Not having MW/OB appt until later?

Is anyone not having their first prenatal appointment until 10 weeks plus?  This is baby #3 for me and once you get past #2 with my midwife, she generally doesn't schedule your first prenatal until 11 weeks.
I don't have any reason to need any interventions right now, and I don't need info on what to eat/avoid/etc. but OMG I think I will slowly go crazy over the next 6 weeks without any confirmation.

Is anyone else in the same boat?

    I'm in the same boat.
I called today for an appointment thinking 8 weeks. We're going to NY in late June to see H's family, he was excited to tell them face to face. 8 weeks would have been the week before we left. The office said my OB likes to have them at 10-12 weeks. So early July it is... But that means we have the appointment the week after we get back. Now I'm rethinking telling anyone - I wanted to hear the heartbeat first...
I figured I would test weekly just to be sure everything is still there.
But 9 weeks should be ok, right? To tell his parents only? Thoughts? Am I making a big deal of this?

In the past I've gone in at 8 weeks, but with my new OB they didn't want to see me until 10-12 weeks. I told the receptionist there was no way I was waiting until 12 weeks so 10 it is.
@Mylitta we've told parents but no siblings or extended family and only 1 friend. The later appointment is making me nervous to tell too. And truth be told, I tested again this morning just to be sure.
@zdmd_14  I'm going crazy over here. 4 weeks left but that seems soooo far away!

Edited because typing is a problem today.

@katesmama0706 I think she would have let me come in at 10 (the Doppler worked at10 weeks last time...and she refers you out to an OB for the 20 week US or any needed later ones ) but DH is out of town for summer drill then from 9-11 weeks (he's national guard). So I'm stuck with waiting.
Glad you only have 4 weeks left though!

@mylitta I think that's safe to tell just family. Especially if everything seems to go well up until then.  We've already told our parents (and my parents have been remarried multiple times so it's more people than I'd prefer).  This is DHs first kid and he is too excited to not tell them all. Lol

@katesmama0706 @zdmd_14  Thanks guys. I think we might. Just parents/immediate family though. His parents remarried, so there's two... But not too many. I'm going to wait on my mom's family (she's the oldest of 8, they all have 2-3 kids. Too many people).

Do you think there's a reason the Dr's are waiting longer now?
  • @Mylitta the receptionist told me very unceremoniously that it's to weed out early miscarriages as long as you don't have a history that requires you or baby to be checked out sooner. I don't know if that's the case with every doctor though.

@katesmama0706  A little harsh, but logical.
  • zdmd_14zdmd_14 member
I think that what @katesmama0706 said is correct for most cases.  In my case it's a midwife only practice (which is what I want) and she just doesn't have the setup for frequent ultrasounds. This is the only part I hate.  I know missed miscarriages are pretty  rare, but it kills me that I could get to 11 weeks only to find out that things stopped progressing at 6 weeks or something.
Trying to think happy thoughts over here.

  • @zdmd_14 this is seriously the exact thing I am paranoid about with the later appointment! I keep telling myself to take it one day at a time but there is a tiny part of my brain that is like "but what if the baby stops growing and you don't knowwwww?"
I think once I see a heartbeat I'll feel so much better!
  • I am thankful I only have to wait another week! Waiting till 10 weeks would stress me out. However we don't get U/S until after 12 weeks here usually so that will be hard to wait for.

I am pretty sure I am going to be labelled high risk due to my PCOS so I may end up seeing my OB and RE and they still only booked my first apt for 7 1/2 weeks. I feel like they are less concerned about early appointments because there is less to screen for/test for. Also my OB only works PT and she is insanely busy so I have a feeling I will wait awhile to get any type of appointment.

  • Yep, I am also in the 10 week boat. The anticipation is the WORST.

  • Hi there, @zdmd_14 ! I called today expecting that my OB would want me to come in at 8 or 9 weeks, and she doesn't like to see people until closer to 12 !! I was really surprised. Oh well, she is really reputable, so I'll do what she says.

@gonetothesea and @kellybean1988 we will just all need to find good distractions while everyone else gets their ultrasounds and bloodwork lol

I don't know when my LMP was so they are having me come in 6 weeks after I know we had sex - I'm estimating my due date until we get an ultrasound confirming.

I'll give a positive take on this ( I know it's hard to wait!).  I prefer later appointments and tried to schedule my first visit around 10 weeks rather than 7 or 8.

When I was pregnant with DS1 I had a 6 week appointment.  We couldn't see anything, my OB was very quick to tell me that it didn't necessarily mean anything but that we'd come back in a week from then to re-check.  I was devastated, I had some spotting and was basically stressed out and paranoid the entire time.  In the end it turned out that I just ovulated late that cycle and DS was just quite a bit smaller than we expected, but from being on the bump for a few years I know that this isn't unusual.  When I go to my appointment at 10 weeks, there isn't any question that we should see something.  Even if I ovulated late again, there will still be something there to indicate what is going on.  It's the not knowing that I prefer to avoid.

On a less serious note, the 9,10+ week ultrasounds are so different.  I could see DS2's little arms and legs! He looked like a little gummy bear.  It was really great to see him so developed.
    Totally agree here.

It does suck to have to wait, but I've seen so many threads on previous BMB (I'm a lurky lurker) where people went in for very early ultrasounds and ended up in a panic because the doctor couldn't see much, or the baby isn't progressed as far as they had thought. But like @ElleMF728's case, they have have ovulated later and so the baby isn't as big as the LMP date suggests. At least if we have to wait until later, the doctor (and us!) will be able to see the LO's a lot easier and more clearly!

Ditto this. I'm a walking example of it right now (first appointment today at 7wks on the nose). I KNOW I ovulated late, thankfully, but I'm still stressed out because the HR on US was not 'where it should be'. So now I'm going to stress and fritter for a week to get a recheck US to see whether baby is viable or not. I'm not sure that an early appointment really helped matters in my case and has just ramped up my anxiety for the next week. Nothing's going to change based on that early appointment - i'll miscarry or I won't and now I'm going to obsess over something that may or may not happen even more so than I already was ;)

  • @Lecool , it sounds like you have to wait until later too? I don't go in until 12 weeks, and my OB didn't want to see me until then! My appt. is July 12...sigh. I am ok with waiting for the aforementioned reasons but it does seem a long way away!

@kellybean1988 I don't have to wait quite as long as you guys do. Mine is on 6/20, and I'll be 8+3. From what it sounds like, I'll go in again a few weeks after that.

I'm right betweenthe two of you @kellybean1988 and @Lecool. We'll just have to live vicariously through others until our times. I'll fret a bit likely as well...
  • I'm in the same boat. I won't see the doctor until 10 weeks. I understanding the reasoning, but it doesn't ease my fears. I have no symptoms, so I'm still peeing on sticks to convince myself I'm still pregnant. Everyone else has beta numbers and I'm like, well, I can pee on a stick after an hour and it's dark within a minute... That means something, I guess.
  • @SunsetSky ha ha ha same here.  I think the pregnancy test industry might see record sales this month all down to me...

  • I'm lurking from December, because I'm probably going to go in January, anyway. But yeah, my first appointment with the midwife is the Monday after I hit 10 weeks.

It's tough. What if the bean isn't growing? I just don't know right now. And I mean, I've been meaning to go to the on-base military provider and get the pregnancy confirmed via blood test, since I'll want to go there for free ultrasounds anyway (I found today out I need an Rx for a breast pump if I want Tricare to cover it, too), but I'm busyyyyyy and that stupid wait will take hourssssss. (Walk-in clinics FTW, people.)
