I exclusively pump for my 5 month old daughter but I've had three cases of mastitis since I've started twice on the same breast and a ton of milk blisters on the same breast that has suffered mastitis twice. I can't keep going through this pain and I have a great supply frozen so I'm in the process of weaning myself off my pump. What I'm doing so far is using cabbage all hours of the day and when I just am absolutely in pain I pump 4 oz out of each breast instead of my normal 5/6 ounces. also trying to go as long as possible between those pumping sessions. Plan on doing 4 oz for few days then cutting back to 3 oz and so on till either I'm barely getting anything or having to cut out sessions. Any other tips or tricks you mommy's have found or done would be greatly appreciated to hear them. I wish this process was so much easier and I'd love to keep going but I can't continue to put myself through mastitis over and over again going to urgent care for antibiotics especially with my husband being busy with work etc I do the majority of babycare and it is so hard to care for a baby when your going through mastitis you have absolutely no energy and the chills and fever and pain is terrible. Heres to hoping my supply dwindles really fast and my boobs understand what I'm trying to do and catch on real quick to slow production!
Re: Weaning
I myself am starting weaning from the pump I have found this lady to have suggestions that seem to make the most sense to me. It isn't an overnight process though looks like the only way to avoid extreme discomfort or possibly mastitis is to let the process take a couple weeks.
I'm currently at 5-7 hours between but I also pump 6-9 ounces per side. Now that it's warmer out it is easier to stretch out my sessions. I found when I was cold I was uncomfortable like I needed to pump sooner. Good luck mama! And good for you for keeping at it this long!
