I like it. I actually have a male relative Sidney and a female cousin Sydney. Personally Sid on a boy makes me think of the awful kid from Toy Story, so I prefer the feminine.
I've known two: one was a bartender at a restaurant where I worked after college. She would easily be in her 70s by now. The other is in 8th grade and is the older sister of a classmate of my son's.
I like it a lot, and it's a family name for us (my 100 year old great great uncle!). Check regional popularity because I think it was very very popular in NYC last I checked.
I personally have pretty negative connotations with it. The most annoying student I've ever had was named Sydney, and a friend of mine married a Sidney (male) and had a daughter that they named Sydney because, and I quote "he didn't get a boy to name after himself." For whatever reason, that just makes me cringe.
I also think of the turd bucket kid from Toy Story.
I love Sydney for a girl! Chances are, she won't see Scream for a while, and if you tried to avoid names that have been in a movie before...you'd be down to NOTHING. Good Luck!
Re: Thoughts on this name?
I prefer Sidney as a masculine name.
