Weekly Randoms 5/3

Re: Weekly Randoms 5/3

  • I found a link on Pinterest to a bunch of TED Talks that you should listen to while pregnant or as a new mom. I listened to one with my husband about how babies learn things in the womb-they recognize and prefer the sound of their mother's voice, they learn to taste and like whatever foods mom eats, etc.

When it was over I asked my husband what he thought... and then proceeded to get lectured on how I now need to make sure to eat better, and to not ever at all at any point get stressed or angry, and to always talk in a nice soothing voice, and to never yell or use an upset tone.

He's been like this basically since he got over the shock of me being pregnant. "Why don't you eat broccoli?! It's good for you! I know you don't like it, but you should eat it anyway!" "Don't get upset that you had a crappy day at work. Just let it go. Baby doesn't need your stress!" "Your tone sounds very agitated and Baby can hear it. Talk sweeter!"

Uuuuuuuugh. I know he's honestly just trying to help, I really do. But there's a constant battle of him telling me to always stay calm and happy and me letting him know that I'm human(and hormonal) so it's perfectly fine for me to get upset or angry at things that are legitimately annoying. And if he tells me not to drink Coke one more time I might punch him! It's not like it's all I drink; and when I'm good and skip caffeine and get a huge headache and tell him my head hurts he just goes "there's nothing I can do about it; take some pills and go to bed." Crotch punch. The man is gonna get a crotch punch soon.

Trying not to be too AW-ish but if you want to see something really cool the baby home where I work had a team come in early 2015 to put together a mini-doc. It's about 15 minutes long and full of adorableness and such.

ETA: It was filmed in early 2015, but they JUST finished putting it together so it's basically brand new.
    WOW.

"In 2015, a UNICEF study reported more than 100,000 children did not live past the age of 5 in Tanzania. 70% were infants."

That is unfathomable. Bless you and the work you and your colleagues are doing there.

  • @MRSCORKER - Try motherhood maternity.  I went to an MM outlet store where they had them for either 12.99 or 16.99 each.  They had a few different colors.  I've been very unlucky finding shelf bra tanks this year.  Old Navy used to have them, but I haven't found them there this season.

It is really hard to wrap your mind around, especially when it is so often only because of diarrhea, which leads to dehydration.... Still there are many people who believe that if the child is having diarrhea you should not give them any liquids because it seems to increase the amount of diarrhea....

  • Hey everyone! Sorry I've been so MIA, just trying to get back into the board. Was away and now playing catch up at work.

Weighing in on the sleep sacks, agree the zipper ones are the BEST. As a STM, I've learned that we HATE any pjs that button up. Way too difficult in middle of the night diaper changes. Zippers for the win!

No buttons...ever. Zippers, Velcro, I don't care as long as it isn't a snap. Even with a kid who isn't getting night changes anymore, I still cringe at snaps and buttons.

    Oh my goodness. :(

The first thing I did after watching the video, was to go to the website and see about the adoption process (as my husband and I plan to adopt a child). But, I saw that Tanzania law prohibits adoption unless you've lived in the country for a number of years.

I can't say enough how impressed I was with that video, and with the mission at Neema Village. <3

@F47  Yeah. There have been some people "skirting" the rules but I do not recommend it at all, and we are not allowing any of our children to be funneled into the scams. There is a fairly large, and ever growing, number of Tanzanian families looking to adopt so that's been a wonderful thing.

Really the hugest problem is maternal mortality. I think the stats have improved some but as of 2012 it was 1 in 39 women would die in child birth! Which is horrifying and terrifying and just all around sad.

Thank you for your kind words.

    @annabenanna It was this link:

    https://www.hellosunshineok.com/blog/2015/7/21/ted-talks-for-pregnancy-and-birth

We watched the 5th video "What we learn before we're born"

I haven't watched any of the other ones yet, though

EDIT: Sorry, accidentally lied! We also watched the one called "Conception to birth-visualized" which was pretty interesting!

  • Thank you @bamacoop , I love me some good TED Talks.  Excited to listen to it on a long drive!
  • A thought.... should we start a "Anatomy Scan" thread? A lot of us are gonna be getting it done soon, if not already.  Also missing the weekly appointments thread.  Whaddya ladies think?
  • kmtz89kmtz89 member
@annabenanna i agree! The "boy or girl" thread is a mess.

Yes it is.  I don't even wanna open it.

Also the "how are you going to announce on facebook" thread is a mess.  My phone always hangs and the app crashes when I attempt to open that one mobile.
  • @kmolletz That was an incredible video. I had tears in my eyes the whole time. What a lovely place to work and be of service to Tanzanian children!
  • Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone! Hope you're treating yourselves like I'm about to hehe (taco bell Cinnabon delights mmmm)
  • @kmolletz hey one of my friends posted this on her facebook feed! Of course I thought it was something about rehabilitating gay people based on her political/religious stance and hid it. Now I have to go back and find it and tell her I know someone who works there =) Big props for what you're doing.

  • @nlane0723 I had some last night. "churro bites"
  • I keep asking clothing questions on the weekly random threads, so if that's annoying (or if there's a better place for these questions), please someone let me know.  Does anyone have leggings they really love?  What brand are they and where did you find them?  Are they maternity or non-maternity?  I'm looking for cropped leggings to wear under dresses to my toddler's music class (where we sit on the ground a lot).  Pants are going to be too hot in the summer and I only have one pair of maternity shorts.  Any recommendations would be appreciated!

@ignoscemihi I have cropped legging from Pea in a Pod leftover from last pregnancy, and I love them. They're on the more expensive side (can't remember exactly what I paid for them) but they're not sheer like the Motherhood brand and they're sooooo comfortable. Worth looking at!
  • @annabenanna congrats on the license and upcoming beach wedding! How soon?? Keep is posted...and hopefully post a pic?! So exciting!
  • @kmolleltz it's sounding like you should open your area's very first coffee/bagel shop - you'd make a fortune!! ;);)
  • My random thought - I ate a whole jar of pickles... And still wasn't satisfied. I feel like it's so pregnancy cliche, but I can't help it, I just want pickles!! (They even snuck into my weird dream about going sledding with a girl from high school and Jimmy Fallon....pregnancy dreams are so weird.)
  • Thanks @kmalls.  I saw some for $35 (reasonable) and some for $81 (more than I want to pay for leggings).  I'll give the less expensive ones a try.
  • Happy Hour at Starbucks from 3-5PM till the 15th. HALF OFF S'MORES FRAPS!!

  • @ignoscemihi I have these (https://www.jcpenney.com/mixit-knit-leggings-plus/prod.jump?ppId=pp5003791022&catId=WebID) Mixit Leggings from JCPenney. I LOVE them. I bought them pre-BFP and they still fit fabulously. I'm also pretty sure they come in capri style, or at least they used to.

  • This is for the STM out there... did you find a glider/rocker necessary during the first few months?  Was it really useful?
  • agogo1agogo1 member
@annabenanna I did not but I might be in the minority. I find it a little more useful now with a sometimes fussy toddler but even then, a glider/rocker is definitely not on my must-have list. I will say that ours is quite comfortable and looks really cute in our nursery so I'm happy to have it, but it's not used all that much.

Why can't I watch this video?! I know we've had the conversation before that I wanted to adopt from Africa but couldn't so I would love to watch this! Does it have music? Because Germany likes to ban stuff with music due to "potential copyright infringement"...

  • Thanks @agogo1 .  If we don't buy it 2nd hand, a brand new one is around $300+ and I dunno if it's gonna be worth it you know?
  • @annabenanna We didn't use our glider/rocker until our son was over six months old.  He didn't sleep in his crib until then.  A recliner in the living room would have been much more useful.
