Gassy baby tummy

My lil boy is five weeks now and has gas problems. He is not colic and does not cry a lot too. Its just the effort he has to exert to pass out is enough to make me wrench with pain. He is a calm one otherwise. My daughter had reflux and gas so i gave her ranitadine and simeticone. But the paeds doc told me he does not need it yet.

Im giving him a good company herbal water, like gripe water, but a trusted one. But any advice from you moms will be much appreciated. Any thing to make my baby stress free.

Re: Gassy baby tummy

  • Roo is the same. Because we FF we switched him to a sensitive brand and that helped tremendously. If you're BFing you may try cutting certain things out of your diet and see if that helps.

  • Our LO is also 5 weeks and has been so fussy today and hadn't really slept at all. She had a fever which we thought was the problem, but we finally got her to sleep 3 hours ago and she has been seeming to nothin but pass gas. I'm starting to think a lot of the fussiness may have been from trapped gas? Could there be trapped gas even if they have dirty diapers? Haven't ever dealt with a gassy baby so not sure what to look for.

Iv cut down on all foods that may be causing gas like dairy, beans and all. It helps but only a bit. Im doing warm baths, massaging and burpings. Iv heard about the bowen method. Any clue what that is?
  • My DD has such bad gas she wretches in her sleep and wakes up screaming. Super puffy belly too.
Mylicon drops and gripe water only help a bit
  • DS has bad gas as well. Walking/bouncing around in the "colic curl" hold seems to help when he is really hurting.

    It's so sad.
i try everything to help her but nothing helps pass it other than letting her lay flat on her back and letting her kick her legs a lot.
i found out her gas is because she's a gulper when she eats from (boob or bottle)and I can only get a burp sometimes not every time.

i have 16 brand new Avent naturals bottles I can't use now and that's sad .
Only dr Browns with a premie nipple is slow enough that she doesn't gulp the entire time we decide to give her a bottle.

anybody wanna trade dr Browns for new avent naturals bottles ? Ugh I seriously messed up when I opened and threw out those boxes after the baby shower

  • Our LO was having AWFUL gas pains and was not sleeping and just screamed in pain all the time. We tried everything and nothing was working. We finally started giving him probiotics (Gerber Soothe) and he's been a whole new baby since. As soon as the second day he was SOOO much better. They're kind of expensive BUT SOO WORTH IT.

Im making something of my own too. I take a lil cumin, fennel and dill seeds and boil them in water. Adding fenugreek also works. It helps the stomach to clear gas faster. Also helps the baby to gain weight. I drink it too. Hope it works.

Just FYI when I took Fenugreek to increase my supply I had to stop because it made LO's gas much, much worse so you may want to watch out for that. I've heard it's happened to lots of other babies as well.

Ok. Thanks. I will eliminate fenugreek.
  • LO had terrible gas pains and would squeal and writhe in pain. It usually happened in the evenings and I felt so desperate and frustrated. LO is 7 weeks old now and the gas has all but disappeared (knock on wood). I haven't changed my diet although I did start taking magnesium and a probiotic supplement. I don't think the supplements are the answer - maybe LO just time for his digestive system to mature a bit?! I have no answers, just wanted to chime in.

I stopped diary a couple of weeks ago and also started probiotics this week.  The probiotics are working I think.  He's been passing more gas and had the largest poop today he's ever had (previously it was lots of little ones).  We also started Zantac this week for reflux, so we'll see which helps.

Im seeing a gradual relief in my son since i started my home made remedy. Its quite gradual, but there. And its completely safe. Zero side effects.
  • Omg! Mylicon drops... Or the off brand by major helps with swallowed gas. Oh wow! We gave them to our almost seven week son last night and he played by himself in a little mat/ activity gym for 30 min or more just smiling a cueing. I hadn't seen him act like this for days. Then last night, he slept seven hours straight! That's after three days of screaming! Best $2.50 I ever spent!

Wow. Seven hours. Thats pretty awesome. I would give anything to see such a major relief in my son.

You know, its not about all the work load and the tiredness. That also goes in the secondary slot. The primary factor becomes how comfortable your baby is. Your kids are only young once and i want to enjoy my son's infancy period because i missed out with my daughter due to her reflux and gas.

I totally agree! It was fun to watch our happy baby play last night! I can only imagine how much more he can learn and grow and rest now that he isn't focused on his belly gurgles!

oh! And there are no known side effects.

Gerber Soothe.  Pricey but they seem to be helping.  They are cheapest on Amazon
