C-sections

Recliner for after c-section?

My husband and I are trying to figure out seating for our nursery. I'm expecting twins and my doctor thinks it's likely I will have a c-section. I've read great advice from some ladies on the bump about how recliners are easier to sleep in after surgery than beds. If you've had a c-section, do you agree with this?

We're torn between a la-z-boy gliding recliner or an upholstered glider from Buy Buy Baby. I like the look of the regular glider better, but wonder if the recliner would be more practical for our circumstances. Thanks for any advice you might have!

  • I'd just go with whatever chair you like best.  I didn't see the need for a recliner at all, and was able (and happy!) to sleep in my bed the first night home from the hospital.

  • I didn't need or want a recliner to sleep in, but one thing to consider is getting out of the glider or recliner. I had to put a pillow behind me in the glider when I was nursing because it was too deep and I couldn't get out with a baby in my arms (because I needed to push myself out because I had no abdominal strength).

  • Thanks! I should have added-- our bedroom is on the second floor and the nursery will be on the first floor. Does that make a difference? Thanks for your time!
  • It's hard to say because everyone is different.

I was able to sleep flat in my bed after both of my c/s, while my SIL couldn't lay flat.  She slept in her rocker/recliner for nearly 2 weeks.

I'm not sure purchasing something just for pp sleeping is necessary, IMO.  I'd think if you are unable to lay flat, you could get comfortable by propping yourself on the couch.

For a while, you're going to have to limit trips up and down the stairs.  Heck, I was told NO STAIRS for the first 2-3 days home.

But again, the couch would suffice, unless you really want a rocker/recliner/glider.

  • Thanks for all your advice, ladies. I just went back to buy buy baby and the chair I preferred actually DOES recline. And they let me use a 20% coupon! I will be sure to have lots of pillows on hand too. Thanks again!

This.  I had about five pillows propping me up for about 10 days post op.  Then lying flat was the only way I could manage to stretch my body...which by that point really needed a good stretch

  • We had a huge chair in our living room I ended up sleeping on. I propped my feet up and slept mostly upright. For me, sleeping lying down in any way was almost unbearable when I had to move or get up that first week.
  • I too had twins- I bought a recliner not to sleep in after they were born, but to use while pregnant- to keep my feet up and I had a hard time getting comfy and getting up from our sectional.  It helped a lot when I was placed on bedrest for my BP- I could go and rest in the recliner in the family room and have a normal evening with my DH.

When I came home from the hospital, I had no problem with getting in or out of bed ( I was still under bedrest since my BP had not gone down and the meds had not taken effect yet.  My boys were in the NICU for 17 days).

We were in the hospital for 10 days but I slept reclined in my bed there for about 3. I could have slept flat, but the getting up and down for checks or nursing was difficult. Not super painful, just hard to do.
  • After my c/s I slept on our reclining love seat for about a week, when I was feeling a bit better I moved to our iComfort since I could sit it up as well. I know this sounds odd but I would really go for a leather recliner, keep a sheet on it when you sleep of course but our couch has gotten so much spit up etc. on it that if we weren't able to just wipe it down it would smell like rotten milk forever.

  • Oh my gosh I lived in my recliner for about two weeks after my csection!! You will absolutely love the reclining factor!!
