Anyone spying on your registry

@SkiChic626 I think people who don't have kids yet do not understand. I shopped off registry with my sister in law and did not give gift receipts... alot of it was hand made stuff.. and I will say I thought my gifts were awesome... I'm sure they got rid of them because I have not seen those items since.. good friends of ours bought us a bean bag baby seat:

My first thought was holy shit that seems soooooo unsafe... not to mention we have to fill it( they sent us the packing peanuts). I love these friends... I want to keep it just because they are dear to us... but we have limited space and it just makes me worry about positional suffocation. I feel like an asshole for hating it. ugh.

  • Katm89 Believe it or not, it was actually a lot of the older adults.  My friends who don't have kids all bought great gifts, more than I would have ever expected them to, off of the registry.  It was some of the people our parents age, maybe slightly younger in some instances, who bought the rogue things, so it was really strange.  Like my cousin got us a beach bag and sand toys, which hey that's great....for a first birthday gift, but for my baby shower??  And that was one of my cousins who is maybe 10 years older than me and has kids so she should get it.  That was just the tip of the iceberg, there were a lot of things that were even weirder (Alvin and the Chipmunks DVDs and coloring books from one of my aunts...what the what???) and I couldn't return them because I had no idea where they even came from.

And holy heck, no way, that thing looks like a falling or suffocation accident waiting to happen!

@SkiChic626 at my work baby shower someone gave me a size 8 in pajamas... um... I am so returning that... why would I save someone like that for 5 years waiting for my kid to fit it. and yea I'm terrified of that chair.. it has an option for it just to be a bean bag which might be cute for a toddler in a reading corner but then I have to save it for 2 years and we have a 5 foot box full of packing peanuts....
  • My MIL is coming to visit and I'm wondering what she might bring for the baby. She tends to get gifts off QVC that are big and take up a lot of space! I hate to sound whiny about receiving gifts but with a MIL it's hard because she will be around and notice if we don't use/keep her gifts! For our wedding, she gave us an off-registry set of silverware. When I had already registered for silverware I wanted, and some people had already sent a few place settings. So now we have this "extra" set of silverware that I say is for big parties (we never throw big parties, we live in an apartment). I thought that was so weird -- isn't it common knowledge that people pick out their own silverware and dish patterns when they get married? DH's whole side of the family seem registry-averse and I just don't get it. If I'm giving someone a gift, I like to know that they are going to use it and like it, and that it won't be a duplicate of something they already have.
  • UPDATE! Everyone came with a gift. Most of it was NOT off my registry, did NOT include a gift receipt, and is stuff i DO NOT need. I hate to sound ungrateful, but I am stuck with stuff I don't need and can't take back and it's rather annoying.

  • @misspuppychow I am usually always able to track down a place to return items. Target has super loose return policies. I think buy buy baby also will return items without a reciept but they won't give you full value.

  • I check mine every week  :| lol. I try not to but I'm also antsy to buy stuff myself so I scroll through and then close it. Lol. Babies R Us also has a gift manager so you can see the name of the person that bought the item,  that's been hard not to check lol. I told my hubby that only my friends have bought so his better step up!  :p

Every time this thread pops up it makes me want to check it, so I do.
My shower invites went out a couple days ago so I might start seeing some activity on it.

@GracieCakes324 You can see who purchases the gifts?? I've got to check this out!
  • justaudrey, Target was able to scan the barcodes and tell they were not purchased from there.  I don't have a Buy Buy Baby near me. I'm getting sick of checking stores just to be told it wasn't purchased here. I'm wasting more time than I am saving running around. Ugh!

That's exactly what happened to me.  I.really don't get it, so I can sympathize.  At least you still have tons of time to get it sorted out, my shower was at 35w.

  • @misspuppychow that's a bummer. I usually just googled the items at home and figured out what options I had of returning them. Walmart is also super return-friendly but sometimes it depends if it was an online vs in-store purchase.

There were definitely things I couldn't track down where they were purchased and were very taste-specific/decor items. I ended up donating them but you could also sell them on swip swap if you need the money to buy other stuff from your registry.

  • There have only been a few things purchased off either of our registries (We registered at Walmart and Amazon) I'm getting antsy because I want to have all the things we need and be ready when baby comes. It seems the things that have been purchased were not even on my high priority list. I kind of doubt if very many people will actually buy from the registry, and would honestly almost rather gift cards at this point so I can just purchase the things we really need. Thankfully we have already bought all of the big stuff we need ourselves, with the exception of the crib, which my sister bought for us! I guess I'll just have to wait 8 more weeks til the shower to see!
  • Just had my first baby shower today.  My MIL friends gave me so many clothes, unfortunately a ton that are not my style.  And EVERYTHING is basically pink.  Don't get me wrong, I LOVE pink, but some of my friends even caught on and said they are going to have to go buy me some non pink bc it's a little overboard!  I am going to have to do the research to see where all of it was bought bc they did not include receipts, the tags didn't seem to have retailer names on them, and I think some even didn't have tags

@ShanRum3 I hear ya. My shower is in 3 weeks and we are only registered at target. We are having twins and we need a lot of stuff and so far only a handful of things have been bought and only two things we really need (car seat and pack and play). We still have 3 more car seats listed and need at least one more. I know people are last minute shoppers, so I really hope they actually look at the registry soon because not everything is available in the store!

Go to walmart, they often take things not bought there.  If not able to make that work, go to Kid to Kid or Once Upon a child and get a little cash for the things you don't want.
    Or.
Depending on the item, contact the giver, tell them you have something similar and may not be able to use it.  Ask if they mind if you exchange it for diapers or something, see where they bought item.

This is why we didn't tell anyone we were having a girl with DD, I didn't want nor need the overflow of pink clothes!  And I'm so picky about what my daughter wears, I knew I wanted to make sure her wardrobe was my taste.  Also, I do sometimes get people clothes, BUT IMO that's a supplemental gift - I always get something off the registry that's more of a necessity and then get a clothing item as an 'extra' to go with the entire gift.  And seriously, people, GIFT RECEIPTS!!!!!  Especially with baby clothes because it's not on registry AND you have no idea what size and season baby is going to be until they're actually here.  Ugh. lol

  • So I have a question... my shower is June 4 don't get me wrong it's a week away but literally 3 ppl bought off my Registry. Should I post something on Facebook to my friends to remind them? I would like to know if someone going buy bottles!?!

I don't think I would put anything on facebook. If they are anything like my family they wait until the way last minute.  I think if you see some of them in person between now and then or if anyone asks, you can just be like I'm registered at target or wherever.  That's kind of what I did. I had one friend that said, I'm going to just look at your registry and buy you something from amazon, it'll be fine if you get multiples since you are having twins. I sighed and was like that's fine if you want to buy it elsewhere especially if you can get a better price, but Target has the option that you can go on the registry and mark it as purchased, so please do that.  I thought to myself there is a reason I have some items marked as needing two and not one, I don't need 3 of them! This friend has always been a bit spacey, so I wasn't too surprised.

On a different note, I just checked mine again and someone bought the double stroller.  I almost cried! :)

@lilpinky7878No, definitely don't do that! I think that would come off as quite rude. You're not really supposed to let on that you care about the gifts at all. If you're concerned that guests are not aware that you have a registry, then MAYBE it would be appropriate for the host of the shower to send a very tactful email letting them know. Something like "Hey, some of you have called to ask if Lilpinky has a registry, and I can't believe I forgot to put that on the invite! She is registered at XYZ Store."  But if they were already told about the registry on the invitation, then don't do anything.

I had very few things purchased off my registry a week before, too, but then people did their shopping that week. And lots of people will do off-registry gifts, that's just the way it is.
  • In the last 2 days 8 items have been bought off my registry. I was surprised since it's not til june 11, I didn't know I invited such planners! Lol its been really hard not to peek though
  • I've been really good lately, but it's getting hard. I have a friend who is getting married this weekend and she will be on her honeymoon during my shower - she let me know when she ordered my gift and asked me to wait until the shower to open it. I haven't looked at Amazon to see what it is and the box is waiting patiently in the baby's closet. I want to look so bad! I also love surprises and I don't want to ruin them all for myself...

  • My showers are June 11 and June 25 and the invitations went out weeks ago for both. So far 0 items have been purchased from my registry. I think people are either forgetting to purchase through the registry so it marks it off or they're buying off registry. This makes me really glad I'm not revealing that she's a girl until the June 25 shower! But I'm still worried I'll get a ton of gender neutral clothes and nothing that I need. We're getting a ton of girl clothes handed down to us from my cousin who has a 2-year-old girl so we don't need any clothes at all. I'm just worried we'll have to buy everything off my registry after the showers and that'll be really expensive.
  • Oh, I'm totally stalking my registries... I'm way too OCD not to.
  • @journogrl23 I didn't see things start to disappear off my registries until about two weeks ago, and my shower was this past weekend.

That being said, I also did an amazon registry, so I think a lot of people were depending on Prime 2 day!

  • @Allisun85 that's good! Hopefully they're all just waiting until the last minute. I'll be thankful for any gift I receive, but am just hoping I get some of the stuff we really need to help us save some money.
  • So someone whose name I don't recognize just ordered three things off our Amazon registry.  They and their purchased items popped up on my "Thank You" list.  I can't for the life of me think of who this person is.  I have a shower on Saturday, so we'll see.  And they bought nursing related things... kinda weird from someone who appears to be a stranger right now!!

@kwilliams3402Could it be a grandparent or another older person who needed help with online shopping? I had a few of these with my wedding registry. One was from an old friend of my mom's who I had literally never met or heard of, but she had heard about my wedding and sent a gift. It was almost more of a gesture to my mom than to me, but whatever! I liked the gift. Another was from an old family friend who had divorced and remarried and I just didn't know his new wife's name (and she must have done the shopping).
  • @Snaps816, maybe! I figure I'll give it a week for the gift to show up, either on my front porch, or at a shower, and if not, I'll just go back and mark the items unpurchased on Amazon.
  • I am registered in two places since half of my relatives live near one store and the other half an other. Some are elderly and I know dislike buying on line so I thought this might make it easier for them. Both damn registries aren't updating :( so I am unable to spy and will probably get a few duplicates, no worries I can exchange them for other items but, i'm going to whine, that sucks. I am a budgeter and would like to know what we have left to purchase, such as a breast pump since in Canada those aren't covered.
  • My invites went out about two weeks ago. My shower is June 5. I spy daily! Most of the big things have already been purchased so that is nice

    Stuck in a box
We share shower day. I can't wait. I am helping out with little silly things such as printing out a few games, I made one little decor (the popcorn bags have little flags on them to make them a little more fun instead of just brown bags) and will be doing a veggie tray.

I can't wait. I am so excited for this. I don't care about the gifts all that much, more celebrating finally about to be a mom and being surrounded by friends and family.

Hope your day goes off without a hitch

  • With mine being less than a week away, I am constantly checking! Not much has been purchased but I'm thinking some are not going off the registry.
  • I have finally stopped looking at my registry. Last week I deleted and added a couple more things, and it was nice I could delete things one one registry that had been bought off the other registry. But last time I checked a couple more things had been bought, but I haven't looked to see what it was! I don't want to know everything, but it's hard! Lol I'm already trying to figure out what exactly I will buy when I close out the registries and how much it's going to cost. There are some things on my amazon one that are not eligible for the discount,  so I may wait to buy those. With only 8 weeks til my due date, not being able to do anything else to prepare is driving me crazy! Everything I can do without buying anything else has been done, so it's going to be a long week waiting for my shower! But I'm super excited for everyone to come over and visit, and to see baby's room too. This will be the last time I see most of these people for a long time
  • So as a follow-up to the random Amazon gifter, it turned out to be some college friends of ours and for some reason a sibling of theirs' name shower up as who it was from. When I got the Amazon package, they had sent a gift note with it that clued us in. Mystery solved!!

So an update, My shower is this weekend and I think a lot of people will shop off registry which is fine. This morning I saw that our 400$ stroller was purchased and I breathed a huge sigh of relief. I was stressing about when we should buy that... its a jogger so we could have pushed it off but it would have had to be purchased. As far as I am concerned idc what else I receive because the only major thing we need now( we still need many little things) is the monitor

Mine is on Sunday and most of the large items have been bought that I want (one infant car seat, pack and play, stroller, rock n play) so I'm extremely happy and grateful about that. Some of my college friends got together with me this last weekend and gave me gift cards to use for what I didn't get, so if the other infant car seat isn't purchased for the shower (twins), I can at least purchase that and I'll pick up two extra bases to go with it. I'm really thankful about that. Everything else is smaller items and I plan on after Sunday picking stuff up as I see them on sale or at garage sales etc. Its getting so close I just want to be organized!

@tmk0325 it feels so good to not have those huge items looming over us! So glad you were lucky enough to receive those!
  • Question: both of my showers happened (last was this weekend!).  I noticed the pack n play was purchased last month by a co worker, but it still hasn't arrived in the mail.  Should I email her to let her know it hasn't gotten here yet in case there was a problem with the delivery?
  • Katm89Katm89 member
@Wolfie646 I wonder if she is planning on giving it to you in person? Or contact amazon to see if it was supposed to be shipped to your location... u could always work with their customer service directly
  • So, I know this is stupid to complain about, but I'm regretting having 2 registries and, specifically, my Amazon registry. I thought I would have loved Amazon but was actually surprised there prices weren't as cheap or cheaper than babies r us prices and when I first started registering, I noticed a lot of what I picked out became unavailable fast. So, I didn't register for much there or items I really wanted. I put items on there that would be good to have with the completion discount, which has already shown up as effective and doesn't actually apply to most items I would purchase myself if I'm not gifted them. Babies r us is my "main" registry. Well, everyone is buying off the amazon registry and barely anyone has touched my babies r us one. I'm thinking about adding more items I wanted from BRU to Amazon but I also wanted to step away from checking it so I could be surprised at my shower in a little over a week. Don't get me wrong, I'm very appreciative of everything that has been purchased, I just wish I only made the BRU registry. Oh well...thanks for letting me vent!!
