I have never heard this used as a first name in real life. We have family friends that it is their last name so that is all I can picture. It is neutral for me as to whether it is a boy or girl name.
Oh...you mean how 'Scrubs' decided Elliot was an ok name for a girl? Not ok.
I love when people use this.
In the show, her name was entirely because her father wanted a son. He named her Elliott because he wanted a son. But people don't pay attention cause they think it's cute. What a sad ass legacy for a daughter.
When I hear of Ellis as a given name, I immediately think of Ellis Island, which might be something to consider. As far as whether the name is masculine or feminine, I voted masculine.
ellis is my mom's maiden name and I'm always tempted to us it. Had in mind for a son but... I'm on my 4th girl and it may make it as a MN since I'm not a fan of Ellie as a NN and I could see many people using that. It is more masculine to me but, if honored for family, I can find it forgivable. If used just because, I find it more like Hayden, Peyton and other masculine sir names that have ended up on kids.

My instinct thought when I hear Ellis is a boy but with that said the only Ellis I know is a girl and she's precious. For me, it's one of those names that is truly neutral.

When I see it written, I see it as a boy. When I hear it, it is close enough to Alice that I can see it on a girl, though. I know an Ellison that is a girl (in her thirties).
Honestly? My first thought was "both". I know one female Ellis and one male Ellis, both in their 20s. Throw in the female Ellis Grey from Grey's Anatomy, which is technically the first time I heard the name used on a person, and it tips girl.
I've never heard of anyone named Ellis except on Grey's Anatomy, and those characters are both girls. That being said, I think it could be used on both genders, but as a pp mentioned, I would probably pick Alice for a girl over Ellis.
I think boy so voted boy but my husband said girl, go figure. He hates unisex names but didn't see this as one. Just curious so I asked him. Which did you prefer?
