Your favorite books for children

What are your favorite books for kids? Either books you remember loving as a child, or books for kids you've since discovered.

I want to keep a wishlist and start collecting some good ones for our little home library. My son will be learning and speaking mostly Dutch outside our home, and my partner is not a native English speaker, so I'll be representing the English language. :) We've started reading him bedtime stories already, and I only have 2 books in English so far. Need more.

Some of my favorites as a kid:
The Rough-Faced Girl
Tikki Tikki Tembo
Danny and the Dinosaur
Little Critter

Re: Your favorite books for children

  • Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
    Most things by Dr. Seuss
We have some animal books that also make noise

  • Ahhh!!! I love children's books! This is such a good thread idea! I babysat for a little guy who was Swedish/English bilingual. He was under 2 and would bring me the English books, not the Swedish ones!

Sandra Boynton (the going to bed book; moo, ba, la la la; but not the hippopotamus)
Eric Carle (Brown bear, hungry caterpillar)
    Madeline
    Llama llama books
    The Runway Bunny
The Real Mother Goose (just a collection of nursery rhymes--my dad read us a few each night and I memorized them and would repeat them when I was scared/needed to calm down)
    Leo the Late Bloomer
    Gregory the Terrible Eater
Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day
    Scaredy Squirrel
    Charlie and Lola books
    The Paperbag Princess
    All of Jan Brett's fairytales
    Corduroy
    A Chair for my Mother
    Make Way for Ducklings
    Miss Rumphius
