Quick Questions (June)

Hi All!

I thought it might be nice to start a "Quick Question" thread. A place to shoot off a question you anticipate will have a straight-forward answer. Sometimes those questions get a little lost in the randoms thread, but they don't seem important enough to start a thread of their own, so leave 'em here. (I.e. Does my SO have to get a TDAP vaccine if this is my second child? Am I supposed to fast before my GD test? Etc)

Of course big questions that will likely start a debate can and should have their own thread (i.e. circumcision, med/med free births etc.)

Is it possible to sit in a certain position (with my legs lightly pressed against my stomach) and it crowd the baby? I've noticed he kicks harder when I sit on the couch with my legs/thighs up and pushing on my stomach...I imagine him pushing back like "mom, give me my space!" Plus I worry I'm going to hurt him... I prefer sitting kinda like this but knees further apart cause, you know, there's a tummy there now and without the pained look on my face.

ETA: stupid bump ate my post! If he starts kicking hard I usually move my legs and he quiets down.

Also, he's got so much protection in there...shouldn't this NOT affect him?

  • @ajn092 It is my understanding that even sitting with your belly touching your legs, there is plenty of room in your uterus for the baby. I feel kicks more then, too, but I think it's likely because more of you is in contact with the impact zones.  Your OB can confirm if you're really concerned, but unless you have a uterine growth restriction (a specific diagnosable thing, not just you sitting all squishy! ) you should be all right!

BTDT cloth diapering moms: If I buy an "all in one" or "all in 2" diaper, does that mean I have to wash the WHOLE diaper every time? Pictures online don't show me the inside of the diaper so I don't know what it looks like up in there, but I think those ones get the pee/poo directly on the diaper and the whole thing needs washing. I don't want to have to wash the whole diaper each time, because then I'd need like 15 x $25 each. I'm thinking of using diaper covers and then inserts, and you'd wash the insert each time and the cover when necessary, correct?

All in one, yes because everything is attached. All in two, I reuse the cover for pee and wash for poop. With covers and prefolds, same.

@PSUBecky23 thank you! Way too many confusing names for cloth diapers.  There are no stores nearby that sell them so I have to look online which is tricky

You got your answer, but I just wanted to ask if you're planning on diapering from NB? Just because with 15 diapers you're going to be doing laundry pretty much every day. We're doing prefolds/covers for the most part and we're hoping to do every other day laundry, so we have about 30 prefolds and 6 covers.

  • @ajn092 I definitely notice a difference in baby's movement in certain positions. It was the same with my last pregnancy. For example, often when DD rests her head on my belly, baby will slowly start to "push back" on her. I don't think baby is crowded or anything; merely just responding to feeling. I notice the same types of "responses" when I sit in certain positions or if I hunch over for something...baby will almost spread out (or at least that's what it feels like).

We are doing disposable for the first bit (probably month) but even if we were doing the more expensive all in ones, we would buy extra of the prefolds cause they're cheaper to make up the extra diapers so we don't have to do laundry every day.

  • @RedMar I haven't tried it, but it is what I ordered through my insurance for this time around. I have a medela that I used w/DS and wanted something more hands free. A classmate from my HS raves about her's on facebook and that's how I found out about it.
  • This is something I also plan to ask my doctor, but BTDT moms might have insight too...

What pain meds were you allowed to take post-partum? Was it awful to deal with or was Tylenol/ibprofen enough to curb the pain? And were those even allowed if you're breastfeeding?

I'm imagining the post-partum pain to be worse than labor. I can tolerate intense pain when I know it's going to be over (like getting teeth drilled without Novocain), but I can't stand that lingering achy pain that just draaaags.
  • @PoodleDoodleOoo I was given ibuprofen once my epi wore off and was pretty comfortable while at the hospital (probably tmi but I had a 2nd degree tear). I continued with the ibuprofen as needed while at home and only got uncomfortable if I tried to carry the carseat for too long or went on a really long walk (all things I probably shouldn't have been doing anyways).
  • I had a c-section, so I likely had more pain meds than a vaginal delivery. But I alternated between percocet and 800mg of ibuprofen for the first few days. I was better able to be in the moment when I wasn't in pain, though I stopped taking the percocet shortly after I got home from the hospital (again, to better be in the moment). Ibuprofen seems to have a compounding effect at higher doses, it really did handle most of my pain. If you end up with surgery I definitely recommend staying on top of your meds, it SUCKS when it starts to hurt again and can take a little while for pain relief to kick in. I had some awful nurses who were too busy drop off my ibuprofen (like I wouldn't get to take it for 2+ hours after I was "scheduled" to have it and my husband had to harass the front desk). I get that it's busy, but that was pretty rough. Anyway, none of it seemed to affect baby or breastfeeding negatively.
  • @PoodleDoodleOoo - I had a vaginal birth and took nothing for pain afterwards. I would get some uterine cramping while breastfeeding, which triggers things to contract and shrink back up. With each bathroom trip I'd spray the external area with numbing spray. I remember having to stand up a bit carefully for a few days but overall bounced back very quickly.

My sister had a C-section and was prescribed percocet (oxycodone and acetaminophen) to use at home after but found that she was ok with just some Tylenol.

  • @PoodleDoodleOoo I had a 2nd degree tear and like you, could handle the labor pain fine, I just don't handle the after pain well. I hate having stitches and I'm very paranoid that they will rip out. Plus you never know when the pain will end. I was given ibuprophen and Percocet, and both are fine while nursing. I only took the Percocet one day, i was hurting really bad and throbbing. I never needed it again after that one time.
  • @PoodleDoodleOoo I had a c-section and my IV came out before getting more than a few hours of pain meds. I was 'okay' with Tylenol and Advil piggie backed (okay enough to not want the IV back in), and I was breastfeeding with no worries about the meds.

  • I am scheduled to do my GD test next week and am headed into the office afterwards. Clinic told me the appointment would take 2 hours and I had to fast after midnight.

My question is this: will I feel ok to go to work afterwards? I assume each person is different but I hear stories of women crashing, feeling horrible, having to nap, etc afterwards and am wondering if I need to rethink my work day following my appointment.
  • @geminigirl16  Yeah, everyone is different. My SIL almost passed out and ended up throwing up and having to redo the test another day. She actually ended up having GD so that's probably why. I on the other hand felt completely fine and went to work after. There's really no way to tell, unfortunately.
  • Along pain pills, how often can you take Tylenol while pregnant? I'm having severe chest pains that are spreading to my back and stemming from my shoulder. I got checked out and it's just muscle pain but it is hard to breathe and the pain is unbearable. The OB said Extra Strength Tylenol is okay, sparingly, but in between the huffing and puffing and the tears, I didn't really ask what sparingly is or how often while pregnant. I took some last night and again today and I'm hoping tomorrow will be the last day I may need them so it'd be only for a couple days. Ok to take 4 a day or the regular dosage?

For reference, the only time I've felt such intense pain was the day after surgery when I woke up and my meds had worn off.

  • I also had a C-section as was given morphine the first day and tapered off to 800mg Motrin and Percocet.  Staying ahead of the pain is key for sure!  Once I got home, I wanted to be more in the moment so I stopped taking the percs and stuck with Motrin.  Until my milk came in, and went back to cabbage leaves and percs to dry that crap up.  I swear that hurt more than recovering from surgery.

  • @poodledoodleooo vaginal delivery with tearing. Took 600mg ibuprofen for a week or so and sprayed with dermaplast. Pain was more soreness than intense and it was pretty well controlled.

I was prescribed Tylenol and Tramadol after my appendix surgery (Tramadol has Tylenol in it). I was taking A TON so I think you will be okay. Starting after my surgery, I took 2 Tramadol every 4 hours. Then after about 3 days, I alternated 2 regular strength Tylenol and then 2 Tramadol every 4 hours. I did this for about 2 days. Then for a couple days, just 2 regular strength Tylenol every 6 or so hours.

Edited to add this: Obviously in my situation, the doctors believed the benefit of taking all that medication outweighed the risk of the mediation because I was in a lot of pain. I trust their judgement on how much I could take. I even have 10 Tramadol left that I weaned off of because I didn't feel comfortable taking too much. But I think it goes to show how much you COULD take if there was a benefit to it.

  • Were any of you actually seeing body parts (feet or hands) through your stomach towards the end of pregnancy? I have heard this can happen and I think it is SO cool! If you did, at what week did it start to happen?
  • @geminigirl16 - After my 1 hour test, I felt completely normal. After my 3 hour test I felt ok until I was driving home and got very woozy. I completely forgot to bring a snack... So bring one!  Most feel ok after, but you'll have to see for yourself. Definitely a granola bar or something of substance to help level you back out after fasting, a quick rise and drop in blood sugar.

@Sbrown721 - Yes to body parts.. clearly elbows and even a little foot once or twice. All maybe 30+ weeks

  • @Sbrown721 I never saw any identifiable body parts with DD, even at the end.  There were definitely times my belly would visibly move (not just a wobble, but a complete lop-sidedness) and that has started again.  I could press in on the "lump" and gauge what body part it might be based on how it felt but can't say I was ever accurate in saying, "This is a foot."  My theory is that there are way too many layers of skin/tissue/muscle/etc between baby and the outside world - even if he/she perfectly stamped your belly, it would just look like a bulge, not a foot.

  • @sbrown721 there were lumps and bumps that would poke out from various body parts but I couldn't tell you what body part it actually was.

  • @RG1 thanks so much! I'm beyond sure your situation was 10x more painful but it does help get some perspective. The doctor wants me to take Tylenol because of the stress the pain causes being so severe (can barely move, had very high BP and was in tears) so I'm trying to hold off until I get to that 'I just can't do this anymore'. With it being so strong, I reach that point quickly so I think I'll be taking two doses throughout the day today.

This. People kept telling me I'd eventually see a hand or foot poking out, but I never could dustinguish anything. I have had a dream I could clearly see this one's hands through my belly. I feel her so much more that I'm hoping it actual does happen with her.

Re pain postpartum: I had a vaginal birth with very little tearing. I took Advil for maybe a week. I used it as a preemptive measure, and not because I was feeling extremely pained.

@AlwaysAuntNeverMom The maximum of Tylenol that should be taken each day is 4grams, or 4000mg. Regular strength Tylenol is usually 500mg, extra strength is 1000mg. Unless you have any pre-existing liver disease (which is where Tylenol is metabolized), 4 extra strength tablets (at 1000mg each) should be fine, but go with your doctors recommendation if she's told you to take less. Tylenol can be very toxic to the liver if you take too much. Normally I would say don't drink while taking Tylenol regularly but that's not really an issue for you ;)

Yes I forgot to mention this. That is why I had to take 2 regular strength instead of extra strength because there was tylenol in the tramadol so there was a limit to how much I could take each day

  • Regarding pain meds:

I had a c-section, after my spinal wore off I was given norco and Motrin. When I found out that my home prescription was going to be for Tylenol with codeine and not the norco that had been managing my pain, I requested that we switch to the planned rx to see how I tolerated it. I'm so glad I did that because it was not enough. I had crippling pain. My OB added flexeril to the mix and I was totally functional. PP I used the meds and refilled but never required an additional prescription from my OB.

    Regarding body parts:

I never saw that obvious hand or foot that you see on Pinterest but towards the end, 35w+, it was obvious that his butt was poking right below my ribs and his thigh stretched across my abdomen.

  • Re PP pain.
My nurse the first night was the worst! I guess she personally didn't believe I should have oxycodone. When I asked for pain medication I was only offered ibuprofen or Tylenol so I had to do Tylenol due to stomach ulcers. And I was dying! I almost passed out when I went to pee. Then the AM nurse was like WTAF? Is there a reason you only want Tylenol? Nope! Gimme the good stuff!!!

Just to to warn y'all the first PP BM was the most painful part of birth to me. Wish I had an epi for that

Nooo! Did you take stool softener? Definitely take them next time if you didn't last time! I was terrified to poop but they gave me stool softener starting as soon as I got in my regular room and it wasn't bad at all!
  • I was going to say the same as @MrsVoorhees. Everyone had me so scared about the first BM, but it wasn't bad at all. I took the stool softeners, so maybe that's why?

I BMed so much during labor that I didn't need to for a couple days. Everyone who's afraid of pooing, get over it. Nurse and docs see it on the reg. However, I was terrified to go PP. With hardcore pain meds, they tend to constipate you and that was the main reason I didn't want to take them. I may have had a Tylenol here and there, but otherwise the pain was pretty manageable. I do recommend stocking up on Colace bc I was taking that as a proactive measure. In case constipation did arise, I was scared I would blow out my stitches.
  • I had to poop as on as I got into my room PP. I looked at my husband with absolute fear in my eyes and he asked what was wrong, and I said, "oh God, I need to poop." Hahaha I was so scared but it was fine with the stool softeners. The bad part was I didn't know how to clean myself since I tore and it was the first bathroom thing I had done after delivery. So I just sat in there and then the nurse came in and sprayed me down...seriously, no dignity. Lol
