Elevated TSH?

So the beta numbers came back and the dr said everything looks great! He was concerned a bit about the TSH level. He said it was slightly elevated but didn't tell me any numbers on it. I have hypothyroid so he bumped up my dose from 100 to 112. I have a dr appt on 5/11 then I will get it rechecked. I have a history of m/xs so naturally, this has me concerned. Should I be or am I letting my nerves get ahead of me?

I don't have any experience with TSH/thyroid numbers (do they check this with all quants?) but... I think if your doctor is okay with waiting until the 11th, you should try to be okay with it, too. I know that is incredibly difficult to do, but sometimes the only things we can do are trust our doctors. I'm sure that if your levels were dangerously off, they would have let you know that. If you can't find any peace of mind, maybe you could call your nurse's line and ask them to explain it further to you?

I started on levothyroxine for my last FET (my TSH went from 2.4 pre DD (who is now 2) to 3.5) I'm on 50mcg. I did a lot of reading on it and found out that you should test your TSH in early pregnancy because a lot can change in that time! Kudos to your doctor for checking it!!

So that being said- I think its perfectly normal for your body's needs to change even in early pregnancy and to adjust your dose if needed.

My hands/arms recently got SUPER SUPER dry, so I'm wondering if I need a dose adjustment too....

That's good that they checked it so early and were able to adjust dosage right away.  My last TSH draw was in January (2.54) and when I had a telephone appointment last week I asked if I needed to do another TSH draw soon.  They told me I'd do that with other lab work when I go in for the 8 week ultrasound appt.  Your change in dosage is so slight that your doctor probably isn't too worried, but is attempting to keep you within normal limits.

Pregnancy can elevate your TSH levels, as long as the Dr is ahead of it and bumping your meds you're fine. Also, May 11th is less than 10 days away and a new dose of medication can take up to 6 weeks to totally register so don't panic if your levels don't go down as far as they should by that appt.

  • My TSH is elevated too. My doctor increased my synthroid and wants to test my levels again in 6 weeks. Which i think is insane. What is your tsh level?

I will ask to get mine tested frequently. Before I started low-dose Synthroid, my TSH was 5.8 (highest it's ever been) after being on Synthroid for a few months, it went down to 2, then recently was 1.45.

I know that doctors like it to be between 1-2 when you are pregnant or TTC, but I don't know how quickly that number can change, or how often you need to adjust meds when you become pregnant??

I am only on half a pill per day (25 mcg I think)
  • He never told me the number. I have to get mine rechecked in a month.

  • @new_ivf my levels SHOT up when I got pregnant. I was taking 37.5 mcg of synthroid and my levels were around 3.5, and once I got pregnant they increased to 5.5, so now I'm on 50.
  • Lurking from another BMB: my tsh was tested every 6 weeks during pregnancy and my dose was adjusted twice. Pregnancy hormones be cray cray.
  • It's good that your doc increased your dose. As long as they keep checking throughout pregnancy, it will be easily controlled. I have had hypothyroid since high school. When I was pregnant with my first, they didn't check my levels until I was almost 12 weeks and at that point my number was 14! (normal range is 2-5). This time I'm seeing an endocrinologist and she increased my dose as soon as I tested positive. I'll have my blood checked every 6 - 8 weeks until I'm at least 20 weeks and my levels even out. Last time I was on 112mcg before pregnancy and ended up being increased multiple times to finally end up at 175mcg. Hormones are crazy!
