severe back pain in spot where i had previous epidurals

I am 7 weeks pregnant... due around Jan 6th (I think.. my first appt/ultrasound is on June 1st) Anyway, for the last two weeks I have had pretty severe back pain. This is my third pregnancy. I had c-sections with both of my previous children. The pain is right in my lower middle back where I was given my epidurals. Some days it is so bad I cannot stand up straight. It's hard to sleep, to stand up off the couch, and I can't bend over. Some days it only hurts a little, and some days not at all, but keeps coming back! I am so confused. I never had this with my previous pregnancies. After having my two sons, I have noticed some back pain in my epidural spot after a long day of cleaning house and bending over, or working out... but nothing like this. I am freaking out because I am only 7 weeks and even though I know things have started spreading and stretching a LITTLE, I don't see how it could cause this. I can't imagine when I actually start growing how bad this will hurt. Has anyone ever experienced this?? Could it mean something is wrong?

Re: severe back pain in spot where i had previous epidurals

  • Back pain freaks me out with pregnancy. Call your OB. Back pain is very common, but worth checking in.

  • You need a professional to evaluate it. It may be totally unrelated to the previous epidural or your pregnancy. Call a doctor and get seen ASAP - and if you can loop in your OB as well, that would be ideal. You shouldn't live in pain!

  • thanks. I have an appt with my OB on Wednesday... but may try to get it with my regular doctor sooner. Thanks for the advice.

If your OB doesn't find anything "wrong," he or she may have a referral for a chiropractor who specializes in pregnant women.

  • I don't 5 have severe pain, but i do experience tenderness in my spine where i have had 2 epidurals. 5 years apart. After the 1st i was left with a small blue dot. Thr second time around the anesthesiologist thought it was odd. Now after the second i have a small bump that doesnt go away and tender to touch. Oh man the stuff we put ourselves through. Maybe i will push through without an epidural this 3rd time.
