Have you eaten sushi (raw)??

Re: Have you eaten sushi (raw)??

  • I'm desperate for some sushi... but I like the real bad ones. Spicy Tuna Rolls are my life. I cannot bring myself to do it. I'm sure it's not REALLY that bad, I only get sushi at high end reputable restaurants (I'm a bit of a Sushi snob), but I'm just paranoid.

Kind of reminds me of this video...

  • why would he cut out shrimp @mintz1982? my obgyn told
me that's one of the only seafood items I should eat as much as I want. also if my husband told his pregnant wife what she was "allowed" to eat he wouldn't have hands.
  • I don't do raw fish anyways but I've done all the other no no's, lunch meat,  runny eggs,  soft cheese, hair color, sleeping on my back.

  • Yikes, @Mintz1982. The day DH tells me anything I'm "allowed" (or not allowed) to do he will get a swift wake up call right to his nuts. Luckily for him we share the same outlook and do not dictate one another's lives.
Yes.  I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this.  There's several posters in this thread that made it sound like their DH was not allowing them to eat certain things.  Weird.

When are we officially supposed to not sleep on our backs?  There have been mornings I've woken up on my back having started on my side.

  • The only things on the naughty list I have completely eliminated are the medications and alcohol. Everything else in moderation and from a reputable source. I've had sushi and sashimi. It was delicious. Also thanks to this discussion I'm totally craving a tuna sub, so a trip to Jimmy Johns is in my future.

I'm pretty sure DH knows there are blacklisted foods, but he's never said a word to me about what I eat. I love that he trusts that I'm not an idiot and can take care of myself. He did get a little snarky when I ate an entire pineapple before he could have any, but it was his own fault for getting to it too slow ;)

  • I've had the raw, good stuff a few times this pregnancy. No regrets.

A friend's wife is a doctor in Japan and I asked her what they say about it to pregnant women in Japan. Her response? Not a damn thing, lol. I figure if the Japanese aren't worried about it, then I should be good, hehe.

  • I also don't understand cutting out soft cheeses - as long as they're made with pasteurized milk (everything in the US is) they're fine to eat. So I eat all the goat cheese, feta and bleu I can get me hands on. And I agree - thankfully my husband knows better than to comment about what I'm eating. He's the one telling me a turkey sub will be fine.

  • My birthday is next week too and I will be eating sushi. I have had it just once since being pregnant and only ate cooked rolls. That's what Ill do again since that's what I prefer anyway. I have been doing lunch meat as well, but I heat it first per recommendations to kill the listeria. I agree with being more lax this time around, I definitely find myself not stressing as much! Happy Birthday @cd92007!!

I have. Since they eat it during pregnancy in Japan, I figure it's fine.

Are we not supposed to eat tuna?

Tuna has a high Mercury count so its recommended that you limit it. I have it about once a week and my OB has no issue with it.

Mine doesn't try to control me and he doesn't care about lunch meat, but he would be pissed if I ate undercooked meat or eggs or raw fish. He just doesn't see why I would take the risk and, given our history, I can see his point. I don't know about the other women who posted, but my husband doesn't "allow" me to eat this or that.... I just try and do what I can to ease his PGAL anxiety same as he does for me. That's why I avoid bending the rules. Or at least I don't flaunt it in front of him. He doesn't force me to eat a certain way, but I do it for him.

I've been craving sushi for the past few weeks. I'm not sure I can hold out until Oct or that I can just stick to cooked rolls. Almost got some today even. Glad to hear I'm not the only one who thinks lunch meat is fine. What else would I eat for lunch? And you're absolutely right, there seems to be more stories of listeria, salmonella and e.coli outbreaks from produce and frozen foods than lunch meat. I can only give up so much and I have to be realistic about the diet restrictions. Oh and yes I cut out coffee during the first tri, but I'm back at it. Only one one cup in the morning which I rarely even finish, so like half, if that. One of the guys as work tried to tell me I couldn't have caffeine and I swear I wanted to rip his head off. First off, come talk to me when you can have a baby. Second, never F--- with a pregnant woman's food!  ;)B)

I go for the veggie rolls which are awesome! No regrets either
Why would you ever regret a veggie roll anyway?
  • @krzyriver that's completely different. That is mutual respect based on a shared history, not controlling, one-sided, dictator type behavior from one partner to the other.

  • I don't like sushi anyway, but I do eat my teak medium rare, lunch meat, bagged salad, and frozen veggies. I've had very little caffeine but that's because I'm cutting out pop in general and I don't drink coffee or tea. Hot damn I'm a rebel.
  • @LizaKate1213 I know, I was just clarifying my original post. I tend to say things like "he doesn't let me eat this." And he likes to say "she doesn't let me eat this" about things that I've cut out of his diet due to high cholesterol. When it comes to health and diet, we tend to put our feet down. But it's definitely not a dictatorship. It's concern and respect for that concern. So I commented because that might have been what the other posters meant as well. Or maybe not, who knows. I don't know their situations. Lol

  • I haven't had sushi, but I've pretty much ignored the no list--including a flute of champaign. Just use moderation. The 2oz of raw fish in 8 sushi rolls isn't going to be an issue.
  • So far I've only had cooked sushi.  I live in Kansas City, so I don't have a lot of trust in the quality of the fish, even at the high end sushi restaurants.  I've already told DH that my first meal post pregnancy is going to be my favorite sushi roll (rainbow roll... raw fish galore!) and a glass of white wine.  I'm a FTM, so I'm a bit overly cautious about what to eat or not eat.  I eat deli meat but I microwave it.  No steak or burgers because it seems a waste to not eat them medium rare. I know that most of these things aren't likely to cause any problems, but so far it hasn't been an issue to cut them out.  I get what others are saying, DH is very cautious about what I eat too.  I think it's his way of protecting baby and showing that he's done his research lol.  But he always leaves the decision up to me, and he wouldn't shame me for anything I choose to eat.  I hope that's what others are getting at too?

I was a vegetarian for years in college, and veggie sushi really gave me that sushi fix.  Since being pregnant, I've had cooked sushi, and my favorite thing has been a shrimp tempura roll.  I don't usually go for the fried stuff in sushi, but it was delicious!  Now I want another one...

We ended up not going to the sushi place for my birthday dinner, but I am definitely going to have it someday soon!! I agree with one of the previous posters - frozen veggies and lettuce freak me out WAY more than fresh lunch meat, sushi, etc.

  • I have heard about the frozen food issue but kinda don't get it so just wondering if anyone knows - if you end up cooking it then how does it still result in listeria outbreaks?
