Has anyone joined any classes or groups?

I know it's too early for the typical classes but has anyone joined any yoga, prenatal care, meditation, gym (zumba) etc?

Lets inspire one another :) Let's hear it!!

Re: Has anyone joined any classes or groups?

  • Not yet, it's too early to bother changing my normal yoga classes yet. After first tri I might have to modify poses and then I'll probably take prenatal yoga but I have a couple of months left of normal practice first!

  • @TinaBelcher that's great! If your instructor shared with you the poses that you should not do in these early stages if any pls let us know :)

There aren't any that you should avoid if you've done yoga before/ your body is used to it (ETA- this early) If not I'd probably go easy on inversions, arm balances and back bends (mostly just the ones on your belly), but depending on your teacher you might hear a lot of different suggestions or restrictions... I always suggest going to a class and telling your instructor that your pregnant, they'll watch you and help you learn how to do the poses correctly so you don't hurt yourself (much safer than just buying a dvd to use at home!)

@knottie1443924966 @TinaBelcher  - my style of yoga has some modifications starting in first trimester (and my teacher actually had me start doing things like Mountain with legs apart instead of together as soon as she found out I was TTC). They're relatively minor, but they do have some additional restrictions if you have a history of MC. I know my style of yoga is pretty strict (Iyengar style, for anyone who's curious), so it doesn't surprise me that they're more anal about it than most other schools.

But I second the recommendation to just tell your teacher. And listen to your body! Yoga class kicked. my. ass. this week, way more than usual, and I'm usually a fairly regular practitioner. Honour your body and you'll be fine.

  • @poetryandoceans one of my vinyasa teachers wanted mods while ttc too, but my ashtanga teacher's like "lol nope! Get in that inversion!" Haha yeah, it definitely depends on the style and teacher
  • @TinaBelcher Inversion is definitely not one of the things Iyengar folks tell you to avoid; in fact, even on my super restrictive PGAL regimen, they've got me doing multiple inversions every day! They say blood to the head helps your pituitary which helps all your hormone function. It's actually certain standing poses because it "engages the pelvic floor" too much.

The main restrictions are against anything that might go against the goal of "creating space" in the abdomen. I mean... I feel like I could still be doing tree pose, but if they want me to do my warrior 2 on a chair, then that's fine. I'm so exhausted I'll take it.
