  • Ignore the haters! Was on my dream list for a girl until my husband squashed my dreams. ;-)

Grey's anatomy determines it is a girl.
  • I've only known a male Ellis, but I wouldn't side eye it on a girl.
  • Definitely masculine

  • I have never heard this used as a first name in real life. We have family friends that it is their last name so that is all I can picture. It is neutral for me as to whether it is a boy or girl name.
  • Statistics back up the poll.  I am curious if you or your husband won the poll?

  • When I hear of Ellis as a given name, I immediately think of Ellis Island, which might be something to consider. As far as whether the name is masculine or feminine, I voted masculine.
  • ellis is my mom's maiden name and I'm always tempted to us it. Had in mind for a son but... I'm on my 4th girl and it may make it as a MN since I'm not a fan of Ellie as a NN and I could see many people using that.
It is more masculine to me but, if honored for family, I can find it forgivable. If used just because, I find it more like Hayden, Peyton and other masculine sir names that have ended up on kids.

  • @bringmemylongswordho My quote doesn't work. That's hilarious, I didn't watch the show enough to know that!
  • Totally a surname in my world so if I had to pick I'd say it's masculine. I'd also say it doesn't belong on anyone as a first name.
  • My instinct thought when I hear Ellis is a boy but with that said the only Ellis I know is a girl and she's precious.  For me, it's one of those names that is truly neutral.

I know someone who recently named their baby Ellis and it is a boy, which is why I think of it as a boy's name :)  It's a really cute name!

    This.
  • TBH, when I hear this name I think of the arrogant yuppie in Die Hard, although I think it was his last name. It seems more masculine to me.

It actually reminds me of Red from Shawshank Redemption.  His name was Ellis Redding.

  • When I see it written, I see it as a boy. When I hear it, it is close enough to Alice that I can see it on a girl, though. I know an Ellison that is a girl (in her thirties).
  • This name screams "last name" to me.

  • I think if you're using it to honor family then it could go either way.

  • It's a surname as far as I know.... So masculine.
  • We had a similar problem with the name Ariel. IMO Ellis is a male name. Ellen, Alice, or Elise would be comparable girl names in my book.

  • I think of it as a unisex name, but if I were to use it, it would be for a girl.
  • Honestly? My first thought was "both". I know one female Ellis and one male Ellis, both in their 20s. Throw in the female Ellis Grey from Grey's Anatomy, which is technically the first time I heard the name used on a person, and it tips girl.

  • Can I vote 1000x for masculine?
  • I've never heard of anyone named Ellis except on Grey's Anatomy, and those characters are both girls. That being said, I think it could be used on both genders, but as a pp mentioned, I would probably pick Alice for a girl over Ellis.
  • I think boy so voted boy but my husband said girl, go figure. He hates unisex names but didn't see this as one. Just curious so I asked him. Which did you prefer?

My sisters middle name is Ellis named after our dad who got it from our grandfather so I think it could go for either
  • There is nothing feminine about this name whatsoever. That being said, it's a surname so even on a boy it isn't great unless you are honoring family.

  • This was my great grandfather's name, but I also know a teen girl named Ellis also. Reads masculine to me.
  • Ellis is the Westernized version of Elijah. All boy.
