UO - 5.19

Re: UO - 5.19

  • Wait, it's ya'll not y'all isn't it?

my UO this morning almost included that fast food is almost always disgusting. Good thing I left that out! I'm sitting at sonic with a small tot and small frozen limeade while DS sleeps in the car after we ran some errands. Both are breaking through my MS quite nicely.

sometimes I have to try hard to not be a hippocrat

  • @slartybartfast No, it's a contraction for you all so it's y'all. You doesn't have an a in it.

All contractions are lazy, if you think about it. Oh well. I'm not an English major and I will use all the lazy words I please!
  • I enjoy y'all, I find it endearing and occasionally will catch myself saying it.  It sounds weird with my Yankee accent though!

As a born and raised southerner I am guilty of the monogram obsession. I have my initials on everything. I have no idea what the appeal is but I know I love it.

Also I love y'all but cannot stand ain't. Ugh it's one of my pet peeves.

It is actually ya'll as it is a contraction of ya and all.

  • I think I'm seconding, thirding, thirty- fourthing this one but I too cannot stand headbands and bows on a bald baby's head. I'm 1,000,000% southern so I guess I need my card taken away but no. thank. you.  I don't mind monograms though, just not on EVERYthing.

I will throw this in too. Piercing a baby's ears. I find that bizarre.  If I have a girl, she will get to decide someday if she wants it done. Not my body, not my choice, especially when she is an infant.

  • @slartybartfast Sonic's chili cheese tots are the stuff dreams are made of.

@swhiddon33 babies start pulling on their ears when they begin teething. For that reason alone I wouldn't pierce a baby's ears, but mainly I just couldn't stomach it. I've never watched my LO get a shot or anything. It's just too sad for me.
  • My UO is that people should be fined for using cell phones and walking.  It drives me nuts when I'm walking down the sidewalk and someone stops dead in their tracks in front of me to type on their phone.  They don't even move out of the way.  Same thing for people who walk impossibly slowly, or practically walk into you bc they aren't looking up.  If they aren't safe to look at and drive, they aren't safe to look at and walk.

Also, I don't think people should host a sex reveal if they are going to be insanely disappointed with one sex.  Someone is going to get that on video/photo and there will be witnesses and your poor kid will find out one day.  Keep it to yourself if you're not going to be happy either way.  I know a couple who really didn't want a third kid and got pregnant accidentally and everyone knows.  They obviously love this child now but everyone knows they didn't want a third.  I feel really bad if that kid finds out one day.

Noooooooooooo(said in my most childish voice).  So I'm not an English major either, but growing up in the south and reading ANY book y'all is always used. I also googled(because Google is never wrong) and every source, including dictionary DotCom says its y'all.

This pregnancy was a surprise and I know people will ask if it was planned. I'm an awful liar so I have no idea what I will say.
  • @doodleoodle - obviously you should say whatever you're comfortable with but I don't think unplanned necessarily means unwanted. You could certainly say something like "No but what a great surprise! We're nervous but so excited!"  You don't have to tell people if you'd be happier not having this baby.

In Idaho it ya'll. We use it as a contraction of 'all of ya' or 'ya all'.

  • My UO: I think most forms of social media are redundant and exhausting. I have FB, but I couldn't even tell you what the purposes of things like Instagram, Periscope, Snap Chat, etc are. And I don't care.

I totally agree.  they all seem the same to me. I have a twitter but don't have any idea why, I never go on there.

my UO. I think TW are overused. like you can't tell from the post title that you might want to skip that one. the daily news doesn't give TW and many of their stories are far more traumatic (of course I live in florida, so it's all craziness down here).
that being said, if i post something unsettling, i'll probably include TW, out of respect.
  • I don't mind the word y'all but I have to say it sounds weird coming from anyone that lives here (Michigan). It just isn't in our normal way of speaking...if we want to imply "you all" we'll just say everyone or you guys. So y'all sounds undoubtably southern because no one up here says it lol.
As for ain't, it just sounds strange and like it shouldn't be used lol.  Every once in a while I'll have a brain fart and say it and my husband will give me the strangest look lol.
  • @mimi603107 My mom went to Wisconsin once for work and was surprised that everyone up there says "yous guys." I think that would get on my nerves.
  • @penelope4612 that's true. We wanted another one we just weren't expecting another one so soon. Thanks for the suggestions! I had no idea what I was going to say. I just feel embarrassed that it wasn't planned and had been trying to think of a way to avoid criticism, but I think expressing our excitement right away is a good idea.
  • @ashleaf2018 yeah, obviously it's just where you grow up and what you are used to lol.

In North Carolina, it's y'all. I don't like "ain't" either, especially when someone like a teacher or preacher says it. Haha!

  • I'm late to the party, but as a lifelong true southerner (Georgia, NC, and SC), it's definitely y'all. That said, I'm pretty impressed that y'all has made it as far up north as Idaho, so you guys just say/spell it however you need to in keeping the y'all legacy going @Kate08Young .

@penelope4612 - I can't stand people who text on their cell phones while walking. One of my public health professors was so annoyed by it, she wanted to study the 'dangerous repercussions' of people blocking sidewalks due to texting.

  • Ain't stresses me out, as do a lot of contractions, but I am an English teacher and grammar rules have been drilled into my heads for years.

You southerners, I'm sure I'll grow to love you all, but keep your monograms and giant bows. I do not understand it. I will accept y'all, but my Pittsburgh self raises you a yinz. Right,

  • And for us north of the border, it's "eh?"  Ugh, not all Canadians live in igloos and say eh?!  I have family in Texas who would agree with y'all in the south though :)
  • My in-laws are from Iowa and my FIL always waits until I say y'all for the first time on every visit. He thinks it's hilarious. I think it's funny to hear him say it. I'm from VA and living in TX....

That's popular on the east coast, too. I used to think it was weird and now I'm accustomed to it after living there for some years. @ashleaf2018
