Gestational Diabetes Support

Re: Gestational Diabetes Support

  • Welp... got my diagnosis today... and so far it feels something akin to AA.

Hi. My name is Miranda. And I'm a Gestational Diabetic.

Not really much to report so far... had my 3 hour GTT on Friday and got the results from the lab later that night. My first and final readings were fine, but the middle two were high. Proactively made up a healthy low carb menu, got back to my walking routine, and called the Dr's office Monday to see what the next steps were.

Got a call back from the Dr's office today, and they said I should schedule a GD class with one of the local hospitals and I will need to see the GD Specialist at the other office location. Ok, no biggie... the nurse said she would let the GD Specialist know and that I would be getting a phone call. So I called the Hospital to find out more about the class and the lady was quite patronizing because my Dr hadn't sent over orders yet.... ok... thanks lady... not like I'm super bummed about this and feel like I've somehow failed or anything... the attitude is VERY helpful.

So now I've just decided to keep up with my meal plan, and food/exercise log and wait until I hear from the Dr's office. I have an OB check up next week, so if that's the earliest I hear it's not a big deal.

Such a freaking bummer though... the news combined with soaring hormones right now, have me sneaking off to the bathroom at work to cry a lot. I know it's manageable and I know it's only 10 more weeks... but everything has been so normal so far. No MS, no weight gain, no problems!! Just gotta hike up my big girl panties and deal with it. I'll celebrate our LO's arrival with the Girl Scout Cookies I ordered but can't eat now...

  • @allaire314, hang in there! Do what you can for now and don't worry too much. Do you know how high your readings were? (Like, super high vs just over the threshold?)

I've been monitoring my blood sugar since Friday night and haven't had any results anywhere close to the 120 threshold, despite having some sweets in moderation here and there. So I wouldn't give up all hope of eating your girl scout cookies before baby arrives :)

  • I have my 3 hr test in the morning. Honestly, by the amount I failed the 1 hr test, the odds are not in my favor. I eat a low carb diet as it is (no grains, no dairy, no sugar) so I'm worried about putting additional restrictions on my self. My midwife was shocked by how high my 1 hr numbers were and that's putting a lot of pressure on me.

At least your doctor has contacted you. Mine hasn't said a single thing to me about failing my 3 hour test yet. The only reason I know the results are because the lab sent me the results via email. I can only imagine she just thinks that there isn't anything she can do for me until she sees me again, which is Thursday. I've already switched over to a low carb low sugar diet to prepare myself.

  • Ack...! I found out yesterday afternoon I failed the 1-hour test. It's got me all nervous. Like a lot of you, I have none of the "risk factors," so this is a surprise to me. My midwife suggested I not abstain from sugar and carbs in the few days before the 3-hour and that I even carbo-load a little bit in the days beforehand. I'm thinking I'll do the test Friday.  :/

What a bummer for those who have it. I'll keep my eye on this thread and I'll join in again if I fail my 3-hour.

Im also annoyed with myself because "get more life insurance" has been on my to-do list for months, and now I'm worried a bad diagnosis could make that more expensive, on top of freaking me out a bit for the next 11 weeks. Ugh.
  • @AEG84
My base was fine at 81 supposed to be <91
60min was really high at 217 supposed to be <179
120min was not as bad at 171 supposed to be <152
and final was totally good at 107 supposed to be <140

About 30-40 min into the test I had such a headache and I was overheated and just generally uncomfortable. Baby didn't move hardly at all the whole time which surprised me and the nurses. Then the last 15 minutes or so I just wanted to be done and was really tired of sitting.
  • I had my first meeting with the nutritionist yesterday to get my glucose meter.  I was all ready to launch into my Paleo/Whole 30 diet and the nutritionist was really insistent that I make sure to get in at least 50 g of carbs at lunch and dinner and 30 at breakfast, along with 3 snacks.  I picked up some sushi for lunch, which I wouldn't normally do on paleo, but the package said 24g of carbs.  My 2 hour post lunch sugar was 182! yikes.  Turns out the carb count was for 3 pieces, not the whole package. (Doh! I know better than to make a stupid mistake like that).  My dinner numbers were great, but my fasting numbers this morning were high.  I had greek yogurt and 2 slices of mango for my nighttime snack.  I'm guessing the fruit has got to go.  Boo.  I've really been craving fruit lately.  I hope all of you are having no problem controlling this with diet!
  • I thought I'd pull this back up as we are probably all starting to take our two hour after pregnancy tolerance test. That's where I am right now... We'll see.
  • I did mine in Tuesday. I am in the clear!
  • Yippee! I'm so happy for you!
