I feel bad because it's a trip to Disney for my niece and nephews first time! So sad, I would just rather play it safe. I live in NJ so I'm not too worried. Not most... ALL cases of Zika in the continental US is from travelling outside of the US. No cases have been reported from mosquito bites in FL at all.

I asked my OB if I should cancel my trip for a wedding on the Mississippi Coast the first weekend in June - she said she wouldn't. Told me to just keep an eye on the CDC website for active cases in that area and make my decision closer to then. Also, she said, DEET and even recommended DEET wipes.

The wipes should be much safer than a spray- inhaling DEET is rough!

NASA created a map to estimate the risk of the Zika virus actually being carried by mosquitos in 50 cities across the continental US in any given month of the year. They used factors like rainfall, poverty, etc. Places like Washington, DC, NJ, and NY all have moderate to high risk during their summer months. I don't mean bring this up to instill fear, but rather to point out that I don't think cancelling travel to the south is necessary or even puts you at less risk. It's very scary, and everyone wants to be vigilante. I would practice good habits to protect yourself no matter where you live this summer. There are no different guidelines for pregnant women that live in Flordia than any other state right now.

I work in a place that supports a lot of research, including Zika, and they're all working furiously fast because pretty much everyone across the board except that it's not a question of IF Zika is coming to the states but when. Also, I have a friend that's an epidemiologist who lived in TX for years and she told me that her epi friends were back-crunching data on microcephaly in texas and finding it trending upwards in the past couple of years. That's pretty soft and uncorroborated data but it's coming from trusted sources - all we know right now about zika is how much we don't know. Lurking from November. I just returned from a trip to France yesterday and it is way too chilly there for mosquitoes. Granted, I was by the Franco-German border but I used to live in a more central/southern part of France and mosquitoes shouldn't be a problem at the moment anywhere. Also, there have been no reported cases in France. Enjoy the trip and try not to worry!
DH will be in southern Mississippi for two weeks in June for military training. 5ish days of that is "in the field" (in tents, instead of dorms, I guess). Their uniforms are treated with some sort of mosquito repellent and he will has said he will be vigilant about DEET as well....but I'm kind of thinking about asking him to use condoms for a couple of months after he returns, since it can stay in sperm for quite a while. Is that over the top?

I want to look into essential oils but not sure how effective they'd be. I'm prepared for long sleeves in July. Local news said yesterday there's 66 confirmed Zika in Florida, but all are from travel. @PMforbie I'm not sure if you'll have too much trouble in St. Augustine if you're by the beaches. Def be safe, but you'll find the further inland, the worse they are.

I'm in CA, which is supposed to be low-risk, but I will be stocking up on DEET and PMD products for this summer!! I was originally just worried about me because I get bit all of the time. But, as other commenters have noted, it can be sexually transmitted so I will be pouring it on my DH as well.
I thought there hadn't been any Zika cases contracted within the US. I know there are travel-related ones, where a resident got Zika while away on vacation and brought it home. I was vacationing in Flordia in February and was all over those stats because we've been TTC.
I told my family that we wouldn't be vacationing in the Caribbean anytime soon until this whole Zika thing is sorted out. Contracting it can affect future pregnancies - not just when you are prego.

I found DEET in wipe form, so got like 456789 packages of that. I wasn't concerned until there was one confirmed case of Zika in Wisconsin.
@ToBeMiller1921 I live in MN and read about that WI case. That person contracted zika when traveling so she did not contract it in WI. Luckily, we are both in the very low risk area of the country. The type of mosquito that carries the zika virus is not projected to come this far north. That said, DEET wipes are the way to go!

This is something I am truly worried about. I do not live in an area with Zika but we have a trip planned to the Mediterranean in August and I've been hearing on the news that Zika will be making it's way there this summer. We are going on a 12 day cruise. From what I've heard, mosquitoes don't typically make it to the ship. But I'm scared for our shore excursions. Ugh. When we planned the trip we had no idea Zika would be in Europe (or that I'd get pregnant this fast and it would even be a concern)

I live in FL and with all of these new articles coming out about Zika, they have officially TERRIFIED ME! I also have a trainer that I meet with twice a week who is going to Rio this month. I can't help but feel scared to see her when she gets back. I feel like it's too close for comfort. I spray with bug spray, I try to stay inside as frequently as possible, but I live on a pond and I have a toddler. SO SCARY.
Ladies, I highly recommend looking at the CDC website for misquito repellent options that work. The CDC says that natural / essential oil methods do not work. Consumers released a study on the best repellents.

@SA0012 I know what soap you are talking about. I have a teacher friend who also has a lawn-care business, and she loves it. Swears it keeps all bugs and ticks away. It's a weird name that starts with an "m". I'll have to ask her when I see her.

Has anyone here traveled recently to any of the Caribbean countries affected? My husband and I visited Puerto Rico, Antigua, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Martin and St. Thomas in November. I got my BFP the first week in May. The doctor says no need for testing, but I still worry about this every day. Neither of us had any symptoms, but the "symptoms" are so minor that I'm not sure we would have even noticed if we had. Anyone else out there in the same boat?

My husband and I got what we assumed was a nasty cold while there - our 10 month old was with us but showed no symptoms. He's still breastfed and hasn't taken to solids as yet so we assumed the milk 'protected' him or maybe he's just superbaby lol. I'm due Feb 3rd so definitely a bit nervous given our travel history but trying not to think about it. I will ask the midwife about testing though I don't remember getting bitten by any mosquitoes....
We have a two and a half week trip booked for this August to spend time with family in the Caribbean since the previous trip was unplanned and short. Hubby wants to cancel.. I'm actually torn.... My family lives there and they can't just leave they have to deal with it. My Dad is 76 and I worry about not seeing him enough since I live here in the states now. I'm so stressed about this I can't see straight .... Ugh! It's like I have to choose between the family I have and already know and the family I'm growing....
So all that to say -I'm in the same boat and stress about it every day!
I'm seriously so terrified. I live in Central Valley California an area where they are predicting it will come. I've already seen the mosquito that is the carrier of Zika in my backyard, doesn't help mosquitos love me and my son and we have already been bitten so many times. No reported cases yet and I'm hoping it stays that way!
I live in the FL panhandle. I have been using bug spray, but if I'm going outside for a short period of time (playing outside with my daughter or taking the dog out) I wear a light jacket and long pants. I attract mosquitos like crazy! I will be eaten alive while my husband doesn't get a single bite. I am planning on staying indoors as much as possible. My only worry is come August, I will have to stay outside with my students for recess. Maybe I'll pick up some of the DEET wipes others suggested. =-/
so my DH is scheduled to go to Morocco with the military in August. I was reading up that the CDC doesnt know how long the zika virus lasts in sperm and if you have a pregnant spouse to use a condom for the remainder of the pregnancy. I'd just rather he not go but it looks like thats not going to happen.

Gah, just read there are currently over 250 pregnant women in the US with Zika :-( not sure if those are all ones who contracted out of the US but still scary! Anyone else stressing about this? Is there any point in the pregnancy that contracting it won't harm baby anymore?
