I want crab legs soooo bad I could cry. I've always loved them, but have never wanted them this bad. And I'm pretty sure crab is safe to eat, but my husband is being extra paranoid and says "I can wait 7 more months just to be safe."
@cjs260 yes i've heard the same thing about hot dogs... it's ok if they are heated thoroughly... I'm the same way... I will eat them at home right off the grill. I've also read to make sure they are nitrate free.
I, shockingly, wasn't missing wine that much until I was out to dinner and the woman next to me ordered a glass and I could smell it.
I miss coffee as well. I cut out regular coffee completely because I didn't want to worry about how many ounces I was drinking, etc. For me personally, it's just easier to go cold turkey. I did have a cup of decaf the other morning when I was feeling particularly exhausted and was hoping for a little placebo effect. It didn't work I might have a random decaf every now and then, but not often.
I want a nice cup of piping hot, strong, black, English Breakfast tea. Tea time in the mornings is my peaceful, relaxing time that I look forward to every day. With my first pregnancy, my midwife told me that a cup of tea is perfectly safe, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm much to scared to consume any caffeine, however small the amount. I'd rather not risk it. So as with the birth of our first, I will be requesting a cup after this one is born.
I told my MIL today that I've cut back to one 8oz cup of coffee now that I'm pregnant (we told her already) and she said, "You shouldn't be drinking any coffee, I gave up all caffeine completely when I was pregnant with all 3 of my kids because it's just not worth it. I loved coffee, but it's only 9 months." ....I was like, "it's safe to have one cup. I'm having one cup." then later saw me eating canned tuna (which is safe to have one serving a week) and said, "I don't think you can eat that!" She knows I'm the type to research everything, so I don't even know why she's second guessing me, but I feel like if the baby is at all hyperactive or has any delays, disorders, behavioral issues, etc, she's going to be like, "SEE! It was the coffee!!" .....even though we all know a perfect pregnancy does not equal perfect human being.
Wine. I really, really miss wine. I'm so happy to hear you guys can relate! I had a friend pregnancy shame me and say she never craved alcohol (which is such a lie)!
Also I want everything from the deli. Especially potato salad. Funny OP mentioned Wegmans. I was standing in front of the potato salad looking so sad the other day. I'm just too tired to make my own right now.
Coffee! With my first I probably only had coffee five or six times, I have already had that much this time at 7 weeks. I used to have about 4 cups a day, so I figured 3 or 4 a week is pretty good. And wine, I dumped put a half bottle that has been in the fridge since my BFP. It was taunting me :-)
I feel like in general this thread would be a good place to plug Emily Oster's book Expecting Better. She crunched the numbers on a LOT of the studies about issues that pertain to pregnancy and presents the data in a really easily digestible way. She talks a lot about the fact that a lot of recommendations these days come from a lack of evidence and a "better safe than sorry" approach. Her section on alcohol and coffee consumption during pregnancy looks at the studies that make the recommendations, analyzes their methodology, and points out confounding variables. She also talks about the various foods that are off limits and what the actual reasons (or lack thereof) are behind, say, sushi or turkey slices.
It's not just about foods, it also looks at things like "let's do a meta analysis of every study about epidurals". I just have only really found the info about food to be relevant so far. I'm sure other sections will prove useful as I get further along.
I've never heard that hot dogs are of limits, and in going to pretend I still don't know. Can't beat a dog off the grill...yum!
Sushi is one thing I really really want. I might break that rule though if it's at a nice place made fresh. My Dr said no to even the rolls with no raw fish!
Wine! The first week hubby and I found out was so emotionally draining ( had other life issues going on as well) by the weekend was dying for a cold glass! Doesn't help I had to sit next to hubby and watch him enjoy his beer... At least I'm not alone!
I'd really take any type of alcohol at this point! Wine, margarita, beer - whatever! I just miss having a casual drink on the weekend after a long/stressful week at work. Sigh...
I could really go for a beer! Tomorrow I'm gonna go buy myself some ginger beer. Maybe drinking out of the bottle will make me think I'm drinking real beer. Plus it will be good to have on hand in case I start feeling queasy.

Aside from wine/alcohol which is a clear no-go, I kind of agree with @emilyn2012 -- if you want it, eat it. Moderation is the key, as well as location. I've lost count of all the things I've had that are supposedly "don't do it!"s just because of where I was getting them (i.e. poached egg at a 3-star Michelin restaurant, locally sourced salmon in northern Europe that wasn't farmed). But probably not going to eat the 7/11 camembert. I just remind myself that every year millions of babies around the world are born completely healthy to people who don't do the level of research on all of this stuff that we do
I would like an Italian sub and a bottle of Riesling as soon as this baby enters this world!!!
I also plan on having a hot dog this weekend as my friends will be cooking it although the hubby seems paranoid about everything...he just made me an egg sandwich as I am 7 weeks along and just read to him that the baby is growing a hundred brain cells per minute and he thinks eggs will make the baby smarter, he's so cute
I agree with @canavara - moderation is key! Although with my first I was pretty cautious and avoided soft cheeses, deli meat, caffeine, etc. Ate a ton of hot dogs off our grill though.
This time around I'm just avoiding alcohol and sushi (I can't bring myself to eat it). I ordered a Greek salad at dinner 2 weeks after my bfp and was about halfway through it when I was like "oh sh!t am I not supposed to eat this? ". And I'm fighting the deli meat thing every day bc one of my major craving right now is fresh prosciutto. Omg would kill for a fresh mozz, prosciutto, red pepper sandwich, but don't want to heat the meat up so waiting on that one.
Although realistically right now I'm puking everything up / can't eat it anyway bc I'm so nauseous so it doesn't really matter lol.
My favorite meal is a grilled chicken Caesar salad with a wedge of fried Brie from a bistro down the road from us!! Arghhhhh I know I could get away with the Brie but not the salad... I joked with my mom we might be eating that meal around December 26th hahaha!!
also, Dr Pepper.. I'm doing no caffeine and haven't had a sip of Dr Pepper in 6 weeks! I found caffeine free at target just have to go get some.
Omg haha you're hilarious I was craving wine as well!! But the other day out of NO WHERE came this craving for a cold crisp beer. I do not drink beer ever lol but I literally went to search for some non alcoholic beer in the small shop by our house. This of course was unsuccessful. Where do they carry non alcoholic beeeeer????
depending on on where you live, but our grocery stores here in AZ also sell alcohol. During my last pregnancy all I wanted was one sip of an ice cold beer. I actually went and bought non-alcoholic beer (O'Douls) so I could help curve the craving. It was nice to have one every once in awhile when we had company over to hang out by the pool. It's an OK taste lol. I mixed it with a little OJ and it was perfect.

I want something I couldn't have at this moment even if I wasn't pregnant- a fresh corn dog from the state fair. The fair won't be here for months and even then I don't think I trust that food.
I just read this whole thread and I think it's hilarious how much hot dogs are mentioned! I know kids love them, but I've never really heard adults swoon over them, lol! I'm not disagreeing at all, though. And WHAT?! Where have I been?! I'm pretty sure Home Depot's in Indiana/Ohio don't have hot dogs! Is it like a food stand, cafe, refreshment area?! What in the world?! So great. @TinaBelcher
I feel lucky to live in Canada because all cheese bought in a grocery store is pasteurized, brie, goat etc. And I LOVE cheese so I was happy to hear it is a non-issue. I have a feeling most are in the States too...seeing we share all the same brands. It is worth looking into if you really love soft cheeses!
Honestly, the only thing I've cut back on is alcohol, and even then I've had a sip of DH's cider last week. I've been eating sushi and hot dogs and not worrying about it. Both sides of my family are from countries in Europe where one glass a week of alcohol is recommended by doctors during pregnancy. The US and it's pregnancy paranoia is really weird compared to most of the world.

@PaukMeKiande I noticed that! A waiter in a restaurant here in Denmark offered me a wine menu when we first got here a few weeks ago and I said, "No thanks, I'm currently pregnant" and he looked at me really confused and said, "So?" There's so many pregnant ladies here (there's a baby boom going on right now) and I'd say nearly half of them are drinking a glass of wine with their dinner (obviously it's hard to tell with the first trimester ladies since they're not showing but at least in 2nd/3rd trimester, they're definitely drinking)
@lindsladle15 idk where everyone else is from, but almost all of our Home Depots (Alabama) have a hotdog man/cart outside the front doors during specific times during the day. They smell amazing too, and I'm not a huge hotdog fan. I think Lowe's may have one too, or it might be the same guy. *sigh* I wish I could remember for sure.

I was coming to plug this book exactly. It's awesome and takes a lot of the fear out of pregnancy. Hobestly, there is really not all that much you can't eat if you're getting food from reputable sources. And if you're worried about listeria from deli meats, the. You're going to stop eating all the fruits and veggies bc the latest outbreaks have been in veggies. It's a lose-lose situation.
I eat soft, pasteurized (pasteurized being key). I eat sushi from restaurants I trust (pregnant Japanese women never stop eating sushi) and just watch my high in Mercury fish. I've never loved deli meats but I'd eat them (see veggie listeriosis fact). And I have the occasional half glass of wine or half beer, especially in second and third trimester.
At at the end of the day, it's such a personal decision and I understand why some don't want to take any risks. Pregnancy is scary and fraught with the unknown but I feel like there is a ton of fear mongering done in this country that terrifies women. Do what makes you comfortable. But, if you do want to look into the data, know that, unless you're smoking, not taking your prenatal, doing drugs or drinking to excess, your little one will probably be fine.
