baby can't drink water

My baby won't drink water. I'm not sure if it's that he's resistant to the taste or if it's just that he has a hard time understanding how to get it from the sippy cup. We've tried several different cups and he won't drink from any of them. He just kind of chews on it for a second and then gets frustrated. Should I just try putting it in a bottle or will that cause too many problems down the line? I don't want to give him juice but I've heard about people infusing the water with fruit to give it a sweeter taste. I should also mention that my baby doesn't like pacifiers and will only take bottles if he absolutely has to (aka only when I'm at work or if my husband does it when I'm not around). His diapers aren't as wet as they used to be and I'm getting worried.

Does he ever reach for the glass when he sees you drinking water? My baby's favorite way to drink water is from whatever receptacle I am drinking out of, be it a cup or my bottle of water. He will take it from a sippy cup too though, so maybe its not the same, but he is super enthusiastic about drinking like we do, from the same cups, so maybe you could try that? Good luck!

Check with his ped about how many wet diapers per day they consider normal.  My LO was violently belly sick over the holiday, diaper was bone dry for 5 hours, and her ped said we still had a few hours before it was worry time.  And even then, the answer was sips of breastmilk or formula or pedialyte, not water.  If he's taking in adequate BM/formula he probably doesn't need more hydration.
  • Why are you giving water, if he is sick contact his pedi. If he is having wet diapers, even if not as full, means he is still pretty hydrated. My son had a stomach virus a month ago was refusing to nurse and did not have a wet diper for 8 hrs, we were directed to give pedialyte.
  • I don't quite understand the insistence on water.  I do get that you're trying to get your little one to drink out of a sippy cup though.  It's a completely different mouth and tongue motion than drinking out of a bottle and so they're going to have trouble with it at first.  To make it more appealing, take water out of the equation.  Add breast milk to the sippy cup and have LO start off with a drink you know they enjoy.  If you're still worried about dehydration, speak to your doctor about whether adding additional water, juice or pedialyte to LO's diet would be helpful.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • Water is recommended once you start solids if your baby has harder stool but not necessary. You can out formula or breastmilk in a sippy and try that.
  • We tried several different sippy cups and this is the only one my LO would drink out off. It's expensive but LO will be able to use it for a long time. He can even pick it up and drink from it all by himself.

  • Thanks, everyone! This past month, our pediatrician said he should start having water after his solid food meals. Since he started eating 3 meals a day as his appetite for solid food has increased, his BM meals have gone from 6 a day to 5 a day. That's why I was concerned about maybe needing to add more liquid into his diet. I'm glad to hear water isn't essential to hydration for him at this point. I'll try BM in the sippy cups, for sure. For anyone else having this problem, his teacher at daycare also suggested putting a cucumber in the pacifier made for food so he can get water out of that and also get used to sucking on something since he doesn't like pacifiers.

My LO isn't a fan of sippy cups or bottles but he likes straws so I have a reusable straw and I use that for juice or water and he loves it. He will chew on the bottle or sippy cups and try and drink from it but it's more a toy to him than anything
  • We have the Avent Natural training cup.  DS drinks from it and likes to play with it.  LO also drinks water after each solid meal.
