Elowen?

We are still trying to find a name we both like for our little girl! Yesterday I read the name Elowen, and really like it. One of DH's favorite names is Ellie, but for me, it isn't a good stand alone name, plus is super popular. Elowen could easily be Ellie, but change to a more mature name if she wanted.

I'm concerned that 1) we'd be giving our daughter a "weird" name that no one would recognize and she'd have to repeat herself every time she introduced herself and 2) that it would end up sounding like "Elwin" when yelled across a playground or was said fast, etc. What do you all think?

Also, is Elowyn a proper spelling? The "y" just looks more feminine to me. Thanks!

Our current top contender is Erin Willow. (MN is tentative, I like it, DH isn't sure. But Erin is his pick, so I would probably get to keep the MN I picked. :) )

Re: Elowen?

  • It's a little too "out there" IMO, so I personally wouldn't use it, but I think it's pretty. It looks like Elowen is the proper spelling. Are you considering the same middle name Willow? I would choose something else to go with Elowen, especially since both are tree names. Maybe something more common so she could fall back on it if she wanted to.

  • No, we definitely wouldn't use Willow w/ Elowen. I was actually going to add a comment and see what people thought would be a good middle name! :) Suggestions welcome!
  • I like Elowen. I would avoid the 'y' spelling. Also suggesting Eloise.

  • I personally find it an ugly name, sorry.

I would not choose Elowen. She would have to repeat her name a lot and I agree that it's a little too LOTR for my tastes.

  • I think it's beautiful. I also like Elodie.

  • I like it! It reminds me of Bronwen, which I also like a lot.
  • I sort of hate it. It just doesn't feel natural to say, to me. I know it's a legitimate name, but it feels like a mishmash name and I'm not sure why.
  • I like non traditional names, but its a hard balance to keep, being different enough but also not being a speshul snowflake. I think this name could work in that category. Its different without being too out there. Avoid the 'Y' spelling, tho... that steps into snowflake land, IMO.
I will agree that it feels Lord of the Rings. I happen to like fantasy / sci-fi, so I would like this name on someone I met. And while she (and you, initally) may have to repeat her name sometimes, I don't think it would be too excessive so as to be overly annoying. I would agree on not using willow in the middle.
I think it looks and sounds pretty, and is a good non traditional name choice. Thumbs up

  • It's pretty but my first thought was LOTR.
  • It's too out there for me, I don't like the sound of it at all. Erin is a lovely name as is a previous suggestion of Eloise.

I don't like the sound of it personally.
    Prefer Erin, Ellen, Elodie, Eloise

I don't like Elowyn. What about Eileen?

  • I like it. It's no more unusual in sound than Eleanor or Eloise, people just have a hard time with names that they don't see or hear as often.
  • Do you say it 'el-oh-n' ? I actually love LOTR but this name doesn't seem to flow or something?

To my ear, Elowyn is more akin to Aurora than Eileen.
  • I actually love this name, even though I've never heard it before. It does sound LOTR but that's a plus, for me! :) I honestly considered using Eowyn or Arwen for our LOs mn until we decided on Gwendolen for her fn, and that's too many repeated -en sounds. But Elowen/Elowyn is very pretty!

Probably my only tiny quibble is that when you say it out loud, it sounds like you're saying the letters L-O-N. Which is meaningless, but if someone wasn't familiar with the name Elowen (as many won't be), they might hear it as a weird set of initials or something. Just a thought. I'm biased of course, but Gwendolen might be an alternative for you, since it sounds very similar but is more recognizable.
  • An idea if you don't want it to seem too LOTR...
Ella Wynn or Ella Wynne. Seems like a classic, double name but would have the same pronunciation.
  • I prefer Eowyn as in LOTR.
