition to the government subsidy (this is not common for men!)
  • What's your job? Office Manager at a nursing home.
What do you like best about your job? Least? Most - The residents.  Least -  I've been there for four years and I learn everything I think I can learn. There's no moving up/
Will you have work restrictions? No I'm in the office all day. So I don't do anything that's heavy lifted or anything that requires work restrictions.
Will you work until you have the baby?  Out of the three kids. I only work full time with the youngest and I work till the day before I gave birth.
Do you get any maternity leave? I can get up to 12 weeks.
How long are you taking off? I'm only taking six weeks.
Will you return? Absolutely! Unless, I get a new job which is the plan.
What does your SO do? Works in private ambulance company.
Does your SO get any leave? Yes, he get's Family Leave up to 12 weeks. He probably only takes two weeks. Since he only works twice a week 24 hour shift he doesn't need to take a lot of time off.

  • What's your job? I'm a scientist at a technical (engineering and science) consulting firm

What do you like best about your job? Least? I like the fast paced environment and the constant opportunities to learn with each new project. I dislike some of the drama and short deadlines that can be involved in consulting.

Will you have work restrictions? Not really, since most of my work is at the computer or some light lab work.

Will you work until you have the baby? We need to take one week off before short term disability kicks in.

Do you get any maternity leave? I get 12 weeks from FMLA and short term disability, and can use an additional 4 weeks of vacation+sick sick time to increase my leave

How long are you taking off? As much as possible! The full 16 weeks

Will you return? Yes, we live in an expensive state to it's hard to make do with just one income. I'm looking into my company's part time and hourly options, at least as a transition period

What does your SO do? He's a data scientist

Does your SO get any leave? We're not sure, he just started a new job last week. Hopefully he can at least use some vacation time! We might also look into taking FMLA for him. We live in California so it is partly paid, thank goodness.
