  • Congrats!!! I JUST found out that LabCorp is giving it's out of pocket paying patients a flat fee of $250 to get the test done. My OB/GYN told me to check with the MFM folks on Monday when I get my NT scan and if they won't write the script to talk to him. I hope they let me do both! How long did it take you to get the results back???

@sammyl1221 I will! I think a few hundred dollars is a small price to pay for (some) peace of mind! But I still really want to do the NT scan because they can see some other things besides chromosomal issues. Really hope I can talk them into letting me do both.

  • I'm curious how many of you doing this are AMA and/or have other reasons that your insurance is covering it?  Or if you are paying out of pocket?

We have our NT scan on Monday and (I believe) will have the option of cell free DNA or the standard first tri genetic screening blood tests but it's definitely possible/likely that we will have to pay out of pocket for the cell free DNA.  I was also told that, for women who are paying out of pocket, they use some company that only screens for T21 and T18, not T13 or any sex aneuploidys.  So I'm not sure.... I think the standard first tri genetic screening is less sensitive but also screens for T13.... FTM here so happy to hear thoughts/experiences.
  • I am not AMA. This is my third pregnancy, two previous losses. My last loss was due to Turners, so I am elegible for NIPT. Really not happy to be on the higher risk group but I will enjoy the silver lining of knowing my risk and finding out the sex so early.

I'm a carrier for a genetic issue (although not one that is checked during the nipt), so mine is covered that way.
  • @penelope4612 I am AMA but I would be doing the Harmony testing even if I weren't.  Ours tests for Tri 13, 18, and 21 and we have to pay for it, but for us it's worth the cost to get some peace of mind.  Knowing the sex early is an extra bonus :)
  • I am doing the verifi test and anthem blue cross blue Shield covers it for all singleton pregencies, they confirmed for me. We have a very high deductibles though and verifi said that the most I would owe would be $99 if I paid in full when the bill came. This took many calls to figure out, but I am glad I did. The panorama one was going to cost much more, however it all goes towards my deductible which I am sure I will meet this year anyways. So in the end I don't think it will cost me anything extra.

  • so I've been reading a little about these screening tests, and there are many differences between them. how did you decide which one to do, or was it entirely directed by your doctor and insurance?

Harmony and Panorama are the same, it's just that labs and doctors have to use one of the other and that's who they give Rxs for.  That's how it is in Canada anyway.

@zubenescamali my doctor only uses panorama. He said it's the best one on the market. If you go to their website and their results they show you their margin of error compared to other tests.  However it isnt a big difference in terms of results.

  • So my OB offers a test called Counsyl which I can't use due to having multiples.  The only other option is a standard Antenatal screening blood work but the literature doesn't have a brand name of the test on it.  Anyone have any experience with doing a genetic screening their doc doesn't offer?  Is that even possible?  There's got to be a good option without the high false positive rate for twins.

  • @zubenescamali your doctors office will be contracted with 1 or 2 of the companies and you'll basically have to get that one test if you opt for the testing.  Your insurance may also only be contracted with certain companies.  It seems there is no consistency between providers in term of what they will offer.  I have heard that some will not even offer the cell free DNA if there is no risk, only the standard screening.

I went to my a early risk assessment appointment today and am happy to share what they told me for those who might find it helpful.  FWIW, I am not AMA and I have no known risk factors, previous history of genetic abnormalities in my family, etc.

The office I go to has everyone get the NT scan.  The ultrasound measures the width of the quantity of fluid at the nape of the neck and also looks for nasal bones.  Apparently, if there is too much fluid at the nape of the neck and/or the nasal bones aren't formed by 12 weeks then that can indicate a greater likelihood of Down's syndrome.

They then offered the standard blood work or the cell free DNA.  They use MaterniT21 for the cell free DNA, which looks for trisomies 21, 18 and 13.  This specific test does not screen for other genetic abnormalities other than those 3, and she said it's much better at detecting T21 and 18 than T13 but it is not as accurate at detecting abnormalities in women under 35 as it is at detecting abnormalities in women over 35 and the positive predictive value of the test is lower (meaning that if it comes back negative it's unlikely that there's a problem but if it comes back positive it still has a fair chance of being wrong).  This would likely not be covered by my insurance because I am not high risk and she didn't estimate the cost but I have heard MaterniT21 is one of the more expensive testing options (compared to Harmony and Panorama) - but who knows if that's true.

The standard blood work (which is covered by most insurance companies) looks at 3 different markers in the blood.  They then combine those results with the results of the NT scan and information about other risk factors and give you a risk ratio of how likely the baby has a genetic abnormality on a scale from 1:5 - 1:10,0000.  This blood work can detect T21, T18, T13, and she said it can also detect other genetic abnormalities.  So she said if we weren't specifically concerned about T21, she would recommend this test as a better overall screening test.  She also said that because we will likely have to pay out of pocket for MaterniT21, that we could get it at any time (like, we could get the standard one now because it has to be done between certain ages, but get the MaterniT21 later if we still wanted it).  If the standard screening comes back abnormal, then we could get MaterniT 21 or an amniocentesis.  If the MaterniT21 comes back abnormal then the next step is also amio.

We ended up getting the standard screening blood work and NT scan bc it's free and then if it comes back abnormal we can decide what to do then.  Our NT scan was normal and we'll have to wait a week or so to find out the results of the bloodwork.

Again in this is only the advice and options that my doctors office recommends so other people might hear something different but I hope it's helpful.
  • @DiFazette You may have seen this already, but there's a twin mom on Nov'16 that got results back on genetic testing (and knows the sex of one of the twins).
  • Thanks @penelope4612

This is helpful information, and obviously I will double check with my dr when we see them, but I am mainly concerned about being out of the window for the Materni21 or Verify etc.

I have thus far had 2 babies who had soft markers for trisomy 18 at their anatomy scan and both time we went through weeks of hell while waiting for more in depth ultrasounds etc. I know that at one point I was even told I was too late for the free cell DNA tests.

This time I was leaning towards a free cell DNA test, but it is not covered by insurance at this point - it would be really nice to know if the free cell is an option at 18-20 weeks if we were to find soft markers again.

Thanks @JessCL.  I'll take a look.  It may be the standard blood work and they can confirm if there's a boy or not.  Can't confirm if it's 2 boys, 1 b/1g.  It will also confirm there's 2 girls if there's no Y present I believe.  On my way to November to stalk ;-)

I go for my Panorama on May 24, can't wait to put this unknown part of pregnancy behind me so I can relax into it a bit. I'm AMA, so it's covered for me. My last pregnancy I had to pay $800 out of pocket, but it was so worth it for me to drop the stress early...

  • I got my blood drawn for Harmony test today. I'm not high risk but I found out that Labcorp offers a $250 fee if insurance does not cover it. Personally it's worth it for us for the peace of mind. Can't wait for the results to make sure baby is healthy and to find out the sex!!!

@mrsg2390 I just got my blood drawn for that too because I called LabCorp to see what the cost would be and they also said $250 BUT for the InformaSeq, not Harmony. I'm disappointed now. I don't think the one I got will tell me if i'm having a boy or a girl, which of course isn't that important but if I'm going to pay for something I would like to know everything there is to know.

  • @juliehollz13 Aw dang! I wonder if it's area-specific? I had to ask a lot of detailed questions to insurance (luckily I work in medical insurance) and different labs to see what my options were and was told the Harmony was basically the only one that had a reasonable cash price since insurance likely won't cover at all. I asked the poor girl drawing my blood like 3 times today if mine tests for the Trisomy's and the sex and she kept reassuring me Yes... I'm hoping she was right! I will be disappointed if it's not, but I'm trying not to feel too greedy! Hopefully everything comes back perfectly for you!!

@mrsg2390 Yeah my insurance would flat out deny the NIPT testing if i'm already low risk. LabCorp in my area said that the Harmony test would be $800 cash with no discounts. The only info I could get for the discounted one would be the InformaSeq, which does come with the option of testing for the sex but that's not what the Dr. ordered. I should have specified but didn't want it to seem like I was only getting it to know the sex  early, I just thought it would be a perk but the most important thing of course is that the baby is healthy. I'll just get a private 3D U/S at 15 weeks to figure out the sex (it costs like $99 in my area so not bad).

@mrsg2390 I would prefer a boy first because I've always envisioned having a male child and we have the name all the stuff for a boy picked out, and the baby room is already boy themed because the previous owners had a little boy and we just didnt change much in that room. I'd love a girl of course, it's just we don't have a name we really like for a girl, so it would be an adjustment. Plus we'd have to repaint and an remove the little baseball light fixtures lol. BUT girls have a much better selection of baby clothes and furniture than boys ,and gender neutral options are really hard to find.
